Chasing the Light 4 – Perfect Sunset from Parker Lane

As I drove from Cove Lane to the next stop, Parker Lane, I was part giddy and part worried.  I saw the sky take on incredible hues of color and worried that I would miss the peak of this light. I got to Parker Lane, jumped out of the car and quickly set up.  I knew that I wanted to shoot this scene from the top of the stairs but there happened to be someone there at the moment so I ventured down to the waters edge. That composition wasn't working for me so I returned to the now empty [...]

Chasing the Light 3 – Lone Sailboat in the Harbor

The sun had set and the light kept getting better as I stood on Cove Lane (check out Monday and Tuesday's posts if you have missed any part of this Chasing the Light series).  As I watched the light, I decided to change lenses and try to isolate a lone sailboat in the harbor with this great light reflecting off the water. This time, I opened the aperture as far as it went (f/4) so that the sailboat would be in sharp focus with softer focus on the foreground and background.  This helped further isolate the boat.  I also made [...]

Chasing the Light 2 – Sunburst from Cove Lane

So after leaving Castle Rock a bit disappointed in missing the best light, I drove further up the Neck, around Chandler Hovey and parked near Cove Lane.  I took advantage of the public way and walked down to the beach to see if the sunset might hold some promise.  I found this scene before me and a smile crept onto my face...maybe this would make up for having struck out a bit at Castle Rock. I set about choosing my composition and made sure all the elements were where I wanted them. I then closed down the aperture to f/22 [...]

Sunset over Leggs Hill

I've been meaning to post this image for a while now but it kept falling deeper into the archives for some reason.  Back in early December, I remember coming home from work at 4:30pm and, for some reason, I had thought to bring my camera that morning.  The light was interesting as drove toward Marblehead and, as soon as I drove across Lafayette, I saw this scene unfold before me.  The light was perfect, the tide just right and the calm water gave off a brilliant reflection. I quickly pulled over, set the hazards, and ran back down toward the [...]

Marblehead Light at Sunset

This image 'breaks' most of the accepted rules of photographic composition.  The center of focus should not be in the middle of the frame, the horizon should not be a the center either.  The important part of knowing the rules though is understanding when they can and should be broken.  In this case there are added elements to take away from the centering of the lighthouse - such as the tree to the left.  And the diagonal formed by the pink clouds is accentuated by other diagonals in the reflecting pool of water, ocean, and the lighthouse itself.  Hope you [...]

Sailing on a Summer Breeze

On this mid-June day, the temperatures had climbed and I was in charge of the children as my wife had a meeting to attend.  After dinner, we piled in the car and headed to Lime Rickey's for some ice cream and then immediately drove to Chandler Hovey park to enjoy it while hoping for a decent sunset.  I spent the bulk of the night photographing my kids but took time to shoot this sailboat as it made its way to harbor.  The light was reflecting off its sail and casting a further reflection in the water.  I decided to shoot [...]

First Sunset in Marblehead

This will serve a bit as a 'where I started' post.  As many of you know, we moved to Marblehead in May 2008 so that I could start work as an Allergist at the Asthma and Allergy Affiliates in Salem and Danvers.  We had just gotten here from Washington, DC where I had been working and moved to a rental house off Village street.  My wife had found the house and I had only seen it once.  On this night, one of the very first spent here, I witnessed the first of many beautiful sunsets. As it began to take [...]

The Brick House on Doaks Lane

I decided to visit the archives for today's image and looked at shots taken one year ago in June but not yet posted to the web.  This one jumped out at me and I had to use it.  There was something very mesmerizing about this brick house when I noticed it on Doak's lane one sunset day in June. I think wat struck me was the perfectly tall, thin and symmetrical face of this house.  Especially in contrast to the asymmetry in the road below.  Enjoy this unique house on this Thursday in Marblehead...

The Happy Place on Bass Rock Lane

I had gone out last weekend at 8pm to chase some wispy clouds that held promise for a decent sunset.  I realized fairly quickly that the sunset would come faster than expected and I therefore drove down Clifton Avenue and across Atlantic Avenue to get to Surf Street.  This area is just a few blocks from the house and offered the best chance for a sunset shot before the light faded. I managed a few images of fading light reflected on clouds over an island in the distance.  As I returned to the car, I noticed this shed for the [...]

The Causeway in the Blue Hour

As I mentioned in yesterday's image of Green Moss in the Blue Hour, I had decided to shoot both sides of the causeway during a photo walk last week.  This was the second image taken.  In it, I set up the tripod along the water at Riverhead beach to capture the S curve formed where the water met the shore.  I waited for a passing car and then took a 20 second exposure in order to still the water and get the red tail lights to help illuminate the curves of the causeway.  The lamp posts again make an appearance [...]
