Abbot Hall Tower Illuminated in the Fog

Judge's Award - Marblehead Arts Association Summer Member Exhibit June 2013 On Monday, May 6th, I arrived home and noted that fog was starting to roll in.  I decided to grab the kids and my camera and head out in hopes of capturing the unique beauty of foggy scenes.  We started off on Parker Lane - me with my camera, they with an old dSLR.  The fog would thicken to the point of hiding the distant mainland and the sun at times and then quickly dissipate revealing the shores again. From there we drove up to Chandler Hovey Park and [...]

Marblehead Harbor Starting to Fill with Boats

Last night, I arrived home from work only to find a fog starting to roll in.  I quickly ate dinner and grabbed the camera and kids (my wife was at a staff meeting) and headed out to shoot some fog.  I'm happy to report that the venture was a great success - not only did I capture some nice shots of my kids but I took what maybe a top-10 all time photo for me...this is not that photo. Before taking that image, we explored Chandler Hovey park and shot - I with my camera, the kids with my old [...]

Best Seat for a Sunset – Chandler Hovey Park in Marblehead

I wanted to post a photo from the archive and started going back through the past few months.  Despite the recent warm Spring weather, it felt way too early for an image of snow.  I ended up at this image taken on December 15th, 21012 at Chandler Hovey Park.  I'm pretty sure this was an unseasonable warm Winter day* and I recall taking a photo of the Marblehead Savings Bank menorah a half hour earlier.  As the sun set, the clouds suggested a nice sunset was in store and I drove out to the lighthouse to see about capturing it. [...]

The Full Pink Moon Rises Over the Harbor

On April 25th, the Pink Moon was due to rise and I made plans to try to capture it.  I use a program called TPE (the photographer's ephemeris) to plan out the location of moon rise, moon set, sunrise and sunsets.  I opened up that program on my iPad and started hunting for good vantage points.  I decided that Crocker Park would be the best location for the April full moon and headed there before sunset.  After the sun disappeared below the horizon, I started to wonder when the moon would make its appearance.  There were some clouds/haze at the [...]

Commercial Street Dock Under the Half Moon

On Wednesday, April 3rd, I awoke before the sun rose and headed out in search of good light.  I ended up at Hammond Park and shared an image from there last week.  After that image, I kept looking for new and different compositions and happened upon this one. The now old (and replaced) Commercial Street dock was set at a nice diagonal and the lights on the causeway were still (mostly) lit at 6:10am when this shot was taken.  There was a subtle pink/orange glow at the horizon (almost 90 degrees from the angle of the sun rise) which helped [...]

Annual Marblehead Harbor Lighting

Less than 100 days remain until we can bask in the warmth and gaze at the beauty of the Annual Marblehead Harbor Lighting. This image was taken within 2 months of our arrival in town.  As many of you know, we moved here from Washington, DC in May 2008 when I started work as an Allergist at the Asthma and Allergy Affiliates.  I had little knowledge or expectations for the annual fireworks display having been spoiled by the show in Boston and DC in the past few years.  I decided to head out on my bike and see if I [...]

Caught in the Glow of the Setting Sun

So I had the usual long exposure photo planned for today but I just walked in from shoveling a fresh 7" of snow from the driveway and needed to see something much warmer and full of color and life. This past weekend, a coronal mass ejection (CME) occurred on the sun that managed to hit the Earth just right and set off auroras close to home.  I missed the Saturday spectacle as it took place at 5am and then decided to head out at sunset to catch the tail end of it.  I got to Chandler Hovey a bit early [...]

Day 3 – A Long Exposure Sunset After the Storm

Continuing with this week's theme of showing images from each of the 5 days of our recent Spring storm, here is the one from Friday, March 8th.  If you haven't blocked out all memories of this storm, Friday was a whopper.  We started the day with about 8 inches of snow on the ground.  What was supposed to let up by noon ended up adding another 8 inches throughout the day.  School was cancelled and roads were a mess. I was at work but got out a bit early and had the forethought to bring my camera gear with me. [...]

Day 2 – The Old House and The Sea

By Thursday, March 7th, the storm was really starting to show off its power.  I again headed out at high tide hoping to capture some of the ocean's strength on camera.  I previously shared an image taken at Devereux Beach of a wave cresting over the causeway (LINK if you missed it).  After getting that shot, I headed over to Lovis Cove planning to shoot The Barnacle getting hit by waves. I have captured some amazing waves hitting the Barnacle previously and was equally impressed by the ocean's power on this day.  However, after getting those images (I'll share them [...]

Sunset After Storm – Light Erupts Over the Harbor

I don't know about you but I sure am glad that the storm is passed.  That was a messy, angry, incredibly powerful storm that hunkered down off the coast and sent wave after wave and snowflake after snowflake at us.  At last count, Marblehead easily hit 16+ inches and it felt like a bigger storm in the end than the 'Blizzard of 2013' (aka Nemo). As with all storms though, there is the promise of a great sunset when the last flakes have fallen and the clouds start to break.  With that in mind, I set out after work to [...]
