In Defense of the Union

The next stop (literally) on my photowalk on Pleasant Street was Memorial Park.  I couldn't find when this park was erected but the center piece is in memory of those who fell in the Civil War and was erected on July 4, 1876.  Wish I had the chance to shoot this one in time for Veteran's Day! I got here just as the sun lay in back of the obelisk.  I chose a small aperture to turn the sun to a star and placed its edge along the memorial. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 10-22 lens.  6 bracket exposure.

The Warwick

It's Pleasant Street week on Wednesdays in Marblehead!  I had a chance to do a photowalk this Sunday (I know, wrong day) and started with a drive down Pleasant street.  While I've made the drive countless times, I did so this time with a different perspective.  I was thrilled to see the Warwick without its usual parked cars in front and spent some time shooting the old theater. I looked up the Warwick and was fascinated to read its story: opened in 1917 and family-owned until closing in 1999.  There is a movement under way to bring back the Warwick [...]

The Barnacle

It feels good to be out shooting again!  Today was my first chance to pick up the camera in two weeks.  Headed out about 3pm and wandered around town trying to decide what to shoot.  Headed down State Street (that shot is coming next week...) and ended up driving up Front Street.  When I got to the barnacle, I looked to the right and saw massive waves left over from the recent storms.  They were just starting to recede after the high tide.  I grabbed my gear including a 10-stop filter to let me take very long exposures.  This one [...]

Sunrise Along the Coast

Today's entry comes from the border between Marblehead and Salem.  I shot a series of photos around town at sunrise and ended up here at the perfect point in the tide cycle.  Was treated to calm waters which made for a calm, serene composition. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 10-22mm lens.  6 exposure bracket.

The View from Leggs Hill

The alternative title for this post is 'what a difference a week makes'.  As you can see below, I shot nearly the same scene one week apart.  Above is sunset on October 27 - below is sunrise on October 20.  It's amazing how quickly fall colors can take hold and completely change a landscape. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 10-22 lens.  6 exposure bracket

Fall at Star of the Sea

I drive by the Star of the Sea cemetery every morning on the way to work and have been waiting for the trees to show their Fall colors.  Last Wednesday at sunrise seemed to be the 'peak' of their foliage (though with a fair number of fallen leaves as is the norm for this Fall).  I chose this beautiful statue for my foreground and lead the viewer to explore the rest of the cemetery.

Regatta at Redd’s Pond

By |2016-05-05T12:19:50-04:00October 25th, 2010|Categories: Pond|Tags: , , , , , |

Every weekend from March through November, the Marblehead Model Yacht Club sails their boats on Redd's pond.  The boats are incredible scale reproductions.  I was lucky enough to visit Redd's with my son during one of their regattas and captured this shot near the end of the race as the boat came to 'shore'.  The fall colors were an added bonus. Techical: Canon 50D and EF-S 17-55 lens.  Single exposure.

The Road to Ware Pond

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, 'Little Harbor', I have been working on this shot for a while.  I had never explored the Oliver/Ware pond area prior to last Wednesday and that brings me to the underlying theme of this blog - exploring the town of Marblehead.  I happened to pick a still day and one with decent foliage to stroll through this area and new this would be the best shot from the day after setting up to take it.  Hope you agree. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 17-55mm lens.  6 bracket exposure.

Little Harbor

Haven't had a chance to post this week.  Have been working on some shots of Ware and Oliver ponds but they aren't quite ready yet.  So I figured I would go to a shot from the week prior when I drove by little harbor on the way to Waterside Cemetery in hopes of finding some foliage.  I had to stop when I saw this scene before me.  From the reeds near shore to the stone wall, the island and anchored boats, this is a great snapshot of the beauty of our town. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 17-55mm 2.8 lens.  6 exposure [...]

Still Morning at Black Joe’s Pond

By |2016-05-05T12:17:23-04:00October 14th, 2010|Categories: Pond|Tags: , , , , , |

Continuing the theme for the week, here is Black Joe's pond on an early morning shoot.  I drove by this spot a few months ago and saw the boat on shore which immediately made me add this to my 'must shoot' list in town.  Headed here after the Redd's pond sunrise shot and was treated to a great scene (including a family of ducks in the distance). Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 17-55/2.8 lens.  6 Bracket exposure.
