Anticrepuscular Sunset

By |2021-10-31T22:58:34-04:00November 1st, 2021|Categories: Marblehead Harbor|Tags: , , , , |

On October 20th, I headed out to capture the moonset and was disappointed by the small band of low lying clouds that obstructed my view. Less than 30 minutes later when I actually would have loved to have clouds reflecting the light of the rising sun, they were nowhere to be found. Instead I lucked out when I spotted these thin anticrepuscular rays behind Crocker Park. With the light hitting Abbot hall, St. Michaels and Grace Community Church, the rays added just enough interest to the otherwise empty sky on this fall morning in Marblehead.

Heart of the Walking Man

Tom Saltsman has done it again - another brilliant sculpture to bring awe and wonder to the citizens of Marblehead. This year's sculpture is more incredible for having stood (literally) through two storms including a violent Nor'Easter that took out the town's power supply. I had seen the sculpture while it was still being put together and then on social media posts and had this image in mind but the weather would not cooperate...until today. After what felt like days of straight rain, the clouds parted and the sun actually shone. I headed to 32 Pleasant Street and found conditions [...]

Reflections on a Good Summer

By |2021-10-26T21:43:33-04:00October 27th, 2021|Categories: Sunrise|Tags: , , , |

I was looking for a photo to share having built up my 'to be posted' archive with several productive outings and happened upon this image captured at dawn on October 3rd. I had lucked out with a far nicer than expected dawn and sunrise and made sure to capture it with various compositions. Here I tried to accentuate the reflections of boats on the still waters of Marblehead Harbor which was serving almost like a mirror to bring color throughout the scene. As I tried to figure out a good title, I thought that 'Reflections on a Good Summer' suited [...]

Fall is in the Air

It hasn't been the best year for foliage in Marblehead and the season is likely behind us after the current rain and wind passes but on Saturday October 23rd, the bright sun seemed to beckon me to shoot the fall colors. I decided to drive to the Masonic temple and launched the drone from the parking lot and saw this scene unfold before my eyes. I stayed low and maneuvered the drone so that Abbot Hall broke through the horizon while still being able to view the boats in the harbor. I then moved forward a bit to make sure [...]

Unexpected Sunset

“The best things in life are unexpected because there were no expectations.” ? Eli Khamarov I wrote entirely too much about may crazy running around last Wednesday but this was easily the best part of the day. I had woken up in the pre-dawn hours and managed to capture a sliver of the Hunter's moon setting over Abbot Hall and the harbor and then drove all around town trying to figure out where to shoot the moonrise. On a whim, I headed to Harding Lane and then crossed to Brown's Island since it was low tide. As I crossed, I [...]

Hunting the Moon at Brown’s Island

By |2021-10-20T22:15:11-04:00October 21st, 2021|Categories: moon|Tags: , , |

I mentioned in last night's very long text that I had started off shooting the full moon rising over Brown's Island. if you didn't quite make it through the whole thing, here is the section related to these two shots: I headed back across the mud (shoes tied this time) and found that Harding Lane wasn't quite right for the moonrise so I walked back to Beacon Street and then onto that outflow thing where I started to shoot the moon rising against the canopy of Brown's Island. Ran back to the car to switch lenses and back thinking one [...]

Hunting the Moon at Redd’s Pond

Today was a great Wednesday in Marblehead! Started off at dawn shooting the full moon setting and getting lucky with anti-crepuscular rays at sunrise. I thought I would share that shot tonight or tomorrow but then decided to head out to shoot the moonrise. In between, I was invited to Eat Well Kitchen and learned they want to showcase my photography for the month of November!  Going to put up prints next Wednesday (stop by and say hi) and then will be there for a Pop Up on December 4th with books and calendars - Save the Date! So I [...]

Harvard Moonset

By |2021-10-20T07:43:03-04:00October 20th, 2021|Categories: moon|Tags: , , |

So the theme for the week appears to be 'making do when the weather doesn't quite cooperate'... Got up before dawn hoping to capture the full moon setting. I had two spots in mind - the public way at Parker Lane or the end of Harvard Street. As I drove, the sky seemed to hold promise but when I arrived at Harvard Street, I spotted a very small bank of clouds hanging behind Abbot Hall. There was a section that seemed to thin out and I stood there hoping for a few breaks to allow the moon to shine through [...]

Casting Shadows on the Water

By |2021-10-17T20:38:04-04:00October 18th, 2021|Categories: Sunset|Tags: , , , |

I drove around on Saturday trying to figure out this year's foliage situation. The maples had turned early as usual and hadn't put on much of a show. I had spotted some vibrant colors in spots in the past week but not as much as I hoped for. Knowing that peak foliage had taken place on October 17 last year, I figured I had a decent shot of finding some color. Well, I drove around for an hour and just about gave up. Meanwhile, the clouds seemed to hold promise so when I got a text from a friend out [...]

Break of Dawn at Lovis Cove

By |2021-10-11T20:33:58-04:00October 12th, 2021|Categories: Sunrise|Tags: , , , |

So this is where I started on Sunday morning during the break of dawn. I stood on Front Street between the Barnacle and a private home looking down at Lovis Cove (also known as 'Screeching Lady beach'). I was pretty happy with my first few images as the sky picked up the color of the rising sun but then decided to walk a bit further down Front Street and lucked out as the sky exploded in color less than 10 minutes later. I mentioned the alternative name for Lovis Cove when i shared the other photo Sunday morning and had [...]
