Long Exposure – The Waves at Castle Rock

It's Long Exposure Tuesday and we're going to stick with the fog theme.  On Tuesday evening, I received my new camera to replace the 4-year-old dSLR I had been using.  When I woke Wednesday and noted the fog, a huge grin crept upon my face.  I quickly ducked out of the house with a few ideas in mind.  Castle Rock was actually the last place I visited and I spent at least an hour there exploring the crashing waves and various angles to capture the beauty and power of the ocean. In this image, I extended the shutter speed to [...]

Long Exposure – The Grate at Preston Beach

So I seemed to have mixed up my days this week - From the Rooftops (well, from the air) was posted on Tuesday instead of Thursday so I'm swapping in a Long Exposure today (which normally would go on the Tuesday)... With that figured out, on to today's image.  Back in mid-February, we had a warm spell and I was just getting the hang of these long exposure images.  I was waiting for high tide around sunset and was rewarded on this day with those conditions and just enough clouds in the sky to make that interesting.  I set up [...]

From the Rooftops – Flying over the Neck

I thought I had reached the conclusion of my Rooftop series this week.  I had scoured old images but did not see any I liked and did not have any shoots lined up.  I was pretty upset about having to put an end to this unique view of our town when Aviv Hod called me.  For those who may not know him, Aviv is a financial advisor.  We met at Shirat Hayam and I came to find out that he was an avid pilot.  As it was Wednesday and my only duties were to stain a desk for my son, [...]

Intentional Camera Movement – The Ocean

On the same morning in which I chased an amazing dawn and came away with photos of a lone clammer, I decided to try my hand at a new (for me) technique - intentional camera movement.  To do this, I adjusted the settings to get a slightly slow shutter speed and swept the camera across the ocean while 'dragging the shutter'.  The result was a bunch of strange looking images and one really neat one.  The ocean was very calm on this morning and with this attempt, I managed to capture the ripples in the water while instilling motion in [...]

The Pink Moon rises over Marblehead Neck

Friday promised a full Pink moon and absolutely perfect conditions for shooting it.  Only problem was that the rise coincided with the first night of Passover.  I somehow convinced my visiting parents to move the Seder up an hour and we were finished eating by 7pm.  I quickly went to the car to 'pick up some coffee' and headed to Devereux beach.  I had wanted to shoot a full moon rising over the houses on the Neck for a while and this was as good a chance as any.  I set up and waited in anticipation... I was not disappointed [...]

Clammer in the Water

A late entry this morning and one that complements the image from Monday.  After racing to shoot the great colors of dawn and finding someone digging for clams, I kept walking and looking for strong compositions with this guy in the water.  When I got behind him and saw this view of a lone person in the vastness of the ocean, I knew I had found what I wanted.  The boat in the distance seems to balance the scene perfectly.

Clamming at Dawn

I had to get up early on Friday morning for an electronic medical record meeting at a local hospital.  As I got dressed and ready for the day, I looked at the window and saw an incredible display of pinks and purples lighting up the sky.  I decided to postpone breakfast and raced downstairs, grabbed the always ready camera bag and drove.  I wasn't sure where I was going but found myself on Atlantic Avenue headed toward Ocean Ave.  The light was starting to fade as I pulled up to Devereux beach and jumped out of the car. There was [...]

Long Exposure – The Pier

Long exposure Tuesday brings us the second image in this new series and one that is hanging at the Hooper mansion this month.  As I mentioned last week, I have sought new ways to capture the town of Marblehead and began with the Rooftop Thursday series.  This Winter, I began to explore long exposure photography with the goal of creating beautiful black and white fine art images of our town. Today's image comes from the pier at Mooring Road.  This was a 3 minute exposure - the camera was placed on a tripod, a timer set and I ran off [...]

Waves coming to shore at Devereux Beach

It felt like the first day of Summer yesterday and a picture of Devereux beach at sunset seemed the perfect choice for today.  This was actually taken in early December when sunset's are earlier but tend to be made up for with longer light.  The waves were coming to shore with those picture perfect white frothy crests and I timed it so that I caught an incoming wave at its peak.  Enjoy and, if the weather holds up, head down to the beach today.

Feel the Waves at Devereux Beach

Nothing tells the story of this Winter better than this photo of waves coming to shore at Devereux Beach.  It was early December and unusually mild on this Winter day.  I had planned to shoot the lights at Old Town House but still had some daylight to kill so I headed down to the beach.  I took a few images of the setting sun but couldn't resist turning the camera toward the ocean and photographing the coming waves.  I got hit by a later wave and the cold brought me back to reality in a hurry but, for a minute, [...]
