Under the Stars

A new moon offers the best opportunity for star shots and one happened to fall on Christmas Eve in 2011. It was unseasonably warm (or at least not bitterly cold) and, after building a toy baby crib and grabbing some very last minute stocking stuffers, I headed over to Chandler Hovey Park. It's hard to appreciate just how dark it was when I set up to capture this image. I could just make out shapes and had to hope the focus was accurate. The Pier at Sunset

I have been experimenting with long-exposure black and white fine art photography lately and planned to capture this image in that fashion. The sunset seemed to have other plans as the sun peeked out behind me and lit up Baker's Island in the distance in a brilliant red. This was taken as a five minute exposure so the water turned still and the clouds can be seen drifting overhead. It seemed a shame to mute these colors so I kept them as-is. Devereux Under the Stars

The final image from this week's series of shots taken under the light of the full moon. In this one, you can more clearly see the incredible amount of light put out by Boston which seems to mimic a sunset. The star trails are just discernible in the bluer section of sky.

The Lifeguard Chair at Midnight

Continuing with the 'Sometime Around Midnight' series, and returning to a personal favorite, here is the lifeguard chair at Devereux beach. I admit to a bit of an obsession with these chairs and had to include one in the midnight series. Again this was taken in the dark but the exposure took two minutes and thus was able to capture all available light. You can see the moon overhead and the stars streaking by. The yellow tint on the chair is from the lights on the causeway. The distant lights to the right are caused by the city of Boston [...]

The Rock at Midnight

This is my favorite image taken on a mid-August night shortly after midnight. After spending some time at Devereux beach, I headed across the causeway to Castle Rock. I tried to capture the waves below and the stars above and was very pleased with this result when I loaded it on the computer at home. This is a seven minute exposure and, in that time, you can see the effects on the waves turning the churning water to mist. Sometime Around Midnight

In the middle of August, I decided to try shooting areas around town under the light of the full moon. I started off around midnight and headed to Devereux Beach. My first image was of the swings and I shot as wide as I could to capture the moon above. With the long exposure (this is a 2 minute shot), the darkness of night is removed and you see a scene that looks a lot like a daytime view. If you look carefully, you'll see the streaking stars in the night sky. More midnight shots to come later this week.

The Fisherman at Castle Rock

After capturing the rainbow from Chandler Hovey, the sky turned grey and I decided to head home. On a whim, I took a detour by Castle Rock thinking the recent storm might lend itself to some crashing waves. I was pleased to see that it did and surprised to find someone trying to fish in the crashing surf. I shot this image using a 1/2 second exposure to subdue the motion of the waves and was pleased to see that the fisherman hadn't moved in that time.

The Grand Finale

After shooting the beginning of the fireworks display from the rocks at Fort Sewall, I made my way back toward the fort with an idea for the grand finale. As expected, the conclusion of the fireworks show was intense with a rapid succession of fireworks going off. I used the great tree as cover to shield the camera from the brightest parts of the explosions and hoped that I could get a long enough exposure to again show the crowd watching in rapt attention. Dawn of a New Day

I really wanted to shoot a sunrise but just could not fathom the 4am wakeup that would be required. That is until I woke last Wednesday at exactly 4am without an alarm clock and figured it must be a sign. The Lightning show at Devereux Beach

I had just remarked to my wife about the relative paucity of lightning and thunderstorms in Marblehead when a monster of a storm swept through town. I tried to capture shots of lightning at Chandler Hovey park within the safety of the lighthouse initially. After that failed, I drove by Devereux and witnessed explosions of light to the south.
