Sunset from Fort Sewall Overlooking Marblehead Harbor

On the same evening that I captured an image over Gerry Island [LINK} and then the new composition of a tree at Fort Sewall [LINK], I was also treated to a remarkable sunset.  I hadn't thought that the light or clouds would develop into much of a show on this outing but, as I walked back along the path toward the great tree at Fort Sewall, I noticed these great undulating clouds forming over Marblehead harbor.  Knowing there was an unobstructed view to be had with a little creative fence jumping, I clambered down to a ledge and set up [...]

Anticrepuscular Rays at Sunset over Little Harbor

On July 4th, I had decided to shoot the fireworks from a new vantage point overlooking little harbor.  I had been excited about a possible bonus sunset shot during the day as great big clouds kept forming overhead.  Those had dissipated by sunset and I figured I would have to 'settle' for an incredible fireworks display.  Beginning at 8:15pm, I started to notice a very odd triangle of light in the sky seeming to emanate from near the lighthouse.  As the sun set, the triangle became rays of light that reached their peak with this image.  At the time, I was floored [...]

Looking out over Gerry Island from Fort Sewall

On the same day that I captured a new (to me) composition of the road under a tree at Fort Sewall which I shared yesterday, I also snagged this image of Gerry Island at sunset.  While the light was not as spectacular as I might have hoped (though it ended up making up for it later...), the golden glow was reflected off the water below and lit up the nearby grass to great effect.  I needed to put in quite a bit of work to tease out all the great light and potential in this image and decided to show [...]

Under a Tree at Fort Sewall

On Sunday, June 16th, I decided to end Father's Day with a photoshoot.  I had noted the possibility of a good sunset and decided to head to Fort Sewall to explore possible images.  I have photographed Fort Sewall on numerous occasions and in various conditions so the thought of finding a new composition in this relatively small area was the last thing I had expected.  However, after descending a set of stairs, I looked back and found this scene before me. The tree and its canopy perfectly placed over a trodden dirt path with boats carefully arranged on their moorings [...]

Firing the Cannon Under a Rainbow – Dolphin Yacht Club

Five yacht clubs in five weeks and it ends with a bang!  For those who might have missed the start of this project, it all began on May 20th when I found myself facing a lackluster sunset and decided to shoot the first of the yacht clubs firing the cannon at sunset.  It was supposed to finish on Tuesday night at the Dolphin Yacht Club.  I had called ahead a week prior and spoken to a wonderfully friendly South African gentleman who ran the launch.  He invited me down to shoot the cannon and the stars seemed to align well [...]

Full Double Rainbow over Marblehead

On Monday night, I shared the story and first image from my wild race to capture the incredible double rainbow that took shape at sunset over Marblehead.  [LINK] As I mentioned, I had driven to Bass Rock Lane as it was the closest spot to the house offering unobstructed views of the water.  Shortly after capturing the image of a double rainbow that I shared immediately after coming home, I turned the camera to the portrait/vertical orientation and fired off 6 shots in the hopes of capturing the full double rainbow. While the earlier shot required little in the way [...]

Firing the Cannon at Sunset – Marblehead Yacht Club

On Wednesday, June 5th, I was able to visit the fourth of our yacht clubs and capture this image of the cannon firing at sunset over Marblehead harbor.  I had phoned the Marblehead Yacht Club when the conditions looked good for sunset and received permission to head down and try to capture their cannon firing at sunset.  When I arrived, I introduced myself to the launch driver and designated cannon shooter for the night - Dan.  It dawned on me as I sought out a composition just how different each of the cannons had been.  On this occasion, I had [...]

Firing the Cannon at Sunset – Boston Yacht Club

After capturing yesterday's image of the woman running across the causeway and Monday's image of Castle Rock seen from Sky High, I decided to see if I could capture the third of five yacht clubs firing the cannon at sunset.  As I mentioned in the two previous posts, the first image was a happy accident but quickly led to this project and a pursuit to learn more about when this great tradition originated in Marblehead. I crossed back over the causeway and headed to the Boston Yacht Club on what ended up being a day when they were closed.  I [...]

Castle Rock seen from Sky High

One of the most rewarding result of starting Wednesdays in Marblehead has been the incredible people whom I have met and who have invited me into their homes.  Such was the case at 'Sky High' which I had happened to photograph recently from atop Castle Rock when on an outing driven by the turquoise waters that had suddenly appeared.  The image turned into a canvas order and the delivery of the print turned into an hour long conversation and tour of this amazing house and its residents. It wasn't one week later when I called the owners during a sunset [...]

Firing the Cannon at Sunset from the Corinthian Yacht Club

Last week I shared an image of the cannon being fired at sunset from a yacht club.  That image came about by chance as I happened to end up at that spot during a fairly lackluster sunset and got the idea to focus on the cannon fire.  Click here to see that image and read a bit more about this tradition in Marblehead:  Cannon at Sunset After that incredible experience, I decided to try to photograph the other yacht clubs firing their cannons at sunset.  Next up was the Corinthian Yacht Club.  I first ventured out here on May [...]
