Turning Leaves at Waterside

By |2016-05-05T11:09:14-04:00October 13th, 2010|Categories: Fall|Tags: , , , , , |

It seems that Fall is finally coming to town!  Found this tree as I made my way back from a sunrise shoot at Redd's pond (see yesterday's post).  The light was right and the wind died down long enough to get a few shots in.  If anyone has great trees showing their colors in their neighborhood, please contact me. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 17-55mm 2.8 lens.  6 Bracket exposure.

Sunburst at Redd’s Pond

Got up early on Columbus Day in anticipation of another drive up to VT or NH to catch some foliage.  I had driven up to both in the past week and had been disappointed in the leaves this year (most are already on the ground).  Instead, I decided to head out to our local ponds.  First stop was Redds and the sun was climbing at just the right angle in the sky for a sunburst/sun star peeking through the leaves.  Just a hint of foliage to enjoy as well.  I was too excited to wait til Wednesday to post this [...]

The Ocean Breathes – Castle Rock

By |2016-11-06T12:06:32-05:00September 30th, 2010|Categories: Long Exposure|Tags: , , , , , , , |

I added a new tool to my camera bag this week and had a great time taking it out for an inaugural shoot.  This was a return to Castle Rock on the Marblehead Neck.  With the 10-stop neutral density filter, I was able to take this 30 second exposure and turn the ocean waves into a soft mist.  It's a great feeling to produce an image that cannot be seen 'in the moment' but can be appreciated for showing a spot in a new light. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 17-55mm lens with 10-stop ND filter.  Single exposure.

Iron Bars – Preston Beach

By |2013-06-05T21:52:17-04:00September 29th, 2010|Categories: Beach|Tags: , , , , |

There is an old storm drain that opens up at Preston Beach.  The pipe has corroded with time and, on the other side, stands an iron grate.  Over the years, it has accumulated tiny stones of many colors that serve to accentuate the rust, mossy greens and large rocks all around.  This scene changes rapidly with the tides - I happened upon it at just the right moment. Technical: Canon 50D with EF-S 10-22 lens.  6 exposure bracket.

Purple Dawn

By |2014-04-20T14:44:04-04:00September 28th, 2010|Categories: Chandler Hovey park|Tags: , , , , |

Awoke Saturday at 5:30 with the goal of shooting the sunrise from the Neck and, with any luck, the setting Harvest Moon over Abbot hall.  Dawn turned out to be very nice as was the brilliant sunrise at Castle Rock.  Have a number of keepers from the morning and will post them each day this week.  The moon, unfortunately, disappeared into morning clouds.  For a few hours though, I had the entirety of Chandler Hovey park to myself...it made for a great start to the day. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 10-22 with B+W 10-stop ND filter.  Four minute exposure.

Sailing Under the Harvest Moon

The harvest moon coincided with the first day of Fall this year.  I made my way to Fort Sewall hoping to catch the moon as it first came up over the horizon but low lying clouds interfered with the best laid plans.  Instead I was treated to the last Wednesday night race and the moon was good enough to come out of hiding for this shot. Technical: Canon 50D and EF 70-200 f/4 IS.  Single exposure.

Sun Rays over Fort Sewall

By |2016-05-04T08:36:19-04:00September 22nd, 2010|Categories: Park|Tags: , , , , |

Driving home from work last week, I noticed an incredible blue sky developing to the east and replacing the gray that had been present for days.  Grabbed my gear and headed straight to Front Street and then Fort Sewall.  The sun was placed perfectly to get these great rays coming through the tree and helping illuminate Marblehead Harbor. This post also marks the first on my new Facebook page - Wednesdays in MHD.  Please 'like' the page to automatically receive future updates. Technical: Canon 50D and Canon EF-S 10-22 lens.  6 exposure bracket HDR

First Light – Castle Rock

Castle Rock can be found on the Marblehead Neck and includes a nice rock to climb as well as a small beach that only appears at low tide.  It is also one of the first places to receive the sun's rays every morning.  Caught this sunrise on a particularly warm and clear morning. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 10-22.  6 bracket exposure.

Engine 2

The goal for this particular morning was to catch some of Earle's high surf.  Headed out at high tide but found the waves to be quite calm.  On the way home, I noticed that the light on our smaller engine house was just about perfect.  Knocked on the door and the firefighters were great about opening up the door and showing off their truck. Technical: Canon 50D with EF-S 17-55mm.  5 bracket HDR.
