Sea Smoke Envelopes Marblehead Light

I had never captured (let alone seen) sea smoke before this morning. When I saw the temp was supposed to be near zero on Sunday with negative wind chills in the morning, I decided to try my hand at capturing this phenomenon. I woke at 6, dressed in a million layers and grabbed some coffee on the way to the harbor. There I found my vantage point at Lovis Cove and setup. I started shooting before the sun came up and liked what I was getting. There was a thick low lying cloud cover and the sun took a while [...]

Keep it Local – O’Ramas

Located at 148 Washington Street in old town, O'Ramas sells home linens, gifts and lingerie.  I was downtown looking for opportunities to photograph local stores when I noticed Abbot Hall reflected in O'Ramas window.  I had to time the shot just right to avoid cars reflecting in the windows and waited as shoppers walked down the street.  The end result was well worth it.

From the Rooftops – From the Top of Old North Church

The new year began for me on the top of Old North Church.  Once we made our way onto a balcony outside of the bell tower, I noted these decorative posts dotting the balcony.  The view reminded me of one seen from Notre Dame of gargoyles watching down over the city with the Eiffel tower in the distance.  Seeing Abbot Hall in the far right edge of the scene cemented that image and I sought to capture the image with that in mind.  I took another set of pictures without the post but preferred this composition.

Sailing Under the Rainbow

In early June 2010, I had gone to Fort Sewall in the hopes of shooting the sailboats as they got into the harbor.  Initially, I was quite disappointed as the heavy cloud cover made for very flat light.  At around 6pm, a storm developed just past Childrens Island.  The boats were really moving in the winds that came with the sudden inclement weather. Just as the storm passed and the boats moved across Childrens Island, the sun finally popped through the cloud cover.  With the heavy rain that you see in the background and the setting sunset light, an incredibly [...]

Village Street Launch and Nonantum Road at Sunset

We moved to Marblehead from Washington, DC in May 2008 and rented a house off Village Street.  I quickly became mesmerized by the incredible sunsets that developed over Salem harbor each and every night.  On this particular warm May day, I saw the colors develop and quickly ran down the hill.  I set up on the edge of the launch and took this image of the houses of Nonantum Road draped in that golden light.

Bringing Marblehead into Focus

The Winter without snow continues so I have returned to the archives for another snow-covered scene.  I was exploring Fort Sewall almost two years ago to the day when I noted the viewing scopes available for use.  I had my longest lens on the camera as I had planned to shoot close-ups of the lighthouse.  When I saw the word 'focus' imprinted on the scope, I came up with a more interesting shot. One thing a long zoom lens offers is the effect of compressing a landscape.  Distant objects appear larger and closer to the foreground elements.  Also, the long [...]

Keep it Local – Lee Antiques and Lucky Elephant

At the end of November, I was exploring the Five Corners section looking for businesses to feature on my Friday section.  I looked up Washington Street toward Abbot Hall and quickly focused on this composition.  I love the winding street leading the eye toward Abbot Hall.  The store fronts - including Lee Antiques and Lucky Elephant lead the way and make for a great destination if you are dining in the area.

From the Rooftops – Washington Street and the Lighthouse

As many of you know, I was fortunate to start the new year perched near the top of the Old North Church shooting the first sun rise of the year.  As excited as I was to capture a sunrise from this vantage point, I was even more excited for a fresh crop of 'from the rooftops' images.  I consider this one of the trifecta of ultimate rooftops on my list (the others being Marblehead Lighthouse and the very top of Abbot Tower). After capturing the sun rising above the neck, I turned my attention to the beauty of Washington street [...]

A Marblehead Sunset from Crocker Park

For the past two weeks, the Christmas lights have been on at the lighthouse.  Having captured images of the lighthouse decked out for the holidays from Chandler Hovey Park, I decided to try to find a different composition and headed to Crocker park.  I got there a bit early and was rewarded with a great pastel-pink sunset. As soon as the sun dipped below the horizon, I went to work to capture the soft Winter light and the great clouds above.  This was one of my favorites from the set of images taken that day.  A few minutes later, I [...]

The Lighthouse Under the Stars

With the unseasonably warm weather, I decided to pursue a new photographic avenue - shooting the stars.  The most important aspects of shooting a sky filled with stars is to try to minimize light pollution and to shoot at least a few hours after sunset and before sunrise.  It was with those thoughts in mind that I decided to head to Chandler Hovey Park at midnight on Christmas Eve. I set up near one of the benches (using it as cover from the stray lights at the park) and lined the lighthouse at the base of the photo with the [...]
