Dawn Breaks over Castle Rock

Have I mentioned how much I love the light that comes with Winter?  In late December, I woke up early with the goal of revisiting Castle Rock for a dawn photoshoot.  I had last done this in the Summer of 2010 and felt it was long overdue.  The tide was just about perfect and I set up with my tripod on the loose rocks that double as a beach. The hardest part about this was trying to balance the longish shutter speed to give some movement to the waves while maintaining a good depth of field.  This is the first [...]

Keep it Local – Bancroft and Friends

Bancroft and Friends is the result of Brooke Pickering's love for the arts.  What started as a cement casting business of decorative garden stones has grown to feature a full line of ceramic dinnerware and decorative weather resistant wall plaques.  She also showcases work from her favorite handmade local vendors.  Next time you are on Pleasant Street, make sure to stop in and browse these unique gifts.

From the Rooftops – Winding down Washington Street

I continue to explore frames captured on New Year's day from the top of Old North Church and wanted to share this one with you today.  This was taken very shortly after a landscape view that included the lighthouse.  In this portrait orientation, the houses and road become the focus rather than the other's all-encompassing scene.  I love how the road leads the eye past one and two hundred year old houses to Little Harbor in the distance.

Under the Stars

A new moon offers the best opportunity for star shots and one happened to fall on Christmas Eve in 2011.  It was unseasonably warm (or at least not bitterly cold) and, after building a toy baby crib and grabbing some very last minute stocking stuffers, I headed over to Chandler Hovey Park.  It's hard to appreciate just how dark it was when I set up to capture this image.  I could just make out shapes and had to hope the focus was accurate.  Each image took 30 seconds to capture and I had a few failed attempts before getting this [...]

Gingerbread Lane in the Fog

We've had a fair amount of fog in the past few months and I've been scouting out locations to capture while in the thick of it.  As I drove around one foggy morning, I noticed the rocky wall on Gingerbread lane.  The fog had started to lift and I quickly parked and set up to capture the moody atmosphere before me.  I really liked the green path in the middle of the road and the fallen leaves setting the scene.

Marblehead Harbor Bathed in Purple

Winter offers amazing sunsets and I have been fortunate with the fair weather to be able to venture out and capture some of these scenes.  This image was taken at the end of December while the lighthouse was still draped in its holiday lights.  That was my primary reason for heading out to Crocker park that night.  I felt fortunate to be able to capture the incredible pink of sunset that turned the harbor into a purplish hue.  The collection of boats left in the harbor served as a perfect foreground element to provide balance to this scene.

Keep it Local – Pawsitively Marblehead

Another Friday is upon us and so here is another local business featured on the site.  Pawsitively Marblehead was opened by the owners of Creature Comforts as a boutique for dog lovers.  Creature comforts has been around for nearly twenty years and offers a wealth of food, gifts and accessories for pets.  With the number of dogs that populate this town, I imagine this store has a constant influx of customers (the two and four legged kind).  If you have never been, stop by their Pleasant Street and Atlantic Avenue locations.

From the Rooftops – Grace Community Church

This view From the Rooftops comes from the rental property on Washington Street.  As I waited for the sun to get into the proper position for this image, I looked around and found this view of Grace Community Church towering over nearby houses.  The houses appear to be stacked on top of each other and the angles of their roofs offer an amazing array of lines leading the eye around the scene. If you have or know of any rooftop decks in Marblehead that I can shoot from, please use the contact form in the About Me page.  Thanks!

The Wolf Moon Rises over the Pier

So I had to look up the name for January's full moon and was surprised to see it called the Wolf Moon.  On Sunday night, the moon was just about full and I headed to the private beach at the end of Corn Point Road to await its arrival.  Clouds arrived instead and I had to settle for the long exposure image posted yesterday. I returned Monday night after racing straight from work and got to the beach just as the light of sunset faded.  I quickly scampered onto the beach and setup where I expected the moon to rise. [...]

The Pier at Sunset

I have been experimenting with long-exposure black and white fine art photography lately and planned to capture this image in that fashion.  The sunset seemed to have other plans as the sun peeked out behind me and lit up Baker's Island in the distance in a brilliant red.  This was taken as a five minute exposure so the water turned still and the clouds can be seen drifting overhead.  It seemed a shame to mute these colors so I kept them as-is.  I'll have to come back here another day under more drab conditions. If you would like to see [...]
