Calm Morning – Marblehead Harbor in the Blue Hour

On Saturday, February 1st, I woke early so I could drop off my son at the YMCA snowboarding/skiing trip to Nashoba Valley.  Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I had thrown my camera bag and tripod in the car and, after dropping him off at 6:45am, drove in search of good light. I watched the clouds as I drove and decided to shoot from the overlook at the end of Chestnut Street where it meets Cliff Street but the view wasn't quite what I had in mind.  I quickly jumped back in the car and drove [...]

A View of Boston from Marblehead Neck

This view really never gets old.  Though I have photographed it previously under different conditions (most recently with turquoise waters - LINK), I couldn't help but pull over on Ocean Avenue on Marblehead Neck when the clouds began to reflect the light of sunset on this mid-August night.  The small beach offered just enough of a foreground element to ground the scene and instruct the viewer that this view of Boston was from Marblehead Neck.

Fall Colors on Marblehead Neck

October brought with it cool nights and changing colors to the trees in Marblehead.  I would go out periodically looking for new vantage points from which to capture those beautiful Fall colors.  On this early October night, I had decided to check some spots on Marblehead Neck.  As I drove across the causeway, I noticed this scene flash by and decided to pull over to capture it. While the colors in the trees weren't quite at peak, I was worried some coming storms might lead to a very quick and abrupt leaf loss.  The relatively calm waters helped me capture [...]

Dawn of a New Year of Wednesdays in Marblehead

Yesterday, I shared a frenetic slideshow showcasing every one of the 726 images shared in the first three years of Wednesdays in Marblehead.  I was trying to decide how best to start Year 4 and went through the archive until I found this image from mid-January of a beautiful dawn captured from Front Street. This was one of many failed attempts to capture sea smoke over the last Winter but, on this particular morning, I was rewarded for my efforts with great clouds above the horizon that encircled Marblehead Neck as well as wispy clouds higher up in the sky [...]

A 600 Million Year Old View – Castle Rock

Though I've often visited (and photographed) the area around Castle Rock, I have very few images focused on the large rock itself.  On Sunday, I noted nice clouds forming during the afternoon and decided to brave the heat and humidity for a photoshoot.  The outing took me to Devereux Beach and then to various points around the neck.  I ended at Castle Rock and started there with some compositions of the beach.  I then turned and focused on this rock face and included the great clouds above and sailboats in the distance. On returning home, I decided to try to [...]

Castle Rock seen from Sky High

One of the most rewarding result of starting Wednesdays in Marblehead has been the incredible people whom I have met and who have invited me into their homes.  Such was the case at 'Sky High' which I had happened to photograph recently from atop Castle Rock when on an outing driven by the turquoise waters that had suddenly appeared.  The image turned into a canvas order and the delivery of the print turned into an hour long conversation and tour of this amazing house and its residents. It wasn't one week later when I called the owners during a sunset [...]

Tendrils on the Neck and Tinker’s Island in Storm Light

On Friday, the grey skies that had dominated for days on end finally threatened to break.  As I drove home after work, I noted some dramatic skies with amazing cloud formations taking shape and decided to head out as soon as I could.  I stopped home long enough to grab my camera and tripod and then made my way out to Marblehead Neck.  I stopped at a number of spots along the way and will share those in the days to come.  One of my final destinations was Castle Rock where I took this view after the more classic one [...]

Birthday Sunrise over Marblehead Neck

Last Tuesday, I celebrated my birthday and awoke before the alarm clock at 5:30am.  I had previously scouted the location and time of the sunrise as it had occurred to me I had never tried to shoot a sunrise on my birthday.  Having woken up early enough and with some time until I had to be at work, I quickly got dressed and headed out the door.  I had two possible locations in mind but decided on the Devereux Beach one when I saw how the light was developing.  I photographed the dawn as light began to grow at the [...]

Worm Moon Rises Over Marblehead Neck

On the same night that I captured Monday's image of the frozen harbor at sunset, I also managed this image of the full Worm moon rising over Marblehead Neck.  The original plan was to shoot this moon as it rose over the lighthouse.  I arrived at the location I had scouted with too much time to spare so I drove across the causeway and photographed the ice along the harbor as the sun set.  Given the clouds on the mainland side, I had little hope for the moon rise.  As I packed up and drove back across the causeway however, [...]

Long Exposure – Rocks in a Milky Harbor

Tuesday means another Long Exposure image.  This one comes from last Wednesday morning on an ill-fated attempt to shoot sea smoke.  Despite the 10 F temps, the harbor was eerily clear when I arrived at dawn to photograph this scene.  Rather than giving up, I decided to wait til sunrise and see what the clouds and light might offer.  As it turns out, the image came out great and I ended up sharing it last week. Before the sun rose, however, there was just enough light to play with some long exposures.  This was still the blue hour and I [...]
