Sunrise at the Sun Circle

I mentioned in Monday's post that I had spent more than a half hour at the beach from dawn to sunrise exploring compositions and enjoying the unusually warm late October morning.  Well after the golden color had left the morning sky and I had captured the sun rising over Ram Island, I finally made my way back up Atlantic Avenue. Before leaving, I decided to walk a few steps to the sun circle and see how the rising sun lined up with the spires found there.  As it happened, the positioning of the sun was nearly perfect and the morning [...]

The Brick Oil House and Abbot Hall

On October 22nd, I followed the clouds and light to Chandler Hovey Park only to watch the sun disappear behind the thickening clouds before putting on a proper show.  As I walked back to the car, I looked back and spotted this composition I had not previously captured.  There was something appealing about the two brick structures - the brick oil house and Abbot Hall on either ends of the frame with a bare tree in between.

Lightning Strikes Twice in Marblehead

In mid-September, an active lightning storm passed over Marblehead shortly after sunset.  I had setup my longest lens inside the car due to the frequent bolts of lightning shining in the night sky and aimed at Chandler Hovey Park hoping for the best while mashing on the shutter button (well, the remote button to minimize shake...). As it happened, I lucked out and caught not one but two separate bolts.  I shared the second capture as soon as I came home but this was the first bolt that appeared on my screen.  The exposure on this one was a bit [...]

Harvest Moon under the Tree at Fort Sewall

In the past week, my wife and both kids have celebrated birthday - needless to say, I haven't had a chance to shoot lately and especially not the recent full moon.  Thankfully, I captured several images of the Harvest moon that rose on October 4th and haven't had a chance to share them yet. I had decided to capture the Harvest Moon from along Front Street.  I started off at Lovis Cove and then walked along Front Street toward Fort Sewall as the moon rose in the evening sky.  At this point I had stopped at Fort Beach to take [...]

Golden Dawn at Preston Beach

A couple of weeks ago, an unbelievable dawn erupted in the sky over Marblehead.  I left the house as the purple light hit its peak and made a beeline for Preston Beach hoping to catch some of the magical color in the clouds.  By the time I parked and got out of the car, the purple had disappeared but, a minute or two later, a golden color exploded overhead. I quickly composed this image to capture as much of the golden dawn as I could.  With the calm ocean and few waves, the wet sand only served to accentuate the [...]

Pink Sky over Purple Waves at Devereux Beach

Today's image comes from the incredible dawn that took place on October 29 before the storm (literally) blew through town.  I had started off with a tight crop of the ocean waves and wet sand reflecting the building colors in the sky.  As the dawn reached its peak, it created a pink sky over purple waves washing ashore at Devereux Beach.  After capturing this image, I began to zoom out and captured a much wider view as the entire sky took on pink hues (I shared that one as soon as I got home). I'm curious which you prefer - [...]

Peak Color at Ware Pond

On Saturday afternoon, I took advantage of relatively calm conditions to fly over Ware pond in hopes of capturing some fall foliage.  Marblehead was between storms and I knew that the coming one with 50-70MPH gusts would destroy what little foliage was to be found around town. As luck would have it, the trees surround the water were displaying peak color (though more than a few bare branches could be seen as well).  For a lackluster year of foliage hunting, this was about as nice of a scene as I could have hoped for.

Dawn before the Storm

With talk of a storm headed our way that may be bringing 40+ MPH winds and 1-3" of rain, I figured the old adage 'red sky in morning, sailer take warning' may predict a nice dawn.  With that and the very late timing of sunrise this time of year, I headed out to Devereux Beach. When I arrived, I found a few cars in the lot and a couple of fishermen casting lines into the Atlantic.  I took up my spot between them and began capturing images as the dawn built up in color.  I started off with tighter compositions [...]

The Beach at Brown’s Island

Grace Oliver Beach was my first stop on Sunday morning and I launched from the entrance to Crowninshield Road from which I could explore Doliber's cover and Brown's Island.  I was hoping for more color in the dense tree cover at Brown's but found only a hint of yellows and oranges.  Instead of focusing on foliage, I decided to fly higher and capture the whole of the island while focusing more on the beach at Brown's Island as well as the shallow waters. Sunday may have been the final day of this Indian summer as a cold front was due [...]

One Last Sail in October

This was the last photo I captured on Sunday when I headed out in search of foliage.  As the day came to an end, I found myself on Chandler Hovey Park set up for a promising sunset.  As I aimed my camera at Abbot Hall, I spotted a lone sailboat heading out for one last sail on this late October evening.  I adjusted my composition as the boat inched closer and fired off this shot as the sailboat floated into the perfect location. The scattered boats on their moorings are a vivid contrast from the peak of Summer but with [...]
