Long Exposure – Clouds Pass Marblehead Light

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I had set out on Saturday hoping to use the fast moving clouds for a long exposure image.  It has been a while since I had pulled out the 10-stop filter and played with exposures measured in minutes.  As the light faded, I found myself near the edge of the lot and trying to capture the lighthouse with clouds behind and the crashing waves transformed to mist below. In this two minute exposure, you can make out the streaks of clouds in the sky.  Even more amazing is the swirls of white in the [...]

The Coastline of the Neck

One more image from the recent exploration of a house at 405 Ocean Avenue.  After shooting the tea house, I wandered down to a patio built out of/onto the rocky coastline.  I managed to walk out onto a jutting cliff and saw this incredible view before me.  The rocky coast, the Atlantic ocean and waves, the homes on the neck, a lone flagpole and even Marblehead Rock all stood before me.  I just had to time this one right to capture some water cascading off the nearby rocks to add a bit more tension to the scene.  It helped that [...]

Chasing the Light 1 – Subtle Light at Castle Rock

As I'm always out shooting alone, I realize that my viewers don't have a sense for how a photo shoot might transpire.  I thought I would address that this week with a 'chasing the light' series.  All photos to be posted this week were taken on Sunday, July 8th and culminated in a great sunset that I shared a few weeks ago - CLICK HERE to see it. The night began with a drive out to the Neck when I saw the color in these clouds overhead.  I was hoping to capture the light reflecting in the ocean water below [...]

Long Exposure – Scattered Rocks at Preston Beach

Two and a half minutes - that's how long this image took to produce.  I had set out at the end of May to photograph Preston beach at sunset.  The clouds and sunset didn't offer much so I decided to simplify the scene by composing it for a long exposure black and white image.  The rocks in the foreground balance out the houses beyond.  The long exposure turned the ocean into a mirror to reflect the light in the sky.

Long Exposure – Waterfall at Castle Rock

On this Long Exposure Tuesday, the quest for waterfalls in Marblehead continues.  Shortly after taking last week's image at the beach at Castle Rock, I climbed up to the top of the rock and surveyed the crashing waves below.  The tide was high and the sea produces some great waves which kept covering an outcropping of land.  I made my way down and focused on the farthest end of the land.  My hope was that a perfectly timed shot would catch a wave rolling over the rock and, when slowed, show a mini waterfall as the water below receded.  Needless [...]

Stacked Rocks on the Causeway

It looks like the rocks are stacking up on the causeway... This became a significant collection last Summer and I noted the beginnings of the rock stacks on this June day.  I had seen the rocks a bit earlier in the day but wanted to return when the sun was lower in the sky.  For this shot, I closed down the aperture of the lens as far as it went to bring out the 'sun star' or 'sunburst' effect.  The time of day also added some depth to the shot with the great shadows coming toward the camera. I may [...]

Fishing in the Storm

We had a short break from the rain on Sunday and so I took my son out to Fort Sewall for some exploration.  The sea was choppy and large waves crashed on the rocks as we were there at high tide.  When we reached the edge of the hill, we noticed this lone fisherman on the rocks.  His perch was precarious and the waves crashed all around him.  It looked like a rogue wave could have toppled him at any moment but he remained there casting his line into the water.  After a good 20 minutes of watching him, they [...]

Green Moss in the Blue Hour

I mentioned the blue hour in a recent image and explained that the quality of light during this time can be really magical.  The easier of the blue hours to photograph is the evening one owing to the much more reasonable timing of it.  I went out last week to shoot at sunset and continued to shoot well into the blue hour.  I noticed the low tide as I crossed the causeway and ended up taking two photos from the Marblehead Neck side. In this image, you can see the moss covered rocks which carry an eerie glow in this [...]

Long Exposure – Rocks Leading to Gerry Island

It's Tuesday and time for another Long Exposure image.  In mid-February, I drove out at sunset with the the aim of shooting some long exposure images.  The sky held promise with scattered clouds and the sunset did not disappoint.  This was the outing in which I captured one of my favorite images - Doaks Lane Sunset.  Immediately before that image, I had captured this one. The tide was just perfect for me to walk down to the beach and navigate to these rocks.  I set up the tripod and opened the shutter for 118 seconds to get this image.  As in the [...]

Long Exposure – The Waves at Castle Rock

It's Long Exposure Tuesday and we're going to stick with the fog theme.  On Tuesday evening, I received my new camera to replace the 4-year-old dSLR I had been using.  When I woke Wednesday and noted the fog, a huge grin crept upon my face.  I quickly ducked out of the house with a few ideas in mind.  Castle Rock was actually the last place I visited and I spent at least an hour there exploring the crashing waves and various angles to capture the beauty and power of the ocean. In this image, I extended the shutter speed to [...]
