Fall in Marblehead – Perfect Morning for Golf at Tedesco Country Club

On Wednesday, October 23rd, the Town of Marblehead seemed primed to display peak Fall foliage colors.  I had been scouting locations for two weeks and the conditions seemed perfect on this Fall morning to venture out and capture them all.  I plan on sharing images this week taken from this single day and showcasing five very different Fall views of Marblehead. Tedesco Country Club was my first stop on this particular morning.  I had been watching a few trees that line the first hole and noticed their color gradually changing and brightening over the week.  I arrived on Salem Street [...]

Halloween Race in Front of Abbot Hall

On Saturday, I decided to head out to catch the start of the Annual Eastern Yacht Club Halloween Race in Marblehead Harbor.  The conditions were perfect for racing with strong winds but that made for less than fun conditions standing across the harbor shooting the action.  I started off getting images of the colorful sailboats crossing in front of Old North Church and was hoping the race course would extend out toward Abbot Hall even though that section of the harbor seemed to be fairly full with boats (for this late in the season). It turned out that the image [...]

Fort Sewall from the Water

Another week has come to an end and I thought it fitting to close the week with a sunny image taken from the water.  This one of Fort Sewall comes from a boat trip to Childrens Island taken on July 30th.  We were heading out on the Hannah Glover for the parents' night that is part of every camp schedule.  I brought the camera and, as was the case last year, we were treated to some great clouds and light on the trip there and back. Hope you enjoy this view of Fort Sewall as you get ready for the [...]

All Along the Causeway

I shared an image of the sunset over Marblehead Harbor on Tuesday that came from a shoot on August 19th.  This image was taken about an hour earlier and it seemed like a good time to share it as well. I've taken very few images from the small park that stands on the Marblehead Neck side of the causeway.  It is a great spot with views of the ocean and Boston (on a clear day) and has nice benches that seem to beg visitors to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.  While there, I noticed the interesting lines that [...]

The Lobster Shanty

The lobster shanties that line Fort Beach Way seem to offer a wealth of photographic opportunities.  This one in particular with its great lines has been begging to be photographed and yet the light never seemed right or there was too much clutter or not enough lobster traps to fit together as a solid composition. On this particular day, I headed out when I saw just enough cloud cover and hoped I would make it in time to catch some light at the right angle off the curved roof of this particular lobster shanty.  As it turned out, I couldn't [...]

Sunset Lights up the Boats in Marblehead Harbor

This past August featured some incredible sunsets that formed over Marblehead Harbor.  I tried to capture as many as I could and was amazed at how much the colors would vary from day to day. This particular sunset took place on August 19th.  I decided to shoot from the Pleon launch but, at the last minute, walked down to the float on the water to get a different vantage point.  From this view at water level, the boats in Marblehead harbor took on a larger part of the composition and the light reflected deeper into the frame.  I made sure [...]

Changing Colors at Crocker Park

I mentioned over the Summer that I happened upon a new composition including this tree's canopy and Abbot Hall one morning when I was out on a sunrise shoot.  As others commented at the time, the scene would lend itself well to a Fall shoot with changing colors in the leaves. In early October, I headed out to Crocker Park with this scene in mind.  The tree had started to change its colors for the Fall and several had already made their way down to the ground.  I decided to change the composition just a bit so that the swing [...]

Crocker Park on a Warm Summer Day

With Thursday's warm up, I felt some nostalgia for the just passed Summer and immediately jumped to this image in my archive.  This shot was taken on July 3rd while I was out scouting spots from which to shoot the fireworks.  We were in the midst of one of many heat waves and the temperature on this day hit a very muggy 89F.  Not unexpectedly the float at Crocker Park was packed and I decided to capture some images looking down on the scene from the walkway above. If you look closely (go to the full size image on the [...]

Foggy Morning in Marblehead Harbor

Earlier in the week, I became a bit overwhelmed by the number of images I had waiting to post and turned to Facebook to see what everyone was most interested in seeing.  The answers included the expected foliage shots but also a strong vote for more images taken in the fog. This image comes from the morning of September 11th when an incredibly dense fog rolled in and enveloped Marblehead Harbor.  I began shooting from near the State Street Landing but moved toward Fort Beach as the sun rose in the morning sky.  This was one of the last images [...]

Sunset Reflects in the Waters of the Forest River

I mentioned earlier today that I managed to capture the dawn and sunset on Tuesday, October 15th and thought it would be fitting to share both in a single day. As 5:30 rolled around, I stepped out, looked up at the sky and saw an incredible texture of clouds alternative with blue skies.  This was a far cry from the dense cloud cover we had for much of the day.  I decided to head out to Lafayette street where I had captured the dawn less than 12 hours earlier (the days really are getting shorter...) and set up for the [...]
