Village Street Launch and Nonantum Road at Sunset

We moved to Marblehead from Washington, DC in May 2008 and rented a house off Village Street.  I quickly became mesmerized by the incredible sunsets that developed over Salem harbor each and every night.  On this particular warm May day, I saw the colors develop and quickly ran down the hill.  I set up on the edge of the launch and took this image of the houses of Nonantum Road draped in that golden light.

From the Rooftops – Washington Street and the Lighthouse

As many of you know, I was fortunate to start the new year perched near the top of the Old North Church shooting the first sun rise of the year.  As excited as I was to capture a sunrise from this vantage point, I was even more excited for a fresh crop of 'from the rooftops' images.  I consider this one of the trifecta of ultimate rooftops on my list (the others being Marblehead Lighthouse and the very top of Abbot Tower). After capturing the sun rising above the neck, I turned my attention to the beauty of Washington street [...]

Sunday Sunrise to Welcome in 2012

This is the first sunrise (and a Sunday sunrise to boot) of 2012 as seen from the steeple of the Old North Church.  To understand how this image came to be, we have to go back a few weeks to the Bus Stop. I had set up in front of the Bus Stop for the annual Christmas Walk through the graciousness of Kathy.  It was there that I met Rhod Sharp and his wife who had stopped by to purchase a calendar.  We spoke at length about Marblehead (we're both relative newcomers - he in 2007; I arrived in 2008) [...]

The Cul de Sac of Lights

Riverside drive has one of the most incredible light displays I have ever seen.  I made my way to the street in mid December hoping to catch a street without cars and aiming to be there before the caravan of cars made it down.  I was in luck and tried numerous angles to capture the light display but none seemed to capture the magic and awe of the display. I decided that the cul de sac would make for a perfect Holiday Planet and thus shot a 360 degree panorama.  17 shots later, I had my starting material.  I ended [...]

Passing Front Street and the Old North Church

Continuing on our journey back from Childrens Island, we passed these beautiful homes on Front Street.  I had never seen these from the water before and they really are amazing.  The golden steeple of the Old North Church shines in the background and the few boats left in the harbor serve to balance out the scene.  The journey continues next week but a new view From the Rooftop will be posted tomorrow.

A Fiery Sunset on Surf Street

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the Warwick Theater Foundation's Auction night to raise money for a new movie theater in town.  I had donated a print for the auction and planned to head over around 6.  Looked out my window and saw some nice clouds and figured we just might get a nice sunset out of them.  I quickly drove down to the corner of Surf Street and Spray Avenue and set up the camera just as the sky seemed to catch on fire.  This was the peak of the beautiful sunset. I mentioned to one of [...]

The Sun Rises on Cliff Street and the Harbor

A few days after shooting the houses on Cliff Street at sunset, I woke in time for a sunrise.  That ended up being an incredible site to behold and was featured several months ago (link).  When the sun finished its initial ascent, I drove out to see if I could capture the vibrant orange sky against the now familiar composition of the houses on Cliff Street with Abbot hall behind them.  This is an almost perfect mimic of the view from sunset and shows the incredible difference morning and evening light can make.

Kayakers out for an Evening Row

Yesterday's post featured a close up of the houses on Cliff Street at sunset.  As I composed that shot, two kayakers started out from Riverhead beach and made their way to the waters in the foreground.  They then took a few minutes rest and I promptly recomposed my shot to include them in the frame.  I liked the sense of scale they offer to the image as well as the slight change in perspective.  I really need to rent a kayak and try this myself next Summer.
