Turn to Clear Vision

For a while, I had an Experimental Friday theme going on this site.  I was looking back through my archive and found this image taken on June 21, 2012 and not yet shared that seemed to fit nicely with that theme.  This was taken on an outing at Chandler Hovey Park with my kids while trying out a borrowed lens (the fabled Canon 135mm f/2).  I shot with that lens and came away with some favorite images of my children (there's a reason they call it magical and claim there's fairy dust sprinkle liberally inside).  I couldn't help myself when [...]

Marblehead Powder House – Built in 1755

It never ceases to amaze me just how much history resides in this small town of ours.  The Marblehead Powder House is a prime example of that.  Situated on Green Street (a fairly busy residential street) and tucked in just a bit from the sidewalk stands this circular brick structure.  The only sign suggesting its history is the date above the door - it reads 'BUILT 1755'. A bit of searching reveals that the Powder House was built on what was then called Ferry Road to serve as storage for muskets and ammunition.  It did so during the French and [...]

Sunset from Fort Sewall Overlooking Marblehead Harbor

On the same evening that I captured an image over Gerry Island [LINK} and then the new composition of a tree at Fort Sewall [LINK], I was also treated to a remarkable sunset.  I hadn't thought that the light or clouds would develop into much of a show on this outing but, as I walked back along the path toward the great tree at Fort Sewall, I noticed these great undulating clouds forming over Marblehead harbor.  Knowing there was an unobstructed view to be had with a little creative fence jumping, I clambered down to a ledge and set up [...]

Lone Sailboat in Marblehead Harbor

As I mentioned yesterday, I have now shared 700 images of Marblehead since starring this project in August 2010.  I decided to go through my published and 'to be posted' images over the weekend to reflect on that and found this lone sailboat in Marblehead harbor.  This image was taken on July 28, 2012 and I remember going out that day because some mid-day fog had begun to roll in.  This was taken at noon and the fog at that point had been alternating between pea soup and atmospheric or moody.  As I happened upon the lone sailboat, the light [...]

Marblehead Fireworks Finale – The Crowd on Beacon Street

When I first started shooting the Marblehead fireworks, I ran into a bit of a conundrum - how to shoot the fireworks with Marblehead landmarks but not have people in the frame?  As a rule, I try to keep people out of my landscape images and it seemed that I would have to break that rule when it came time to shoot the Marblehead fireworks display.  That first year, I ended up with some shots with people and some without and found that I much preferred those with the spectators.  The effect seemed to be to draw in the viewer [...]

Anticrepuscular Rays at Sunset over Little Harbor

On July 4th, I had decided to shoot the fireworks from a new vantage point overlooking little harbor.  I had been excited about a possible bonus sunset shot during the day as great big clouds kept forming overhead.  Those had dissipated by sunset and I figured I would have to 'settle' for an incredible fireworks display.  Beginning at 8:15pm, I started to notice a very odd triangle of light in the sky seeming to emanate from near the lighthouse.  As the sun set, the triangle became rays of light that reached their peak with this image.  At the time, I was floored [...]

At the Starting Line of the Redd’s Pond Model Boat Regatta

On Friday, July 5th the Marblehead Festival of Arts Annual Model Boat Regatta took place at Redd's Pond.  As we have for each of the past three years, I took the kids to the lawn at Abbot Hall and we built a model boat to compete.  It was the boy's turn for a boat (they alternate each year) so we ended up with a grey on black battleship that he named the USS Constitution and promptly painted on cannons to do battle with the other boats.  We headed down to Redd's Pond at 3pm for the start of the model [...]

Fireworks over Little Harbor in Marblehead

Marblehead is consistently ranked in the top 10 fireworks shows in the United States and each year the Marblehead Fireworks and Harbor Illumination committee seems to outdo itself.  This is my fifth year in Marblehead and the fifth opportunity to shoot the fireworks display.  With each year I've learned a bit more about shooting these amazing displays of light and sound.  Having shot the Marblehead fireworks from Crocker Park, Fort Sewall and Chandler Hovey (twice), I was on the lookout for new vantage points from which to capture the incredible display. I spent much of Tuesday evening and Wednesday scouting [...]

Summer in Marblehead – Jump In!

On Wednesday, July 3rd, I tasked myself with the job of deciding where to shoot this year's fireworks show.  I visited a number of spots including Gas House beach and Fort Sewall before revisiting Crocker Park (the site of last year's shoot).  While there, I noted some great clouds developing over the harbor and started photographing the harbor filled with boats under a beautiful sky.  It wasn't long before I started taking note of two kids who were scrambling up the 'bridge' connecting Crocker Park and the float below.  Each seemed to be trying to outdo the other with impressive [...]

Best of Show – Marblehead Festival of Arts 2013

I am thrilled and honored to announce that the jurors of the 2013 Marblehead Festival of Arts have chosen 'In a Fog on Washington Street' as Best of Show in photography (black and white).  This marks two consecutive years of winning Best of Show in the black and white division and I could not be more humbled that the jurors connected with this image. I will be receiving the award on tonight outside Abbot and will be sitting at Khouri's Oriental Rug & Carpeting (139 Atlantic Avenue) on Saturday from 4-5pm if you would like to stop by.  This image as well [...]
