The Rock at Stramski’s Beach

I made a list a few weeks ago to review areas in town that I had not yet shot or had wanted to shoot under different conditions.  On that list was sunset at Stramski's beach.  I had a chance to visit this area on Friday and was disappointed at first by the cloudless sky.  I tried shooting toward the setting sun but couldn't find an angle I liked.  Then I turned around near the end of the beach and saw this huge, singular rock casting its shadow.  The sun lent a warm glow to the entire scene and the incoming [...]

Keep it Local – Hand in Hand Massage

Fridays feature local businesses and today's entry is Hand in Hand massage.  Blane and Monique have been in practice as massage therapists for over 20 years.  Three years ago, they moved to this historic location on beautiful State Street.  I was fortunate to have a postcard-perfect sunrise when I took this image.  Both therapists are incredibly good at what they do which I was reminded of just this past weekend when I received a chair massage at the Rotary Great Race.  Do yourself a favor and make an appointment with them soon. The house's fascinating history is written on the [...]

Sunset over Gerry Island

The theme this week has been sunrises and sunsets and I therefore chose this photo which fit in nicely.  It's another from the archive and was taken on July 4th while awaiting the fireworks display.  A storm came through right before the fireworks were due to start and missed us but provided for a very intense sunset.  The best view ended up being this one looking out from Fort Sewall at Gerry Island.  This was taken as a 4 shot panorama.  If you look carefully (click the photo to see it bigger), you can see the American flag hanging from [...]

The Sun Rises on Cliff Street and the Harbor

A few days after shooting the houses on Cliff Street at sunset, I woke in time for a sunrise.  That ended up being an incredible site to behold and was featured several months ago (link).  When the sun finished its initial ascent, I drove out to see if I could capture the vibrant orange sky against the now familiar composition of the houses on Cliff Street with Abbot hall behind them.  This is an almost perfect mimic of the view from sunset and shows the incredible difference morning and evening light can make.

The Harvest Moon rises over Crowninshield Island

Tonight's Harvest Moon took a while to get through the low-lying haze but, when it did, put on quite a show.  I set up at Grace Oliver beach to capture the moon as it rose along the edge of Crowninshield Island.  I kept chasing the moon as it rose from spots along Beacon street but this was the best of the bunch.

Kayakers out for an Evening Row

Yesterday's post featured a close up of the houses on Cliff Street at sunset.  As I composed that shot, two kayakers started out from Riverhead beach and made their way to the waters in the foreground.  They then took a few minutes rest and I promptly recomposed my shot to include them in the frame.  I liked the sense of scale they offer to the image as well as the slight change in perspective.  I really need to rent a kayak and try this myself next Summer.

The Sun Sets on Cliff Street

In early Summer, I began exploring the area around the causeway.  I spent the day walking along the causeway and back on the rocks below trying to find interesting compositions.  I noticed that Abbot hall kept peaking through at various points and noted some of my favorites.  One night in early June, the sunset seemed to hold promise and I drove out to the causeway.  I grabbed this close-up view featuring three beautiful houses on Cliff Street with Abbot Hall visible over their roofs. I have another favorite from this night that I'll post tomorrow...

The Great Rubber Duck Race

We just spent a great four hours at Devereux Beach taking part in the Rotary Great Race.  At the conclusion, a rubber duck race took place in an awesome pond built under the awning at Devereux.  The ducks had a strong push from the wind and the gas powered wind blower.  Here's a shot as the pink and blue ducks floated by the beautiful end-of-Summer day.

Keep it Local – Coffey Ice Cream

It's seven o'clock at night on an early September day.  We just got through three straight days of rain and the sun shone for a wonderful few hours.  Had a great home cooked meal and decided we needed one last ice cream run.  While my wife bathed the kids, I drove out to Coffey Ice Cream and was thrilled to see they were still open.  Got a scoop of Death by Chocolate and Cookie Dough for her; Apple pie and Mocha Chip for me and stopped to chat for a bit with the owner.  Turns out that Coffey Ice Cream [...]

Crowninshield Road from Crowninshield Island

At the end of Crowninshield Road lies a beautiful house seemingly perched on the edge of the ocean.  As I continued to explore Crowninshield Island, I looked back and noticed this view of the house and the rocks of the island in the foreground.  I liked the balance it gave to the image and the perspective of Marblehead's coast.
