Marblehead Neck

Cold Dawn over Marblehead Neck

Yesterday, January 23rd, was slated to be our first near-zero degree day in a while.  With the recent moderate weather and ocean temps in the 40's, I figured I had a good shot at capturing some sea smoke.  With that in mind, I woke up early on Wednesday and drove to a few spots.  Unfortunately, Redd's Pond and Little Harbor didn't have anything in the way of smoke.  I crossed my fingers and made my way to Front Street hoping for better luck.  For whatever reason, the water was smooth and smoke-free.  I sat there in the car trying to [...]

Tinkers Island off Marblehead Neck

In mid-August, my son and I were invited out for an impromptu fishing excursion off the rocks on Marblehead Neck.  I had never been to this section of the neck previously (seeing as there are no public ways accessible) and was glad I had thought to bring my camera.  As the boys scampered on the rocks looking for a fishing spot (a losing effort at dead low tide), I sought out compositions with which to frame the distant view of Tinker's Island.  I settled on this as my favorite with the rock formations in the foreground and the great expansive clouds above. [...]

Sun Rays over Marblehead Neck

On the first Wednesday in August, I remember the sky seemed to hold promise for a solid sunset and prompted me to chase the light onto the Neck.  As I crossed over the causeway and checked my rearview mirror, I saw these great sun rays pour down over Devereux beach.  I pulled over on Ocean Avenue at the private beach and quickly shot the scene from the sidewalk.  I love the fleeting nature of these rays (which were gone within 5 minutes of my grabbing the camera) and the way they add drama to an otherwise calm scene.  You can [...]

The Coastline of the Neck

One more image from the recent exploration of a house at 405 Ocean Avenue.  After shooting the tea house, I wandered down to a patio built out of/onto the rocky coastline.  I managed to walk out onto a jutting cliff and saw this incredible view before me.  The rocky coast, the Atlantic ocean and waves, the homes on the neck, a lone flagpole and even Marblehead Rock all stood before me.  I just had to time this one right to capture some water cascading off the nearby rocks to add a bit more tension to the scene.  It helped that [...]

Inside the Lipton Tea House

I posted the view of the tea house yesterday and hinted at today's image.  When I arrived at 405 Ocean Avenue, I made a bee line for this spot and took my time to explore the space inside the tea house.  The angles and reflections were incredible and I wanted to focus on the structure of the house and offer the viewer a sense of walking in on a warm Summer day to sit, relax and enjoy the sounds and views of the ocean outside. For those interested, I should mention that this was not the first image captured when [...]

The Tea House on the Neck

I first learned of the tea house that sits perched over the Atlantic ocean by chance when happening on a listing for the property on which it resides - 405 Ocean Avenue.  Since that moment over one year ago, I have tried to find an opportunity to photograph the unique spot.  As luck would have it, the owner of the home contacted me a few weeks ago and we set a date for a visit.  Last Wednesday, I drove up the Neck, parked in front of the house, and walked around back.  What greeted me was the view you see [...]

From the Rooftops – Flying over the Neck

I thought I had reached the conclusion of my Rooftop series this week.  I had scoured old images but did not see any I liked and did not have any shoots lined up.  I was pretty upset about having to put an end to this unique view of our town when Aviv Hod called me.  For those who may not know him, Aviv is a financial advisor.  We met at Shirat Hayam and I came to find out that he was an avid pilot.  As it was Wednesday and my only duties were to stain a desk for my son, [...]

Flowers on the Neck

We had a run of perfect weather in mid April and I ventured out one day to explore flowers on the Neck.  As I drove down Foster Street, I noticed this beautiful house and the flowers that had sprung to life near the road.  I carefully setup to capture the flowers under a bring Spring sun with the house forming a great backdrop.  If you stare at this one long enough, you can just about feel that warm sun on your skin and smell the crisp Spring air.

Long Exposure – A dramatic view of a pier on the Neck

A dramatic image on this Long Exposure Tuesday.  Back in January, I began my exploration of the piers that line the Neck and jut out into the harbor.  With a long exposure, still objects are key and so my eye was looking for appropriate subjects as I wandered down to the beach along the Neck.  I had explored a few compositions with this particular pier but it wasn't until I stepped back and included its full length that I felt I had the right one to balance the scene. With the composition set, I simply had to wait...and wait...for the [...]

The Pink Moon rises over Marblehead Neck

Friday promised a full Pink moon and absolutely perfect conditions for shooting it.  Only problem was that the rise coincided with the first night of Passover.  I somehow convinced my visiting parents to move the Seder up an hour and we were finished eating by 7pm.  I quickly went to the car to 'pick up some coffee' and headed to Devereux beach.  I had wanted to shoot a full moon rising over the houses on the Neck for a while and this was as good a chance as any.  I set up and waited in anticipation... I was not disappointed [...]
