The Sun Sets Over Marblehead Harbor

Last week, I shared a recent favorite image of the sunset as seen from Chandler Hovey Park [LINK].  When I first arrived at the park, I actually ran past the lighthouse and to the edge of the land drawn by the incredible colors you see here.  I took 4 photos at this spot before walking back toward my car in search of the more expansive view that I ended up favoring. For this image, I was drawn not just to the vibrant colors of the setting sun but also to the boats anchored in Marblehead Harbor.  The sun not only [...]

Sunset Cloud at Devereux Beach

Yesterday, I shared the image of cannon fire at sunset.  Before crossing the causeway, I had stopped at Devereux Beach and noticed this single cloud reflecting the golden light of the setting sun.  I chose a portrait orientation so that I could include the light reflecting off the ocean water and the surf along the sand. Seemed like a perfect image heading into the Memorial Day weekend.

Firing the Cannon at Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

On Tuesday night, I headed out after putting the kids to bed in hopes of capturing another good sunset.  While the clouds and approaching storms should have combined to put on a strong show, the light never really materialized.  I had driven to Chandler Hovey again but didn't make it out of the car before turning back.  On the way back, I turned down Foster Street to see what the view was like.  As I got out of the car, I noticed someone sitting by the cannon and realized I had made it in time to witness the great Marblehead [...]

Marblehead Lighthouse Aglow in the Colors of Sunset

On Saturday, I remember feeling as if weeks had passed since I last went out to take a landscape image.  When I looked back at my archive, the real answer was that only 6 days had passed.  That being said, my last sunset was 12 days ago...okay, maybe I need help. With that feeling of a need to go out again, I looked out my bedroom window at 7pm and noted some nice clouds and light forming.  I 'convinced' the kids to watch just a bit of TV til I got home and got a knowing nod from my wife [...]

Best Seat for a Sunset – Chandler Hovey Park in Marblehead

I wanted to post a photo from the archive and started going back through the past few months.  Despite the recent warm Spring weather, it felt way too early for an image of snow.  I ended up at this image taken on December 15th, 21012 at Chandler Hovey Park.  I'm pretty sure this was an unseasonable warm Winter day* and I recall taking a photo of the Marblehead Savings Bank menorah a half hour earlier.  As the sun set, the clouds suggested a nice sunset was in store and I drove out to the lighthouse to see about capturing it. [...]

Sunset over Rams and Tinkers Island

While this image was not taken during the same outing as the four others shared this week, it was also taken on that same Wednesday in Marblehead.  I had returned home and started working on the images you've seen already when the sky started to turn again and I began to wonder if we might be treated to a great sunset.  I had trouble deciding where to go but found myself at Preston beach just as the sun dipped below the clouds.  When it did, it lit up Rams and Tinker's Islands in a great reddish glow. The tricky part [...]

Caught in the Glow of the Setting Sun

So I had the usual long exposure photo planned for today but I just walked in from shoveling a fresh 7" of snow from the driveway and needed to see something much warmer and full of color and life. This past weekend, a coronal mass ejection (CME) occurred on the sun that managed to hit the Earth just right and set off auroras close to home.  I missed the Saturday spectacle as it took place at 5am and then decided to head out at sunset to catch the tail end of it.  I got to Chandler Hovey a bit early [...]

Day 3 – A Long Exposure Sunset After the Storm

Continuing with this week's theme of showing images from each of the 5 days of our recent Spring storm, here is the one from Friday, March 8th.  If you haven't blocked out all memories of this storm, Friday was a whopper.  We started the day with about 8 inches of snow on the ground.  What was supposed to let up by noon ended up adding another 8 inches throughout the day.  School was cancelled and roads were a mess. I was at work but got out a bit early and had the forethought to bring my camera gear with me. [...]

Sunset After Storm – Light Erupts Over the Harbor

I don't know about you but I sure am glad that the storm is passed.  That was a messy, angry, incredibly powerful storm that hunkered down off the coast and sent wave after wave and snowflake after snowflake at us.  At last count, Marblehead easily hit 16+ inches and it felt like a bigger storm in the end than the 'Blizzard of 2013' (aka Nemo). As with all storms though, there is the promise of a great sunset when the last flakes have fallen and the clouds start to break.  With that in mind, I set out after work to [...]

Long Exposure – Reflections on Little Harbor

In February 2012, I was just starting to get the hang of these long exposure images.  On this particular day, I had gone out in hopes of capturing Gerry Island at sunset.  While I started to photograph the island and little harbor surrounding it, my eye quickly latched on to the collection of houses along Fort Sewall Terrace that faced the harbor.  As the sun began to set, the colors in the sky took hold and I started to shoot longer and longer exposures in the fading light.  I had previously shared an image with the houses reflecting in little [...]
