Long Exposure – The Waves at Castle Rock

It's Long Exposure Tuesday and we're going to stick with the fog theme.  On Tuesday evening, I received my new camera to replace the 4-year-old dSLR I had been using.  When I woke Wednesday and noted the fog, a huge grin crept upon my face.  I quickly ducked out of the house with a few ideas in mind.  Castle Rock was actually the last place I visited and I spent at least an hour there exploring the crashing waves and various angles to capture the beauty and power of the ocean. In this image, I extended the shutter speed to [...]

Long Exposure – Tendrils into the Atlantic

Last week, I received an email from a local magazine asking if they could interview me for an upcoming issue. I was floored by the request and happily agreed to meet at Chandler Hovey park with the reporter and his photographer. We had been under boring grey skies all week but the staff photographer asked me to bring my gear as he wanted a situational portrait. I complied and decided to go about with some long exposure images. When I arrived, I noted that the tide against the rocks looked like tendrils and sought to find a composition that would [...]

Long Exposure – Parker Lane Pier

I finally have my days straight so let's get back to Long Exposure Tuesday.  I was out on the Neck in search of flowers earlier in the Spring and made my first stop at the right of way on Parker Lane.  I explored the water and rocks and noted the pier jutting out to my left. As I made my way back to the car, I saw the owner of the house and asked permission to shoot from the top of the pier.  He graciously obliged and I spent a few moments looking for the perfect composition. This ended up [...]

Long Exposure – The Grate at Preston Beach

So I seemed to have mixed up my days this week - From the Rooftops (well, from the air) was posted on Tuesday instead of Thursday so I'm swapping in a Long Exposure today (which normally would go on the Tuesday)... With that figured out, on to today's image.  Back in mid-February, we had a warm spell and I was just getting the hang of these long exposure images.  I was waiting for high tide around sunset and was rewarded on this day with those conditions and just enough clouds in the sky to make that interesting.  I set up [...]

Long Exposure – A dramatic view of a pier on the Neck

A dramatic image on this Long Exposure Tuesday.  Back in January, I began my exploration of the piers that line the Neck and jut out into the harbor.  With a long exposure, still objects are key and so my eye was looking for appropriate subjects as I wandered down to the beach along the Neck.  I had explored a few compositions with this particular pier but it wasn't until I stepped back and included its full length that I felt I had the right one to balance the scene. With the composition set, I simply had to wait...and wait...for the [...]

Long Exposure – Our Lady Star of the Sea Church

At the end of February, the weather turned and the forecasters were predicting 50 MPH wind gusts.  The day started off with blue skies but, rather quickly, clouds started to move in.  With the wind pushing them faster and faster, I knew I could turn the conditions to my advantage.  I started off shooting Abbot Hall and then wandered through town trying to keep the tripod steady through the winds and for exposures averaging 25 seconds. I made it down to Atlantic Avenue and was about to call it a day when I stopped in front of the Our Lady, [...]

Long Exposure – Under the Corinthian

This past Saturday started off with boring blue skies but the weather report promised incoming clouds.  I decided to head out in the hopes of capturing the clouds as they came in and use a long exposure technique to show their movement.  As I drove across the causeway, I noticed sailboats in the harbor and stopped to take a few images of them passing in front of Abbot Hall (come back tomorrow to see that post).  I continued to drive around the Neck exploring possible shots when I happened upon someone I knew on Corinthian Lane.  After chatting with him [...]

Long Exposure – Pylons in the Harbor

As last week's post showed, I am a sucker for a good pier and, even better, the pylons that come first.  When I first heard about a new pier being built at Stramski beach, I jotted down the location for a possible shoot.  As soon as the first pylons went in, I started my scouting trips and waited for the day when the pylons would be in (and before cross beams would ruin the image I was after). On January 29th, I got lucky - pylons in, high tide, calm water, setting sun and just a few clouds in the [...]

Long Exposure – The Pier

Long exposure Tuesday brings us the second image in this new series and one that is hanging at the Hooper mansion this month.  As I mentioned last week, I have sought new ways to capture the town of Marblehead and began with the Rooftop Thursday series.  This Winter, I began to explore long exposure photography with the goal of creating beautiful black and white fine art images of our town. Today's image comes from the pier at Mooring Road.  This was a 3 minute exposure - the camera was placed on a tripod, a timer set and I ran off [...]

Long Exposure – Doaks Lane Sunset

Welcome to Long Exposure Tuesday!  As I've explored the town of Marblehead, I have found that limiting myself to shooting within the confines of 4.5 square miles has ignited my creativity.  This began with Rooftop Thursdays and now continues with Long Exposure Tuesdays.  In long exposure photography, the shutter is left open for seconds or minutes rather than the 1/100th of  a second in a typical daytime photo.  This has the effect of smoothing out water, turning waves into mist and making the clouds into streaks of light.  I have been working on this technique for the past few months [...]
