Low Tide in Marblehead – Boats in the Harbor

This is the first in a series that will span all of next week exploring the area around the causeway during an incredibly low tide in Marblehead.  I had gone out on Tuesday night as clouds had been building during the day and I was hoping for a repeat of the incredible light at sunset the night before (which I had watched from a window). As I headed out, I checked the tides and noted they were at very low levels in large part due to the recent 'super moon' that had just set that morning.  I decided to drive [...]

From the Rooftops – The Three Steeples

I have shared two images from this newest location of my From the Rooftops series - St. Micheal's Church.  I was fortunate to be invited to the top of the scaffolding at sunset and even more so to have great light with which to capture the scenes before me. One of the first things I noticed was the view of Grace Community Church and I started to photograph its familiar structure only to then note that I could include Old North Church's steeple as well.  It was only after walking near the edge of the scaffolding that I found this [...]

The Light Show at Crocker Park

On August 27, a late Summer heat wave set up atmospheric conditions that resulted in an explosion of colors at sunset.  I was at Crocker Park shooting toward the lighthouse when I turned and saw the light show begin behind me.  I have shared one other image from this set thus far but couldn't wait to share this one. One of the first decisions I need to make when capturing a scene is the composition and, right off the bat, the orientation.  Of the 1,000 images I have shared of Marblehead, 75% are horizontal and 25% vertical.  With this particular [...]

Last Days of Summer in Marblehead

After capturing and sharing an iPhone image of yesterday's blue hour and overcast sunrise, I received a comment on my Facebook page that read "Feels like summer is gone".  And, she was right.  We just had our first near heat wave of the entire Summer that ended with an incredible lightning storm.  I had actually gone out on this Sunday hoping for some great clouds and light as remnants of the atmospheric disturbance but ended up with a very muted sunrise.  It did indeed feel like we were in the very last days of Summer in Marblehead. As it turns [...]

Waiting for a Ride in Marblehead Harbor

It's interesting to watch the traffic in Marblehead Harbor during the morning blue hour as the sunrise approaches.  On this particular Sunday, I had gone out in hopes of interesting skies left over from the intense lightning storm that seemed to signal the end of Summer.  While the scene before me was calm and peaceful, I quickly lost hope for a brilliant sunrise that would explode in colors over the harbor. Instead, as I waited on the light, I noted someone waiting at the end of a float at State Street landing.  With the minimal light, I had to shoot [...]

Infrared Marblehead – Stand Up Paddle in Little Harbor

I haven't shared an infrared image of Marblehead in some time and thought I would go with this one to finish off the week.  In mid-June, I had taken to my bicycle with only the infrared camera in hand to capture images of Marblehead in this unique light.  The conditions were perfect with deep blue skies and big white cumulus clouds that I knew would translate well into black and white images. At one point I had made my way to Fountain Park and found this clearing in the trees from which I could see Little Harbor in the mid-ground [...]

Fog and Shadows at Old Burial Hill

Back to the days of fog in mid-July for this image of Old Burial Hill.  I had started photographing scenes of dense fog resulting from a Smoky Sou'Wester on Beacon Street at Grace Oliver beach and then walked from there until I ended up at Old Burial Hill and, later, Redd's Pond. As I made my way around gravestones in the old cemetery, I noticed the way the light broke through the trees with the fog accentuating the contrast of light and shadows.  I stopped at this point and switched to a vertical orientation to capture the fog and shadows at [...]

Historic Downtown and Marblehead Harbor

Back to the top of St. Michael's Church for this From the Rooftop view looking out over historic downtown and Marblehead harbor.  I mentioned in Monday's post that I had been invited to the top of the scaffolding around St. Michael's Church on Friday night and had spent the first part of that night capturing scenes of Marblehead from the unique elevated vantage point.  I had just thought that I was finished with my From the Rooftop series after climbing to the top of Marblehead Light and, with one phone call, I have many more images to share in this [...]

Out for a Paddle in Marblehead Harbor

On Wednesday, July 30th I was out on the causeway waiting to cheer on a limousine as it drove around Marblehead and found myself staring at some beautiful cloud formations over Abbot Hall.  By now the tower of Abbot had been adorned with a big 'M' and so I was in search of new vantage points from which to capture the school symbol and colors. As I decided on the best location for this composition, a woman got on to a stand up paddle board from Riverhead Beach and went out for a paddle in Marblehead Harbor.  The water was [...]

300 Years Later – A New Steeple for St. Michael’s Church

On Thursday, August 28, a crowd gathered in the historic downtown section of Marblehead to watch as a new steeple was placed atop St. Michael's Church.  The Episcopal church was founded in 1714 and originally had a wooden steeple above the building but decay led to its removal in 1793.  I was disappointed that I would miss the steeple rising that took place on that Thursday but was thrilled when I heard from one of its officers who invited me up the scaffolding for a closer view of the steeple as well as the temporary 'rooftop' view. We met at [...]
