Pond Skating in Marblehead

Today's image comes from my 'to-be-posted' archives from January 11, 2015. Many of my favorite images of Redd's come from the month of January when the ice is typically perfect for skating and snow has not yet fallen to affect the surface. I had gone to Redd's on this afternoon to check on conditions and was delighter to find the ice bustling with activity. There were kids and adults skating across the small pond and a pickup hockey game was taking place as well. I decided to set up near the hockey goal and used a slow shutter speed to [...]

Beacon in the Night

On December 23rd, I headed out to capture the full cold moon rising over Chandler Hovey Park. When I arrived at my spot near the Dolphin Yacht Club, I immediately noticed the red, white and blue lights adorning Marblehead Light. I took a few practice shots to get ready for the moon rise but then had a great idea and made a few adjustments. Just before the moon came into view, its orange glow illuminated the horizon. I adjusted the camera to a very long exposure (25 seconds) which served to capture all of the light surrounding Marblehead Light and [...]

Stars and Stripes and Glover’s Regiment

The annual Marblehead Christmas Walk took place on December 1st and, with it, Glover's Regiment arrived to reenact the crossing of the Delaware by way of Marblehead Harbor. Before setting out, they took up position to address the gathered crowd and recount the history of General Glover. I had been set up at the benches behind them ready to capture the musket fire that would follow this speech. When I saw Glover's Regiment lined up under the stars and stripes (and the State Street Landing star as well), I couldn't pass up the shot. Black and white helped accentuate the [...]

Epiphany Bonfire at Riverhead Beach

Last night, the annual Epiphany tree burning took place with collected Christmas trees arranged in a pile at Riverhead Beach and set aflame with flares to create a massive Epiphany bonfire. I brought my kids with me and we separated while they watched and I searched for new vantage points to shoot the huge flames and gathered crowd. I tried walking over to the causeway but the 20 mph winds were throwing smoke and embers in that direction so I had to come up with a plan B. I shot a few frames as well as a short video from [...]

Epiphany Tree Burning – Tonight at Riverhead Beach

The annual Marblehead Epiphany tree burning is tonight at Riverhead Beach. The tradition of lighting collected Christmas trees resumed in 2016 and has been taking place on January 6th every year since (with the one exception last year when it was delayed 2 days due to arctic cold - remember that?) This image was captured last year when the delay meant the tree burning took place under falling snow and made for some incredible photo opportunities. I was set up across the street at the Neckrun Cafe where the slight elevation combined with my longest lens allowed me some really [...]

Moon and Star

I mentioned yesterday that I had gone out on the morning of December 23rd hoping to catch the full cold moon setting. It took a bit of driving around the Neck on this morning to find the right vantage point but I ended up at the end of Harvard Street for this view. The full moon descended just between Grace Community Church and that star at State Street Landing. With the cloudless sky, I was fortunate to capture the moon fairly low in the sky with nicely defined craters.

Shining Star at Sunrise

On December 23rd, I had headed out before dawn to capture the full cold moon setting with a plan to capture it besides the shining star atop the crane at the State Street Landing (watch for that image tomorrow morning).  Before the moon could descend into frame, I found this composition of St. Michael's Steeple, Grace Community Church and that shining star in between with the perfect colors of dawn painting the sky above. As luck would have it, two birds came into the frame and broke up the otherwise empty sky.

Breaking Waves at Sunrise on New Years Day

Each year on New Years Day, I wake before dawn without an alarm clock and head out to capture the first sunrise of the year. I had missed out on a great sunrise the day before (the last one of 2018) and hoped for a repeat performance. With temperatures in the upper 40's, I figured no matter what the morning brought, it would be nice to be out shooting for the first time since the Christmas moon. I drove down Atlantic Avenue and decided to stop at Devereux Beach. The tide was high (and rising) and I had figured out [...]

2018 in Pictures – Annual New Years Day Slideshow

176 images of Marblehead shared in 365 days This year I shared 176 images of which 141 were taken in 2018; the rest came from my to be posted archive.  I actually captured 398 images this past year but, as with years past, I end up with more shots than I can reasonably share and therefore have a growing archive of images waiting to be posted. What started off as a personal website to explore my new hometown of Marblehead, Massachusetts has taken off in ways I never imagined.  When I first created Wednesdays in Marblehead in 2010 and was trying [...]

Top 10 of 2018 – #1 Abbot Hall Caked in Snow

This is my favorite image captured in 2018. On March 14th, I had gone out with my Phantom 4 Pro drone to shoot the streets of downtown Marblehead with a fresh coat of snow. I launched the drone shortly before 7am and quickly found that the morning sun was shining on Abbot Hall and illuminating its face now caked in snow.  I adjusted the height of the drone to get this centered view and then saw the flash of light in the distance created by the sun reflecting off the buildings in Boston. I've since printed this image a few [...]
