Green Moss in the Blue Hour

I mentioned the blue hour in a recent image and explained that the quality of light during this time can be really magical.  The easier of the blue hours to photograph is the evening one owing to the much more reasonable timing of it.  I went out last week to shoot at sunset and continued to shoot well into the blue hour.  I noticed the low tide as I crossed the causeway and ended up taking two photos from the Marblehead Neck side. In this image, you can see the moss covered rocks which carry an eerie glow in this [...]

Open Seating at Sunset

I couldn't resist another view of the lighthouse lit up for the holidays.  After taking yesterday's shot, I walked back towards the car and looked over my shoulder to see what the scene looked like.  The composition of the lighthouse with its extra lights, the lone tree and Abbot Hall across the harbor was too good to pass up (despite the freezing cold).  I stood on a small rock formation and grabbed this image. You might notice in this image and yesterday's that something is conspicuously absent.  I'll leave it to the comment section to see if anyone picks up [...]

The sun sets over the causeway

I was able to realize two images this week that had been long in the planning.  The first was the causeway's lamp posts in the fog.  This was the other.  I had found myself on Harbor View Lane over the Summer and noted this simple composition of the causeway, ocean and sunset.  At the time, there were several boats moored in the way and I resigned myself to wait.  On Saturday, I spent some time photographing various store fronts in Old Town as part of Small Business Saturday and my Keep it Local friday series.  Afterwards, I headed back to [...]

A Fiery Sunset on Surf Street

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the Warwick Theater Foundation's Auction night to raise money for a new movie theater in town.  I had donated a print for the auction and planned to head over around 6.  Looked out my window and saw some nice clouds and figured we just might get a nice sunset out of them.  I quickly drove down to the corner of Surf Street and Spray Avenue and set up the camera just as the sky seemed to catch on fire.  This was the peak of the beautiful sunset. I mentioned to one of [...]

The Sun Sets on Cliff Street

In early Summer, I began exploring the area around the causeway.  I spent the day walking along the causeway and back on the rocks below trying to find interesting compositions.  I noticed that Abbot hall kept peaking through at various points and noted some of my favorites.  One night in early June, the sunset seemed to hold promise and I drove out to the causeway.  I grabbed this close-up view featuring three beautiful houses on Cliff Street with Abbot Hall visible over their roofs. I have another favorite from this night that I'll post tomorrow...

Sunset from Fountain Park

The Sturgeon Moon rises in August and I hoped to catch it on this night from a vantage point at Fountain Park.  As I waited, I tried to find a composition that would include the lighthouse and Little Harbor.  I was pleased to find this angle and even more so when a pair of kayakers paddled into the foreground.  The moon ended up rising a bit early so that it's color lacked the vibrant yellow that came with the moonrise the next night.  I was happy with the way this sunset view turned out.

The Brick Oil House at Chandler Hovey Park

Yesterday's Reflection shot was taken while my older camera was shooting a time lapse movie of the sun setting over the harbor.  While waiting for it to finish, I wandered around Chandler Hovey park looking for compositions and angles that I hadn't yet shot.  I noticed the sun setting over the brick oil house that used to power Marblehead Light and decided to close down the aperture and turn the bright sun into a sunstar.  Having the tree there helped add to the composition as did the full harbor.

Reflections on a Year

Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of this website.  What started as a desire to learn more about my new hometown by shooting photos every Wednesday, has turned into an incredible experience.  In this past year, I have published 94 posts of images of this town.  Over 200 people have 'liked' the Wednesdays in Marblehead Facebook page.  Fifty people signed up to receive regular email updates.  The home page has been viewed over 1200 times (at least since I installed the plugin to keep count).   Meanwhile, I have become a member of the Marblehead Arts Association.  I've [...]

The Lifeguard Chair at Sunset

This weekend I noticed that the normally white lifeguard chairs at Devereux beach had been painted red with an added Red Cross behind them.  I made a note to come back and shoot them and was fortunate to have time on Saturday night to do so.  Even better were the colors of sunset that added a beautiful pink hue to the clouds over the ocean.  I have a number of favorite shots from this night and will be posting more this week. I am now on Google+ so, if you are on there as well, please add me to one [...]
