A Bit of Claustrophobia at the Gerry School

Continuing with last week's tour of the Gerry School in advance of Town Meeting, here are three vertical shots aimed at capturing very different locations in the old school. Above is an image of a child's chair and table underneath the flag was spotted in the basement gymnasium.  There was something about the simple scene with a note written on the whiteboard and the gym mats stacked neatly on the side that grabbed my attention. On the left is the view from outside one of the classrooms at the Gerry School.  The small corridor has been every inch of space in use [...]

Pink Fire in the Sky over Marblehead Harbor

Saturday was a busy day and one filled with incredible light.  I had gone out earlier that afternoon to shoot sailboats racing in the Jackson Cup and then returned when I saw a clearing near the horizon and high clouds with an undulating structure forming above. I debated where to stop and shoot what was likely to be a beautiful sunset and decided on Chandler Hovey Park where I hadn't captured images in some time.  I wasn't alone at the park as the benches were filled with people taking advantage of the warm Spring day to sit and enjoy this [...]

Words of Wisdom over the Cafeteria – Gerry School

I mentioned last week that I had visited the Gerry School on Wednesday to explore the old school in anticipation of Town Meeting this Monday.  Here are a few more images of the school for those who passed through these halls as children or have kids in the Coffin/Gerry School district. Above is the warming station or cafeteria where food is reheated after being made at the Village School.  Children pick up their meal and then return to their classrooms to eat at their desks.  Above the cafeteria is a quote by Elbridge Gerry that reads: "It is the duty [...]

Perfect Day for Racing – The Jackson Cup

This weekend, the Jackson Cup took place inside Marblehead Harbor as the 18th annual invitational team race was held by the Boston Yacht Club.  This may be the most beautiful sailing race to watch as the boats cross in front of familiar landmarks such as Abbot Hall when viewed from the Neck and Marblehead Light when seen from Hammond Park. Saturday began with rain and grey skies but the sun came out around 2:30pm and I took that as a good sign to head out to shoot the sailboats crossing in front of Abbot Hall as they competed for the [...]

Stairwell Mural – Gerry School

As Town Meeting approaches and the Gerry School feasibility study with it, I thought it would be helpful to visit one of the older schools still in use in Massachusetts having been built in 1906.  I visited the grounds of the Gerry School on Wednesday and was joined there by two local photographers I greatly admire - Rick Ashley and Jared Charney.  While Jared shot photos with kids in them to give the place a sense of life and add some scale, Rick shot from the first floor having recently injured his achilles while receiving an award for his photography [...]

Budding Trees under Purple Skies

After capturing the image shared earlier this week at Crocker Park, I headed up the path and toward my car.  As I looked over my shoulder, I found this scene before me and decided I needed to capture at least one more image of the purple skies over Marblehead Harbor. I composed this image to include the budding trees which line the path leading towards the harbor.  Can't wait for the float to be installed for the Summer at the end of this path.  Seems like only a few more weeks before Crocker park is filled with people and dogs [...]

Blue Moon and Blue Boats – Marblehead Harbor

One of my favorite images captured in 2015 was a close up of the blue moon rising over Chandler Hovey Park with people clearly visible near the base of Marblehead Light watching the beautiful sight.  As is the case with many outings, that was not the only image captured on that late July evening as I tried out many different compositions to capture the scene before me. This image was taken shortly after the close up shot as the full blue moon floated above the horizon having cleared the rocky landscape of the park.  The moon came up in a [...]

The Grandstand at Seaside Park

In May 2014, I was still getting the hang of capturing these black and white infrared images when I drove by Seaside Park and had to stop and take a few shots.  I had quickly learned that foliage against blue skies made for a great combination in infrared and this scene before me offered the best of both. Though the bases had not yet been placed in position, the grandstand at Seaside Park stood perfectly centered in its dark wood color amidst a sea of foliage that shone white in this final image.  The grass similarly glowed and was broken [...]

Catching the Good Light over Marblehead Harbor

This Spring has certainly seen an odd start with bursts of snow and whole weeks lost to rain.  Last week as yet another rainy day came to an end, the clouds which had been so solid for much of the day began to break up and offered the first chance in weeks of a decent sunset.  As sunsets now take place after 7pm, I was able to head out after work and dinner at home to Crocker Park in the hopes of catching some good light reflecting off the clouds over Marblehead harbor. I arrived at Crocker Park to find [...]

Rainbows and Rain Clouds

I mentioned in Wednesday's post that I can't wait for warm days and the long Summer sunsets that accompany them.  The other fun part of Summer can be found with passing storms and chasing down rainbows.  For some reason, 2015 offered a nearly endless supply of rainbows and they seemed to occur at the perfect time in relation to work and family responsibilities. This particular rainbow formed on a Friday night in July.  As soon as I arrived at home, I grabbed my camera gear and headed out to the nearest location - Bass Rock Lane.  From there I was [...]
