In a Fog on Washington Street

Best of Show - Marblehead Festival of Arts 2013 As a photographer I've come to really love "bad" weather. It was for this reason that I woke up without an alarm on three successive mornings during the recent arctic blast and why a smile crept on my face as the warmup and light rain after blizzard combined to make for some dense fog on Monday night.  As soon as I got home from work, a meeting at a local hospital and reading a book with my son, I headed out in hopes of capturing the wonderful mood that fog adds [...]

Foliage in the Fog at Seaside Park

Fall's colors have finally arrived in town and I have been trying to capture the great displays that are occurring throughout the town.  I started shooting on Wednesday and had some solid photos after an afternoon wandering throughout Old Town and beyond.  On Saturday morning, however, I was pleased to see some fog roll in and I instantly decided to shoot the one tree that had eluded me in the prior effort. This tree at Seaside park was in the wrong light when I had visited it on Wednesday but the fog brought an extra dimension to this scene that [...]

Slow Start to Race Week

I was hoping to catch a few sailboats racing by the lighthouse today but, as I drove across the causeway, I noted a thick fog had settled in the harbor.  I took a few photos of the fog as I made my way up to Chandler Hovey Park and, when I arrived, noticed that the boats were all waiting. Waiting for the wind, the fog to clear....just waiting. I took this image in the midst of some particularly dense fog.  The only way to tell it's in color is by the red on the nearby sail.  I actually liked the [...]

The Lone Tree at Fort Sewall

As I mentioned in Monday's post, this week was going to feature a fair amount of fog.  This image came from the start of the night - I had just set up my tripod for the supermoon shot when the fog rolled in fast and thick.  I quickly changed lenses and took advantage of the setting light to shoot this magnificent tree looking lonely without a harbor to accompany it. The beauty of fog is that it isolates a subject.  while normally this composition would include distant houses, rocks and a harbor filled with boats, here the tree stands alone. [...]

The Grassy Hill at Fort Sewall

May 5th proved to be a very productive day.  As I wrote on the supermoon image and the recent 'two roads' one, a blanket of fog descended on me as I set up for a shot at Fort Sewall that evening.  When it became clear that the fog would not clear, I set about looking for images that wouldn't otherwise be available to me in clearer conditions. The telescope you see stands across the harbor from the lighthouse.  On a clear day, there is no way to not see the iconic structure and, therefore, the poor scope pales in comparison [...]

The Road Less Traveled

Last weekend, I had set out for Fort Sewall in order to shoot the rise of the supermoon.  Rather than the expected view, I ended up with a thick fog bank to contend with.  I stood there for a while with a few others wondering if the fog would lift in town.  When it only seemed to worsen, I shrugged it off and decided to make the most of what I was given. I walked around Fort Sewall looking for photos that could only be taken in the fog.  As I turned from the overlook after shooting Gerry Island, I [...]

Foggy Sunset over Devereux Beach

November 27th was a special night as far as photography is concerned.  It was the night that I captured a couple walking in the fog on the causeway - which has been one of my favorite (and most popular) images on the site*.  As I headed out that evening aware of the coming fog, I first stopped at Devereux beach where the sunset was unfolding.  I had never witnessed a foggy sunset before and the colors were truly remarkable.  Enjoy this calm scene. *I have the photo of the lampposts in the fog printed (very) large and ready to show [...]

Gingerbread Lane in the Fog

We've had a fair amount of fog in the past few months and I've been scouting out locations to capture while in the thick of it.  As I drove around one foggy morning, I noticed the rocky wall on Gingerbread lane.  The fog had started to lift and I quickly parked and set up to capture the moody atmosphere before me.  I really liked the green path in the middle of the road and the fallen leaves setting the scene.

Lamp posts on the causeway

I had to include one more photo from Sunday's photo shoot of fog over the causeway.  While yesterday's image was the one that brought a smile to my face and gave my creativity a big push, this was the image I had envisioned.  For this shot, I waited patiently for cars and pedestrians to pass and tried to keep the photo minimalistic by focusing on the line of lamp posts fading in the distance with the arc of light neatly shown against the thick fog. Don't forget about the Annual Christmas Walk.  I'll be at the Bus Stop on Saturday, [...]

A Foggy Night on the Causeway – Best of Show

Best of Show - Marblehead Festival of Arts 2012 Every once in a while, an opportunity comes along that reignites my creativity and makes me incredibly grateful for having started this photographic project...last night was just such a night.  The weather called for gathering clouds at sunset so I had scratched a planned photoshoot off the night's plans.  When I went out at 4 however, the air felt very humid and I wondered if we might be treated to a foggy night.  I grabbed my camera and tripod and drove down to the causeway to get a better view of [...]
