Sailboats at Redds Pond

By |2016-11-06T12:04:08-05:00March 31st, 2015|Categories: Pond|Tags: , , , |

Continuing this week's theme of black and white images of Marblehead comes this scene from Redd's Pond captured on June 15, 2014.  I had been out capturing images using my old dSLR converted to shoot in infrared and had happened upon a few sailboats at Redd's Pond. The infrared image serves to accentuate the foliage in the trees and sails on the boats while pushing the blue sky and water towards deeper shades of black when converted to black and white. You can see other black and white images in this gallery:

Bleachers in the Fog at Seaside Park

By |2016-11-06T12:04:08-05:00March 30th, 2015|Categories: Park|Tags: , , |

In early December of 2011, a thick fog descended on Marblehead.  I had an image in mind at Seaside park that would work best with fog and headed down there to see if the conditions were right. As it turned out, the fog was even thicker that I had hoped for and set up the scene perfectly.  I used the metal bleachers as a leading line toward the wooden covered ones just beyond. I decided to make this a 'black and white week' so you can look forward to more images of Marblehead in black and white in the days [...]

Swans at Dawn in Marblehead Harbor

By |2016-11-06T12:04:08-05:00March 27th, 2015|Categories: Sunrise|Tags: , , , |

On January 17, the temperature had promised to dip down into the low single digits and I decided to head to Fort Beach at dawn to capture sea smoke.  I arrived to find calm water, clear sky and not even a hint of smoke rising from the water.  As a consolation, I found three swans swimming in the waters of Fort Beach.  They seemed to be looking for food and were moving along the length of the relatively short beach at high tide.  I realized I might be able to catch them with Marblehead Light in the background and set about [...]

Warm Nights and Purple Sunsets

By |2016-11-06T12:04:08-05:00March 26th, 2015|Categories: Sunset|Tags: , , , |

Today's image comes from August 1, 2011 and was taken at 8:11pm as the sun set over another warm Summer day in Marblehead.  There's something about those warm nights that seem to lend themselves to these purple sunsets.  I don't recall seeing them nearly as often during the rest of the year. Won't be much longer before boats begin to fill Marblehead Harbor.

Crashing Waves and Flying Birds at Castle Rock

By |2016-11-06T12:04:08-05:00March 25th, 2015|Categories: Marblehead Neck|Tags: , , |

It's been a while since I've shared an image of Castle Rock and this deceptively warm one seemed a great choice leading into a promised warm up for the rest of the week. In fact, this image was captured on December 21, 2012 just before sunset but the cold temperatures were offset by the warm glow of light that surrounded the scene of crashing waves. I was fortunate in this frame to catch a number of birds flying around the water including one perfectly backlit by the reflection of evening light against a wave in the distance.

The Secret Garden

By |2016-11-06T12:04:08-05:00March 24th, 2015|Categories: Flowers|Tags: |

Today's image comes from September 2011 and a trip through the archives.  I was riding my bike around town and ended up on Lee Street from where I spotted this secret garden just a stones throw from Marblehead Harbor. You never know what you'll find when making your way through the streets of Marblehead.

Ready for Summer in Marblehead

By |2016-11-06T12:04:08-05:00March 23rd, 2015|Categories: Marblehead Harbor|Tags: , , , |

I'm ready for Summer in Marblehead - are you? I thought Winter had loosened its grip on us but last week brought a bit more snow and a lot more cold (bitterly so at times).  With that in mind, I dove into my 'To Be Posted' archive and found this picture perfect depiction of a late Summer day in Marblehead.  The image of boats filling Marblehead Harbor comes from high tide atop the causeway.  Though the photo breaks one of the rules of photography (never put a horizon line in the center), there was too much in the foreground (rocks [...]

Falling Snow on Old Town House

By |2016-11-06T12:04:08-05:00March 20th, 2015|Categories: Snow|Tags: , , |

I realize just about everyone is tired of snow at this point but this image of freshly falling snow on Old Town House comes from one of the earliest snow storms of this season - January 24, 2015.  Who knew at the time that this would be the start of a record breaking Winter with seemingly endless waves of snowstorms and freezing temperatures in between that kept the snow firmly in place. There's something about the first few snowfalls of the season that elicit a sense of childlike wonder and I was thrilled to be able to capture the still [...]

Calm Dawn over Marblehead Harbor

By |2016-11-06T12:04:08-05:00March 19th, 2015|Categories: Sunrise|Tags: , , , |

This image of a calm dawn over Marblehead Harbor comes from the morning of March 8, 2015.  I had woken up early on this day despite the overnight change to daylight savings time and decided to take advantage of the situation by heading to Marblehead Harbor for a photo shoot. I was surprised by the absolute calm of the water as well as the sudden humidity that gave the impression of Spring on the horizon (even with several feet of snow still piled around town). This image comes from the peak of the morning's colors before the sun rose.  The [...]
