Top 10 of 2018 – #9 Milky Way over Marblehead Neck

This was one of those images that took a lot of planning and easily could have amounted to nothing in the end. I had decided to capture the Milky Way early in 2018 and visited various locations in town with an app to help me plan out compositions and timing. I found that I had a small window between April and August and needed to shoot on a new moon to maximize my chance of capturing the Milky Way. April and May came and went with cloudy conditions. Finally, on June 15th, conditions were perfect and I headed down to [...]

Top 10 of 2018 – #10 Super Blue Blood Moon setting over Marblehead (by popular demand)

I had a hard time deciding on the 10th entry in my top 10 of 2018 list and decided to put the matter up for popular vote. It only took an hour or two for a clear favorite to pull away from the others. In hindsight, I should have guessed it would be this shot of a super blue blood moon as I had two print orders for it over the past few weeks. I captured this second full moon of January on the night of Jan 31. With it being a second full moon of the month, it picked [...]

Sunrise on Frozen Pond

This will be the last new image I share in 2018 (I think) as I plan to start my Top 10 of 2018 countdown on Monday.  That will lead up to the annual New Years Day slideshow looking back at all of the images shared on Wednesdays in Marblehead in the past year. Today's image comes from the morning after yesterday's first snow of the season. We ended up getting quite a bit of snow that day and I was surprised to find Redd's Pond to have nearly frozen when I arrived to shoot the sunrise the next morning.  As [...]

First Snow of the Season

I was looking back at my 'to be posted' archive last night and stopped at this image from December 9th and the first snow of the season. It's hard to believe that we were already seeing snow at this time last year given this year's strange wet fall and cold but dry early winter. I had gone out at noon on this Saturday to capture the falling snow and ended up at this spot on State Street from which I could compose an image to capture the star on the crane (hard to see with it not being illuminated yet). [...]

Flags on Washington Street

I went out last night in the hopes of capturing a nice sunset in historic downtown Marblehead. I drove down Washington Street and then turned around after Old North Church where I spotted this scene of flags on homes and businesses hanging in the pre-sunset light. I quickly set up this composition just down from the Harbor Light Inn and managed to get just enough of Abbot Hall to recognize it jutting up over the distant building. The sunset was fairly muted in the end but did help add a bit of light and interest to this view of Washington [...]

Beacon of Light in the Fog

On Sunday night after capturing the image of the Christmas tree on the First Harbor dinghy, I turned towards Marblehead Light and noticed that it was the only sign of color on this foggy night. I decided to capture the lighthouse decked out in strings of lights for the holiday using a long-exposure. The 30 second image time served to calm the waters of little harbor and accentuate the foggy mood looking out past Gerry Island towards Chandler Hovey Park. The small aperture of the lens also helped add a small star to the light produced by the green beacon [...]

Guardians of the Eastern

Not long after capturing Glover's Regiment on the stage at the State Street Landing, I watched them load up into this boat and reenact the crossing of the Delaware. I shot frame after frame as they crossed in front of Marblehead Light and then watched them pause in front of the Eastern Yacht Club. As I watched through the viewfinder, I spotted one member of the regiment approach the bow and captured this image as he fired a shot back toward shore. It looked as though Glover's Regiment were the guardians of the Eastern - ready to take on all [...]

Framed by Smoke at the Landing

On Saturday, Glover's Regiment took part in the annual Christmas Walk and then arrived at the State Street Landing before 3pm to fire a salute and then re-enact the crossing of the Delaware River. I arrived a little before 3 and tried to find a new vantage point from which to shoot the regiment as it fired three volleys over the water. As luck would have it, the company leader (Seamus Daly) let me know they were going to head onto the stage and I quickly came up with this composition. My hope was to capture Glover's Regiment firing their [...]

A First Harbor Christmas

For each of the past few years, the First Harbor company has launched their small boat carrying a Christmas tree into the waters of little harbor. I've shot the tree with the moon rising behind it and with snow falling around it. Last night, the rain cleared and a dense fog advisory came out which offered a new vantage point for me to shoot the tree and boat. I arrived to find the dinghy heavily weighted down by rainwater and lucked out with the Peach family showing up to pull the boat ashore and empty a few buckets of water [...]
