Keep it Local – The Muffin Shop

By |2014-04-20T14:49:10-04:00March 30th, 2012|Categories: Keep it Local|Tags: , , , |

Did you know the Muffin Shop is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year?  Located on Washington Street, the Muffin Shop serves...well...muffins.  But also has great breakfast and lunch options.  On a cold Winter day, the front windows fog up from the heat of baking and in the Summer, it's uncommon to see the bench out front empty.  Not only does the Muffin Shop have great food, they also serve to showcase local artists on their walls.  Stop in and enjoy the food and art. And after you've had your fill of muffin and coffee, walk it off by turning left [...]

From the Rooftops – The Landing

By |2016-11-06T12:06:18-05:00March 29th, 2012|Categories: Rooftop|Tags: , , , , |

Soon, very soon!  On this rainy, gray morning, we just need to remember that soon we'll be able to enjoy this town at its finest.  Boats in the harbor, blue skies overhead, the sun at our back... This image was taken back in early September from the Harbor Wharfs Condo where I started the From the Rooftops project.  I shared an image from here looking back up State Street but this panorama gives you a better sense of what it was like on this late Fall day to stand and look out at the Landing below and the harbor beyond. Clammer in the Water

By |2016-11-06T12:06:18-05:00March 28th, 2012|Categories: Beach|Tags: , , , , |

A late entry this morning and one that complements the image from Monday.  After racing to shoot the great colors of dawn and finding someone digging for clams, I kept walking and looking for strong compositions with this guy in the water.  When I got behind him and saw this view of a lone person in the vastness of the ocean, I knew I had found what I wanted.  The boat in the distance seems to balance the scene perfectly.

Long Exposure – Pylons in the Harbor

By |2016-11-06T12:06:18-05:00March 27th, 2012|Categories: Long Exposure|Tags: , , , , , , |

As last week's post showed, I am a sucker for a good pier and, even better, the pylons that come first.  When I first heard about a new pier being built at Stramski beach, I jotted down the location for a possible shoot.  As soon as the first pylons went in, I started my scouting trips and waited for the day when the pylons would be in (and before cross beams would ruin the image I was after). On January 29th, I got lucky - pylons in, high tide, calm water, setting sun and just a few clouds in the [...]

Clamming at Dawn

By |2016-11-06T12:06:18-05:00March 26th, 2012|Categories: Beach|Tags: , , , , , |

I had to get up early on Friday morning for an electronic medical record meeting at a local hospital.  As I got dressed and ready for the day, I looked at the window and saw an incredible display of pinks and purples lighting up the sky.  I decided to postpone breakfast and raced downstairs, grabbed the always ready camera bag and drove.  I wasn't sure where I was going but found myself on Atlantic Avenue headed toward Ocean Ave.  The light was starting to fade as I pulled up to Devereux beach and jumped out of the car. There was [...]

Keep it Local – FL Woods

By |2016-11-06T12:06:19-05:00March 23rd, 2012|Categories: Keep it Local|Tags: , , , , |

I've been to FL Woods on a number of occasions over the years and have always appreciated the store front but, until I took this image and got it ready to post, I didn't realize how much history lies behind that facade.  You can read the full history by following the link above but suffice it to say that Fred L Woods Jr started the company (out of his home) in 1938!  I'm guessing this is the oldest continuously operating business in Marblehead and definitely should be on your list of stores to hit this weekend as you...keep it local. [...]

Dawn in Marblehead

By |2013-06-16T11:07:39-04:00March 21st, 2012|Categories: Marblehead Neck|Tags: , , , |

I woke up this morning at 6am for no good reason and checked the weather to see if I might have interesting light or other conditions.  There was the possibility of fog so I headed down to Devereux but saw that any fog that might have been had since lifted.  I drove through town and ended up at the Landing where I noticed the great red light of dawn.  I had maybe 4 minutes to get set up and grab this shot before the red was washed away by the rising sun. It's been a while since I've been able [...]

Long Exposure – The Pier

By |2016-11-06T12:06:19-05:00March 20th, 2012|Categories: Long Exposure|Tags: , , , , , |

Long exposure Tuesday brings us the second image in this new series and one that is hanging at the Hooper mansion this month.  As I mentioned last week, I have sought new ways to capture the town of Marblehead and began with the Rooftop Thursday series.  This Winter, I began to explore long exposure photography with the goal of creating beautiful black and white fine art images of our town. Today's image comes from the pier at Mooring Road.  This was a 3 minute exposure - the camera was placed on a tripod, a timer set and I ran off [...]

Waves coming to shore at Devereux Beach

By |2013-06-16T11:07:49-04:00March 19th, 2012|Categories: Beach|Tags: , , , , |

It felt like the first day of Summer yesterday and a picture of Devereux beach at sunset seemed the perfect choice for today.  This was actually taken in early December when sunset's are earlier but tend to be made up for with longer light.  The waves were coming to shore with those picture perfect white frothy crests and I timed it so that I caught an incoming wave at its peak.  Enjoy and, if the weather holds up, head down to the beach today.
