Looking Back at our Town

After walking up the hill and reaching the top of the rocky section on Crowninshield Island, my daughter and I descended and reached an area with a small tide pool.  Looking up, I saw this incredible view of town looking back through Little Harbor at some colorful houses and Abbot Hall in the distance.  As it was low tide, the path to Gerry Island had appeared and, if you look closely, you'll see two people walking along.  They add a nice sense of perspective to the scene.

The Tree and the Rock on Brown’s Island

I picked up my daughter from camp in late August and, as it was low tide, decided to take her to Crowninshield island.  We found ourselves walking across the flats that appeared as the water receded and then made our way past the dune grass up a small hill.  As we walked, I saw this scene of  a lone tree and rock on perfectly green grass under a great blue sky.  My first thought was of the classic Windows XP desktop background and I composed this shot to mimic the framing in that iconic photo (though it lacked this great [...]

Ready for a Round of Golf at the Tedesco Country Club

On Fridays, I try to focus on a local business and the Tedesco Country Club may be the newest oldest one that I have photographed to date.  Incorporated over one hundred years ago, the main house recently completed construction.  I drove out here this past Wednesday wondering if the interplay of clouds would make for an interesting sunset.  I was rewarded with the presence of two golf bags standing in front of the putting green and knew that I had the composition I was after.  The subtle sunset light helped as well.  Enjoy the image and have a great Labor [...]

The Corinthian and the Harbor

At the corner of Kimball and Nahant Streets lies a small parking spot and an overlook.  The tide was going out and I was struck by the great lines of the Corinthian Yacht Club juxtaposed against the harbor, a great cloud and Abbot Hall in the background.  Then I noticed the seagull perched on the roof and knew I had to capture this image.

What Lies Beneath

After exploring the Cove and photographing the boats tied to the shore, I waded a bit deeper and discovered a bed of seaweed at my feet.  I carefully composed this shot to show the seaweed and rocks underneath the water and the pier overlooking the harbor with Abbot Hall seen in the distance.  I used a circular polarizer to cut through the reflections in the water and show 'what lies beneath'.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

What’s in the bag

I received a comment today asking what I typically shoot with and thought it best to address it with an inventory of what's 'in the bag'. My primary camera is the Canon 50D. I purchased it almost 3 years ago and have taken nearly 70,000 photos with it. Most are of my kids but many now show up here as well. I have three lenses that I use: For ultra wide-angle shots, the Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens is hard to beat. It offers a great, wide field of view that can capture all of Castle Rock from the top of [...]

The Cove

August 20th began as a gray day and I just about had to force myself to get out and explore town while my wife and kids attended a birthday party.  As I drove around and found myself heading to the Neck, I noted that the sky was clearing up nicely.  I decided to stop at Cove Lane which is a public right of way to the harbor and was thrilled to see the tide was in a bit and the water perfectly clear and calm.  It also turned out to be surprisingly warm so I wandered in with the tripod [...]

So Long Irene

It looks like Hurricane Irene is making her way past with a bit of wind left over but, thankfully, very little damage reported so far.  I ventured out after the rains let up around noon looking for more signs of Irene's power along the coast.  I started at Spray Avenue where I could shoot the waves with some protection from the wind and spray.  I then headed over to Greystone Beach which I have been wanting to shoot for some time.  I have a couple of shots that I liked from there but this slower one of a developing wave [...]
