Sea Smoke and Orange Clouds at Marblehead Lighthouse

Back to Saturday's arctic conditions for this image of Marblehead Lighthouse and sea smoke.  After capturing Sunday and Mondays' images of sea smoke from Devereux Beach, I circled back and drove down to Front Street.  I stopped at Lovis Cove (the location for yesterday's image) and used my longest zoom to capture the incredible colors that lay before me. The sea smoke around Marblehead Lighthouse was not as impressive as the last time I had captured it [LINK] but the sky more than made up for that.  The low lying clouds were bathed in the orange glow from the just [...]

Sea Smoke – Cold Dawn on Devereux Beach

Saturday morning brought truly arctic temperatures to Marbleheadwith measurements of 2 F (before the wind chill).  I drove around Marblehead Neck to find the best examples of sea smoke coming off the relatively balmy Atlantic Ocean waters and decided the best view could be had from the causeway near Devereux Beach.  I started shooting at dawn when the light cloud cover erupted in pink hues before the sun rose and lit the whole sky in a fiery red (I shared that image yesterday). I sought to include as much of Devereux Beach and the Neck with Tinker's Island out in [...]

Sea Smoke at Sunrise – Tinker’s Island and the Red Glow of Dawn

I just couldn't wait to share this image until Monday so here is a rare Sunday shot showcasing an incredible moment capturing sea smoke off Devereux Beach as the sun rose behind Tinker's Island. After the storm blew through and left us with almost two feet of snow, an arctic air mass was due to envelope Marblehead and with the near zero degree temperatures came the chance of seeing sea smoke.  I had only seen sea smoke on a few occasions since moving to Marblehead and have never missed a chance to go out and capture the fleeting phenomenon.  On [...]

Marblehead Harbor Under a Beautiful Sky

Do you remember that Storm Chasing image I shared in mid-September?  This is what I had been after that day.  Great cumulus clouds were forming over Marblehead Harbor and I drove out to try to capture the scene of the harbor filled with boats under a beautiful sky. By the time I reached this spot, the clouds seemed to be chased by rapidly darkening sky.  I only managed two frames before the darkness caught up to and seemed to consume these fluffy white clouds.  I wasn't long before I would race out to Chandler Hovey Park and capture the storm [...]

Summer Sunset at Devereux Beach

This Summer has offered one incredible sunset after another.  This image from July 15th came about when I was out in search of long exposure images at Devereux Beach [LINK to that image].  Before getting to work on the image I had in mind, I had to stop and compose a few images to capture the beauty of soft sunset light with wispy clouds hanging over a calm ocean.  I love the reflected light off the clouds here and the soft white surf as the water hit the sand.  Couldn't ask for a calmer or more beautiful scene than this [...]

Long Exposure – Clouds Over Devereux Beach

It has been a while since I've gone out to take a long exposure image and this Tuesday spot has been taken up by other images in the interim.  On Monday, July 15th, I found myself with an opportunity to do so once again and headed out in search of subjects.  I had an idea for a shoot at Devereux Beach and arrived there at 6pm to see if I could make it happen.  When I saw these soft wispy clouds hanging over the ocean, I changed my plan and decided to shoot over the water instead.  The three white [...]

North Goosebury Island Under the Clouds

On Tuesday night, a good friend invited me out for a boat ride at 6pm.  My wife and kids were still in Virginia (I had been down there revisiting DC the prior week) and so I jumped at the opportunity.  A quick stop at Mino's for dinner and a cooler of refreshments accompanied us as we headed down to Salem harbor.  Once on board, the sun cleared a cloud bank and we were treated to some incredible light.  Seth took me around Naugus head and Peaches Point and then around Marblehead Neck before heading out towards Baker's Island. As we [...]

Running to Stand Still – Across the Causeway in Marblehead

It is very rare to know that you have captured a perfect image as soon as the shutter is pressed.  It has happened to me on a few occasions over the years - once on this very same causeway and for which I received a Best of Show award.  On this particular outing, I remember watching the clouds build and break through the day only to build once more as the sun was ready to set.  As per my usual routine, I put on the puppy dog eyes and was permitted to run out to shoot while my wife (the [...]

Tinkers Island Under Storm Clouds

On May 24th, the grey clouds that had covered us for days finally parted and, as they left, a storm churned off the coast.  I went out after work while the light was strong and stopped at a number of spots to capture the not too distant storm. This image came from a stop at a home along Ocean Avenue.  I've photographed from this spot before and am always amazed at how much the same scene can vary based on weather conditions.  This time, I decided to focus on Tinkers Island in the distance as the light was best at [...]
