The Sunflowers of West Shore Drive

There are two flowers that I have sought to capture in town since I began this site.  The first was the Cherry Blossom which I found on Washington Street.  The second was the sunflower.  I had racked my brain as to where I might find these symbols of Summer within the Town of Marblehead but was coming up empty.  On Wednesday, I picked up my daughter from camp and drove up West Shore Drive toward Crowninshield/Brown's Island as it was low tide.  As we passed Cemetery Road, I noticed an incredible patch of sunflowers on the left.  The light wasn't [...]

Sunset from Fountain Park

The Sturgeon Moon rises in August and I hoped to catch it on this night from a vantage point at Fountain Park.  As I waited, I tried to find a composition that would include the lighthouse and Little Harbor.  I was pleased to find this angle and even more so when a pair of kayakers paddled into the foreground.  The moon ended up rising a bit early so that it's color lacked the vibrant yellow that came with the moonrise the next night.  I was happy with the way this sunset view turned out.

The Fisherman at Castle Rock

After capturing the rainbow from Chandler Hovey, the sky turned grey and I decided to head home.  On a whim, I took a detour by Castle Rock thinking the recent storm might lend itself to some crashing waves.  I was pleased to see that it did and surprised to find someone trying to fish in the crashing surf.  I shot this image using a 1/2 second exposure to subdue the motion of the waves and was pleased to see that the fisherman hadn't moved in that time.

Lunch at the Yacht Club

As I biked around the neck in July, I happened to turn down the street where this yacht club resides and noticed its outdoor seating area for the first time.  I asked permission to photograph it and was thrilled to be given the opportunity to shoot this breath-taking scene.  This was taken at 9:30am so it wasn't quite time for lunch but the sun was at my back and perfectly illuminated Marblehead harbor filled with boats on their moorings.  I can only imagine how peaceful it would be to sit here and have some lunch...and a beer or two.  For [...]

Over the Rainbow

The same storm that brought about the reflection shots of the lighthouse also produced a rainbow over Children's Island.  I had raced out of the house after the storm blew by in hopes of catching a rainbow and got to the parking lot at Chandler Hovey park just as the sun peeked through the clouds.  The location of the rainbow was perfect - it was an unusually flat one likely due to the angle of the sun - and neatly covered Children's Island.  The rainbow lasted only a few minutes and I felt lucky to have captured it.

Keep it Local – Atomic Cafe

Another Friday means another local business is featured on the site.  Today we see Atomic Cafe that can be found in a great brick and glass setting on School street next door to the Little Theater.  I stopped here one day while walking around Five Corners and noticed that the normally crowded streets were nearly empty of cars.  Seemed like a great opportunity to shoot Atomic Cafe and, as luck would have it, the windows had just been cleaned (notice the pool of water on the street).  Make sure you stop in and try the coffee they roast themselves...you may [...]

The Sturgeon Moon rises over Devereux Beach

The Full Moon was due to rise on Saturday, August 13th but clouds threatened to block its ascent.  I plotted out where the Sturgeon moon was due to rise and struggled with a landmark that would capture the town of Marblehead as well as the beauty of moonrise.  It was when I noticed its position in relation to Devereux beach that I had my answer.  After making a study of the lifeguard chairs, I knew they would feature in this image.  I backed up so that I could fit the chair and the moon's path with my 200mm lens that [...]

The Rocks at Chandler Hovey Park

Another photo while waiting for a recent time lapse to finish.  While exploring the coast and the crevices that mark it, I noticed the golden light that was falling on these rocks.  By chance, a sailboat was positioned at just the right spot to lead the eye from the waters below up to the top of the image.  The sails caught the setting light and I knew I had a perfect Summer photo of Marblehead.

The Brick Oil House at Chandler Hovey Park

Yesterday's Reflection shot was taken while my older camera was shooting a time lapse movie of the sun setting over the harbor.  While waiting for it to finish, I wandered around Chandler Hovey park looking for compositions and angles that I hadn't yet shot.  I noticed the sun setting over the brick oil house that used to power Marblehead Light and decided to close down the aperture and turn the bright sun into a sunstar.  Having the tree there helped add to the composition as did the full harbor.

Reflections on a Year

Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of this website.  What started as a desire to learn more about my new hometown by shooting photos every Wednesday, has turned into an incredible experience.  In this past year, I have published 94 posts of images of this town.  Over 200 people have 'liked' the Wednesdays in Marblehead Facebook page.  Fifty people signed up to receive regular email updates.  The home page has been viewed over 1200 times (at least since I installed the plugin to keep count).   Meanwhile, I have become a member of the Marblehead Arts Association.  I've [...]
