Pink Sunset and Fog over Marblehead Harbor

Back to the incredible sunset that took place on Wednesday, July 16.  I've share two images from that night so far but, between the fog over Marblehead Harbor and the spectacular colors that formed at sunset and for the 45 minutes that followed, I have 10 more images yet to share from this evening. I previously shared an image including Abbot Hall and one focused on the cranes at the end of the pier from which I was shooting.  This was the view looking out toward Marblehead Light.  At this point, the colors in the sky had shifted from blue [...]

Watching the Moon Rise from Fort Sewall

By popular demand - an image of the full moon rise from Fort Sewall captured on July 11, 2014.  When I go out to shoot, I will often return with several images that I want to share.  Such was the case with the full moon rise of July 11-12.  On that first night, I had hoped for a new composition of the moon rising over Chandler Hovey Park as seen from Fort Sewall and achieved that when I used the leaves of the great tree at the Fort to frame this shot. However, moments later, the Glover's Regiment began their [...]

The Cranes at Sunset overlooking Marblehead Harbor

You know you are dealing with an incredible sunset when a pair of cranes grab your attention and become the focal point of an image.  I had never imagined taking a picture of the two cranes that stand at the end of this pier off Foster Street but then I never saw light as incredible as on this Wednesday evening. With the low-lying fog bank on Marblehead Harbor and the explosion of colors overhead, I kept moving from one spot to the next trying to capture the incredible light before me.  As I moved to cross from one side to [...]

Red Sky at Night and Fog in Marblehead Harbor

On Wednesday, July 15, Marblehead was pummeled by rain that seemed to fall in sheets at times.  The humidity of the system combined with the cold water temperatures to form fog in the morning and night for several days.  As the system moved away in early evening, I decided to head out hoping for that fog and the strong sunsets that usually follow a good storm. As I made my way across the causeway, I found thick fog had indeed arrived and made it difficult to see to the next lamp post as I drove.  I continued to Foster Street [...]

Sailing Out of Marblehead Harbor

On Sunday, July 13th my family was invited by friends on a boat ride out to Halfway Rock.  The sky was a clear blue on our way out of Marblehead Harbor but we were treated to slowly building clouds on our return. As we approached the mouth of the harbor, a sailboat came close crossing between Marblehead Light and the newly decorated scaffolding over Abbot Hall.  I captured this image as the sailboat glided into a perfect position in my composition. Afterwards, I tried to bring out the red of the scaffolding and the large M recently added to it.  [...]

Long Exposure – Marblehead Harbor Reflecting Colors of Sunset

For a while, I would share long exposure images on Tuesdays.  That theme hasn't been as active as in months past but, at the end of June, I had a chance to capture a long exposure image at sunset and I thought I would share it today. This was at the tail end of an incredibly vibrant sunset that took place over 45 minutes and had me driving to three different locations.  I had thought the show was finished and was driving toward the causeway when I looked to my right and saw this scene.  I quickly turned around, parked, [...]

Supermoon Rises over Marblehead Light

Since the 'true' supermoon over 2011, it seems that each year we have more and more appearances of the so-called supermoon.  The term originally was meant for the full moon which was at its closest proximity to the earth in nearly two decades and thus would appear 17% larger.  The supermoons now are labels added to the closest proximity of the moon to the Earth for a given year.  In 2014, we are due to have three such supermoons. With that being said, I am always up for capturing an image of a full moon over Marblehead (supermoon or not).  [...]

From the Rooftops – Corinthian Yacht Club and Marblehead Harbor

Back to the top of Marblehead Light from July 2nd for this From the Rooftops Thursday image.  I had previously shared an image including the shadows cast by Marblehead Light but, before focusing on that composition, I had been overwhelmed by the expansive view of Marblehead Harbor. The only tricky part was deciding whether to incorporate Abbot Hall with its scaffolding and red drape.  For this image, I decided to focus on Marblehead Neck and the Corinthian Yacht Club with the beautiful view of a full Marblehead Harbor.  I was fortunate to have some clouds to work with and I [...]

Casting Shadows at Marblehead Light

From the Rooftops Thursday is back with a vengeance after yesterday's morning climb to the top of Marblehead Light! For the past four years, I have been trying to find a way to the top of our lighthouse but the timing never seemed to work out.  Twice a year, the Rotary Club and volunteers string red, white and blue lights from the top of the lighthouse and I had hoped to join them but work kept getting in the way.  And so, when I received a text message from Jack at All Marblehead to set up a time for hanging [...]

Summer in Marblehead – 3 – Purple Light from Parker Lane

Another image from Saturday's spectacular sunset over Marblehead harbor.  I had started off shooting at the Pleon Yacht Club but moved to Parker Land after the sun dipped below the horizon. On Monday, I shared the incredible pinks that filled the sky shortly afterwards. It wasn't long before the pinks gave way to the purple colors you see here.  I decided to keep the skyline as silhouette to minimize the scaffolding around Abbot Hall tower.  Between the amazing sunsets and warm days, there really is nothing quite like Summer in Marblehead.
