Marblehead Harbor

Sunset from Fort Sewall Overlooking Marblehead Harbor

On the same evening that I captured an image over Gerry Island [LINK} and then the new composition of a tree at Fort Sewall [LINK], I was also treated to a remarkable sunset.  I hadn't thought that the light or clouds would develop into much of a show on this outing but, as I walked back along the path toward the great tree at Fort Sewall, I noticed these great undulating clouds forming over Marblehead harbor.  Knowing there was an unobstructed view to be had with a little creative fence jumping, I clambered down to a ledge and set up [...]

Lone Sailboat in Marblehead Harbor

As I mentioned yesterday, I have now shared 700 images of Marblehead since starring this project in August 2010.  I decided to go through my published and 'to be posted' images over the weekend to reflect on that and found this lone sailboat in Marblehead harbor.  This image was taken on July 28, 2012 and I remember going out that day because some mid-day fog had begun to roll in.  This was taken at noon and the fog at that point had been alternating between pea soup and atmospheric or moody.  As I happened upon the lone sailboat, the light [...]

Riding the Launch at Sunset in Marblehead Harbor

After photographing the cannon firing at sunset from the Corinthian Yacht Club, I headed back to where I had parked on Corinthian Lane and marveled at the remaining colors of sunset as they slowly faded over Marblehead harbor.  I setup the camera to capture this scene and the great solitary cloud formation at the edge of the frame when I noted the launch setting out from the Corinthian Yacht Club.  I quickly adjusted my settings and captured the added element of people in this landscape scene which ended up being my favorite capture of the set.  Hope you agree.

Four Minute Sunrise over Marblehead Harbor

I woke at 4am on Wednesday June 12th for no good reason.  Rather than toss and turn, I figured I would take this as a sign to head out and shoot the sunrise.  I quietly made my way out the door and drove (in the rain) to Hammond Park.  We had been having a stretch of rain with June on its way to becoming a top-10 wettest month but I still had some hope that there would be a break in the rain and clouds right at sunrise...the weather app said so at least. I arrived at Hammond Park and [...]

Firing the Cannon at Sunset – Boston Yacht Club

After capturing yesterday's image of the woman running across the causeway and Monday's image of Castle Rock seen from Sky High, I decided to see if I could capture the third of five yacht clubs firing the cannon at sunset.  As I mentioned in the two previous posts, the first image was a happy accident but quickly led to this project and a pursuit to learn more about when this great tradition originated in Marblehead. I crossed back over the causeway and headed to the Boston Yacht Club on what ended up being a day when they were closed.  I [...]

Firing the Cannon at Sunset from the Corinthian Yacht Club

Last week I shared an image of the cannon being fired at sunset from a yacht club.  That image came about by chance as I happened to end up at that spot during a fairly lackluster sunset and got the idea to focus on the cannon fire.  Click here to see that image and read a bit more about this tradition in Marblehead:  Cannon at Sunset After that incredible experience, I decided to try to photograph the other yacht clubs firing their cannons at sunset.  Next up was the Corinthian Yacht Club.  I first ventured out here on May [...]

The Sun Sets Over Marblehead Harbor

Last week, I shared a recent favorite image of the sunset as seen from Chandler Hovey Park [LINK].  When I first arrived at the park, I actually ran past the lighthouse and to the edge of the land drawn by the incredible colors you see here.  I took 4 photos at this spot before walking back toward my car in search of the more expansive view that I ended up favoring. For this image, I was drawn not just to the vibrant colors of the setting sun but also to the boats anchored in Marblehead Harbor.  The sun not only [...]

Firing the Cannon at Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

On Tuesday night, I headed out after putting the kids to bed in hopes of capturing another good sunset.  While the clouds and approaching storms should have combined to put on a strong show, the light never really materialized.  I had driven to Chandler Hovey again but didn't make it out of the car before turning back.  On the way back, I turned down Foster Street to see what the view was like.  As I got out of the car, I noticed someone sitting by the cannon and realized I had made it in time to witness the great Marblehead [...]

Marblehead Harbor Under a Dramatic Sky at Sunset

As I mentioned in Monday's post, I had been feeling the urge to go out and shoot a landscape image on Saturday when I looked out the window and saw these great clouds forming at 7pm.  With the taciturn approval of my wife, I grabbed my gear and ran out of the house. My first stop was one of my favorite public ways - Parker Avenue.  I have shot a number of sunset images from the top of the stair leading to Marblehead harbor below and am pleasantly surprised with each outing here being different than the last. On this [...]

First Sailboat in the Harbor

On April 25th, I headed out to Crocker Park to capture the pink moon rising over the harbor.  On the way, I had stopped to capture a beautiful cherry blossom on Mugford street (posting that one tomorrow) and I still arrived a bit early.  Though the sunset was fairly muted with the lack of interesting clouds, the novelty of a single sailboat in the harbor convinced me to grab this image. I do like the reflected light off the houses that line Chandler Hovey Park.  Just wish the lighthouse had been lit at the time...
