Devereux Beach Silhouettes

July 3rd was a very productive day in hindsight.  I used the day to scout out locations for shooting the fireworks the following day.  As part of that scouting mission, I biked to the causeway and tried to figure out compositions using my longest lens.  When I finished, I turned and saw the sun was in the perfect spot to make everyone on Devereux appear as silhouettes.  I took a few photos from up there and decided this was my favorite.  The clouds and surf were great but it's the various people that make this shot for me. If you [...]

Long Exposure – Waterfall at Castle Rock

On this Long Exposure Tuesday, the quest for waterfalls in Marblehead continues.  Shortly after taking last week's image at the beach at Castle Rock, I climbed up to the top of the rock and surveyed the crashing waves below.  The tide was high and the sea produces some great waves which kept covering an outcropping of land.  I made my way down and focused on the farthest end of the land.  My hope was that a perfectly timed shot would catch a wave rolling over the rock and, when slowed, show a mini waterfall as the water below receded.  Needless [...]

Sailing on a Summer Breeze

On this mid-June day, the temperatures had climbed and I was in charge of the children as my wife had a meeting to attend.  After dinner, we piled in the car and headed to Lime Rickey's for some ice cream and then immediately drove to Chandler Hovey park to enjoy it while hoping for a decent sunset.  I spent the bulk of the night photographing my kids but took time to shoot this sailboat as it made its way to harbor.  The light was reflecting off its sail and casting a further reflection in the water.  I decided to shoot [...]

Long Exposure – Waterfalls in Marblehead

When I started this project almost two years ago, I did so in large part to learn more about my new town.  As the shoots progressed, I found that Marblehead really did have everything I could ask for as a landscape photographer - ocean, harbor, beaches, ponds, boats, great architecture.  You name it and I could find it...well, except for waterfalls. On Father's Day, I went out to Castle Rock with the kids and was surprised to see large waves crashing to shore.  I had planned to walk down to the water with them but the seas were too rough [...]

Fishing off Preston Beach

This day has put me in a monochrome mood and this is a recent favorite in black and white.  I was out at Preston beach at the end of May shooting the sunset and some long exposures when I saw this guy make his way out to the edge of the rocks.  I ran across the beach to try to place him in alignment with the distant island.  The sea was calm and the sky cloudless so I focused on the main elements with a plan to convert this to a black and white image.  I love how you can [...]

Rainbow over the Ocean at Devereux Beach

We had a great fast storm roll through on Friday with lightning and rain.  I arrived home from work just as the storm passed and ran inside to grab my camera.  I headed straight to Devereux hoping to catch a rainbow (though I had my doubts as the sun hadn't yet popped up from behind the clouds).  As I drove into the parking lot, this is the sight I beheld.  A beautiful rainbow in the distance and an empty beach with great clouds and distant rain. I jumped out of the car and ran down to the water.  I snagged [...]

Waves at Devereux Beach (intentional camera movement)

A bit of an abstract image on this dreary morning.  I went down to Devereux in mid-May and shot a number of images in the fog.  Afterwards, I practiced a bit more with 'intentional camera movement'.  I set the shutter speed long enough to be able to sweep the camera horizontally and bring movement to the water.  I managed to catch this wave coming to shore with the perfect amount of white foam and nice texture in the distant water.

Fishing in the Storm

We had a short break from the rain on Sunday and so I took my son out to Fort Sewall for some exploration.  The sea was choppy and large waves crashed on the rocks as we were there at high tide.  When we reached the edge of the hill, we noticed this lone fisherman on the rocks.  His perch was precarious and the waves crashed all around him.  It looked like a rogue wave could have toppled him at any moment but he remained there casting his line into the water.  After a good 20 minutes of watching him, they [...]

The Happy Place on Bass Rock Lane

I had gone out last weekend at 8pm to chase some wispy clouds that held promise for a decent sunset.  I realized fairly quickly that the sunset would come faster than expected and I therefore drove down Clifton Avenue and across Atlantic Avenue to get to Surf Street.  This area is just a few blocks from the house and offered the best chance for a sunset shot before the light faded. I managed a few images of fading light reflected on clouds over an island in the distance.  As I returned to the car, I noticed this shed for the [...]

Green Moss in the Blue Hour

I mentioned the blue hour in a recent image and explained that the quality of light during this time can be really magical.  The easier of the blue hours to photograph is the evening one owing to the much more reasonable timing of it.  I went out last week to shoot at sunset and continued to shoot well into the blue hour.  I noticed the low tide as I crossed the causeway and ended up taking two photos from the Marblehead Neck side. In this image, you can see the moss covered rocks which carry an eerie glow in this [...]
