Leading into Marblehead Harbor

After I finished capturing the incredible sunrise that took place on Sunday morning, I made my back to the car ready to pack up my gear and head to the next destination.  As I looked back, I saw the colors were building closer to the horizon and decided to try a different composition. I walked to the float at the end of Commercial Street and found this angle from which I could use the small dock as a leading line into Marblehead Harbor.  The tighter composition made Marblehead Light into a stronger element compared to the wider and more expansive [...]

Spring Sunrise from Hammond Park

With yet another snowstorm predicted to hit Marblehead in the next few days, I decided to head out early on Sunday morning to capture some storefronts for my Keep it Local series.  I checked the forecast the night before and was hoping for the best with the 'partially cloudy' conditions  that were predicted. As I left the house at 5:45am, the first hints of light appeared and I saw some impressive streaks of clouds.  I only hoped that the clouds would hold their shape and be angled correctly when I reached the harbor.  As I drove, I continued to watch [...]

Chandler Hovey Park and Children’s Island

An image from mid-February captured as I headed out in search of the full moon and ended up with a really nice winter sunset as a bonus.  I had been shooting wide angle shots encompassing the nearly empty harbor with the few working boats moored in its protective waters when I saw this composition.  I zoomed in so that Chandler Hovey Park and Marblehead Light were visible under the soft pink hues of sunset while including the whole of Children's Island just beyond. The setting sun added a brilliant warm glow to the scene and the snow served to break [...]

Warm Sunrise over Marblehead Harbor

With yet another polar vortex threatening to bring temperatures down to below zero, I thought it fitting to bring this warm sunrise over Marblehead harbor out from the archives. This image was taken on August 3, 2013 at 5:41am from Crocker Park. Enjoy a few minutes of warmth in front of your screen before heading out this morning to brave the cold weather.

Snow Moon rises over snow covered Marblehead Neck

I mentioned on Monday's post that I had gone out after work Friday (Valentine's Day) in hopes of capturing the February snow moon. I arrived at Crocker Park in time to capture a great pink sunset over Marblehead harbor and a few other scenes of snow that I will share in the days to come. Well after the sun had set and the moon had risen, I had yet to find it in the night sky. I checked and rechecked my apps meant to help track the moon's path but it was nowhere to be seen. I got back in [...]

Pink Sunset for Valentine’s Day

The February full moon (named the Snow Moon - how appropriate) was due to rise on Friday night coinciding with Valentine's Day. I was scheduled to work until 4pm and decided to throw my camera bag and tripod in the car so that I could try to get a shot of the moonrise before meeting my family for a romantic dinner at Gourmet Garden. As I drove home, I noticed clouds building and hoped they wouldn't block my view of the moonrise. Based on the projected path of the full moon, I decided to head straight to Crocker Park for [...]

Dramatic Sky over Chandler Hovey Park

With three images shared so far this week all taken on the same morning of Thursday, February 6th, I figured I would add one more and make this a proper theme. Shortly after capturing Monday's image of the tree at Fort Sewall in the blue hour, I noticed the sky breaking up over Chandler Hovey Park. With the sun rising toward the horizon, light began seeping through the breaks in the clouds making for a very dramatic sky. I could not capture the immense size and power of the scene with the horizontal (or landscape) orientation I had the camera [...]

Purple Dawn from Fountain Park

Time to go back to the archives as the cold weather and recent return from time in the sun has kept me from shooting this week. This image comes from a dawn outing in December 2011.  This was the start of a very foggy early December day in Marblehead and I had decided on a shot from atop Fountain Park to begin the day as the high tide held the promise of reflecting good morning light.  As you can see, the sky did not disappoint and the water did end up serving as a very good reflector of the purple [...]

Passing Boats in Marblehead Harbor

Last week's exercise of bringing out photos that were in the archive was so much fun, I thought I would do the same for this week.  This image was captured on September 19, 2013 as I waited for the Harvest Moon to rise over Marblehead harbor.  I had happened upon a singular opportunity to photograph the rising moon from atop a house overlooking the harbor and wasted no time in capturing images as soon as I climbed up to the roof and saw this view laid out before me. The harbor had been relatively still (though full) when I first [...]

Marblehead Lighthouse in Black and White

I have a LOT of image of Marblehead Lighthouse.  This lighthouse has been an element in more than 100 images shared on this site and seems to be either loved or hated by those who gaze upon it.  The lighthouse definitely has a unique shape and many disparage it for not fitting with other New England lighthouses.  Personally, I've grown to love its uniqueness and the lines formed by its steel frame. As I was going through my archive of images waiting to be posted to the site, I found this image taken on June 3, 2012.  I remember chasing [...]
