The Island in the Harbor

On Friday, October 21st, I drove past this island which sits on the border between Salem and Marblehead in the harbor and noted that it had seemed to reach peak color for the Fall.  I had been scouting this island for years hoping but failing to catch it at its peak last year.  Luckily, I had been carrying my camera gear in my trunk on a daily basis that week and, even more so, I was able to finish up work at 4pm and get back in time for sunset.  I tried a number of angles from different vantage points [...]

Trees Rise from a Colorful Swamp

It took a while to happen but the leaves have finally started to show their Fall colors.  I rode along the rail trail on October 18th and stopped at a small opening through which I noted this small swamp.  The bare trunks rising from it contrasted nicely against the changing colors in the background.  I waited for a break in the clouds to bring out the colors and captured this image. Technical: Shot at f/2.8 to make the foreground trunk stand out and blur the background.  Used a circular polarizer to bring out the reflection in the water and help [...]

The International Free Sail Pond Regatta hits Redds Pond

Yesterday was the first day of the US-UK International Free Sail pond yacht regatta.  It was a beautiful windy and warm October day to watch these boats sail along Redds pond.  You couldn't ask for a more picturesque scene!  The sailing continues today so make sure you head down there to watch this competition.

Reflections on a Year

Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of this website.  What started as a desire to learn more about my new hometown by shooting photos every Wednesday, has turned into an incredible experience.  In this past year, I have published 94 posts of images of this town.  Over 200 people have 'liked' the Wednesdays in Marblehead Facebook page.  Fifty people signed up to receive regular email updates.  The home page has been viewed over 1200 times (at least since I installed the plugin to keep count).   Meanwhile, I have become a member of the Marblehead Arts Association.  I've [...]

Fireworks over the Harbor

Marblehead was recently voted in the top 15 for locations to watch fireworks on the Fourth of July.  Looking at this scene of people gathered on the rocks of Fort Sewall with the light of the fireworks balanced by the lighthouse and flares illuminating the harbor, it really is no wonder.  The fireworks committee put on a great show again this year which went off on schedule despite the threat of storms in the area. As the fireworks display is privately funded, I will be donating 20% of the proceeds from sales of any past and future fireworks images towards [...]

The Sun Also Rises

Following the purple dawn and a deep red sky, the sun began its slow ascent just to the left of the lighthouse at Chandler Hovey park.  This was shot from Hammond park and the clouds were doing a great job of magnifying this already amazing scene.  I can't believe my good fortune to have those wisps of clouds line the red sun as it made its way up. This the third of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way to lead up to my entry in the Marblehead Festival of the Arts as [...]

Let There Be Light

Following a few minutes after yesterday's view of a purple dawn, the sky turned a deep red that was reflected by the boats in the harbor.  The clouds formed an incredible shape that looked a bit like the eye of a hurricane as they slowly drifted by.  I was fortunate that the wind was minimal as it allowed for a longer exposure that served to accentuate the saturation of the entire scene. This the second of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way to lead up to my entry in the [...]

Little Harbor

Haven't had a chance to post this week.  Have been working on some shots of Ware and Oliver ponds but they aren't quite ready yet.  So I figured I would go to a shot from the week prior when I drove by little harbor on the way to Waterside Cemetery in hopes of finding some foliage.  I had to stop when I saw this scene before me.  From the reeds near shore to the stone wall, the island and anchored boats, this is a great snapshot of the beauty of our town. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 17-55mm 2.8 lens.  6 exposure [...]

Still Morning at Black Joe’s Pond

Continuing the theme for the week, here is Black Joe's pond on an early morning shoot.  I drove by this spot a few months ago and saw the boat on shore which immediately made me add this to my 'must shoot' list in town.  Headed here after the Redd's pond sunrise shot and was treated to a great scene (including a family of ducks in the distance). Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 17-55/2.8 lens.  6 Bracket exposure.
