Chasing the Light – One Sunset, Five Unique Photos

This will be a bit of a longer post to recap this great Summer sunset.  I also want to point out that there will not be any posts for the next few days as I am driving up to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont to try and capture the incredible color up there. Today, I wanted to share the last image from a spectacular sunset that took place back in mid-August and explain some of my thought process at the time.  To refresh your memory, for a stretch of 3-4 nights in August, we had been getting these incredible deep [...]

A Balcony View of Marblehead Harbor

As I mentioned in yesterday's From the Rooftops image, this was one of the first shots I took in the rooftop series and I had in mind the shot of the houses on Lee Street with Abbot Hall poking up from behind them.  However, when I was welcomed to this home and shown the balcony view, I knew I had to spend a few minutes capturing the incredible view before me.  I can't imagine there are too many spots in town like this one where you can sit and take in the sites and sounds of the harbor as the [...]

Marblehead Harbor Bathed in a Red Sunset

For the past two Wednesdays, I have been sharing photos from a single location as an incredible Summer sunset unfolded before me.  You can catch up on the first [LINK] and second [LINK] by clicking the links.  This was the end of the show.  The colors that night had gone from the yellow glow as the sun set below the horizon to pinks then deep purples and finally this amazing red.  As I mentioned before, this shoot was in start contrast to the 'chasing the light' one I had done previously in that I just moved a few feet in [...]

Purple Streaks of Sunset

As I mentioned in last Wednesday's post [LINK] I went out on August 21st under lackluster appearing conditions hoping against hope for a decent sunset.  I setup at the pier where the Pleon Yacht club resides and looked on as the clouds began to take shape and break into wisps from the gray mass they had formed earlier that evening.  I began by shooting toward the lighthouse.  After getting the shot I posted last week full of pinks, I turned and saw this... The streaks in the sky were incredible and seemed to be emanating from this house on the [...]

Sun Rays over Marblehead Skyline

On Saturday, a series of storms barreled through New England.  As they passed, I noticed that the clouds overhead seemed to fly by and I decided to head out for some long exposure shots.  I drove across the causeway and then stopped at Castle Rock to watch the crashing waves for a while.  I then headed to Chandler Hovey park in hopes of getting the clouds drifting over the lighthouse. Before I could shoot a long exposure however, I noticed this scene before me and couldn't pass up the opportunity.  Every few minutes, a break in the clouds would lead [...]

Another Epic Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

I've been fortunate to witness and capture some truly astonishing sunsets this Summer.  That being said, the epic sunset I witnessed on August 21st, might trump them all.  I had witnessed some incredible light shows for several nights leading up to this one but work and kids kept me from running out each night with the camera and tripod.  On this night, I had decided to go out no matter the conditions...and then almost changed my mind when the wispy clouds that had covered the harbor left and were replaced by a heavy grey one. I decided that I would at least [...]

Blue Moon over Marblehead Harbor

I arrived home from work last night and my 6 year old son starts telling me about 'moon jellyfish' that he saw while tide pooling at camp today.  He can't stop describing them and is almost beside himself at how amazing it was to hold one.  The more he talked, the more I thought it worth heading out to see them.  I decided to postpone my dinner and got them in the car to head back to Front Street beach where he had been earlier in the day.  We got to Front Street at low tide and scampered around the [...]

Sunrise over Doliber Cove

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, my 6 1/2 year old son woke me up before the sun rose and I decided to make the most of the situation by heading to Grace Oliver beach.  After shooting the wider view including the beach, I zoomed in closer for this view.  In it, you can just make out the edge of Brown's Island and one of my favorite trees at the edge of Crowninshield Road.  The boats in the cove and the swim line add to the scene.  The sun's early light reflects beautifully off the clouds overhead.  Not a bad [...]

The Sun Rises over Grace Oliver Beach

On a recent Sunday morning, I was awakened at 4:30am by a certain 6 1/2 year old resident of our household.  I was upset at the early wake up but, after getting him back in bed, took a look outside and at weather apps to try to decide if it was worth getting up and out of the house for a sunrise shoot.  The weather looked iffy but I decided to give it a shot.  After checking the expected location of the sunrise, I headed out to Grace Oliver beach. I started off photographing the dawn at Little Harbor but [...]

Chasing the Light 5 – Abbot and the Boats under a Pink Sky

This is the last image in our Chasing the Light series.  After the light hit its peak, I chose to zoom in from yesterday's wide view and try to compose an image with Abbot Hall and the boats in the harbor while maximizing the light reflected in the water.  As opposed to the image taken prior to this where the long shutter speed served to calm the water, I chose to keep the subtle ripples here to add texture to the scene. If you made it through this series (and you can see all five images in a row by [...]
