So Long Irene

It looks like Hurricane Irene is making her way past with a bit of wind left over but, thankfully, very little damage reported so far. I ventured out after the rains let up around noon looking for more signs of Irene's power along the coast. Sunset from Fountain Park

The Sturgeon Moon rises in August and I hoped to catch it on this night from a vantage point at Fountain Park. As I waited, I tried to find a composition that would include the lighthouse and Little Harbor. I was pleased to find this angle and even more so when a pair of kayakers paddled into the foreground. The moon ended up rising a bit early so that it's color lacked the vibrant yellow that came with the moonrise the next night. I was happy with the way this sunset view turned out.

The Fisherman at Castle Rock

After capturing the rainbow from Chandler Hovey, the sky turned grey and I decided to head home. On a whim, I took a detour by Castle Rock thinking the recent storm might lend itself to some crashing waves. I was pleased to see that it did and surprised to find someone trying to fish in the crashing surf. I shot this image using a 1/2 second exposure to subdue the motion of the waves and was pleased to see that the fisherman hadn't moved in that time.

The Rocks at Chandler Hovey Park

Another photo while waiting for a recent time lapse to finish. While exploring the coast and the crevices that mark it, I noticed the golden light that was falling on these rocks. By chance, a sailboat was positioned at just the right spot to lead the eye from the waters below up to the top of the image. The sails caught the setting light and I knew I had a perfect Summer photo of Marblehead.

Marblehead from the Water

This is the last shot from our brief sail out of the Marblehead harbor. I looked back after seeing the boats headed to their races and saw the town laid out in front of me. I managed to get the entirety of the Neck with its lighthouse, the harbor filled with boats, and the mainland with Abbot standing tall. I like this perspective of our town on a warm Summer day.

Wednesday Night is for…Racing

After 36 years, Wednesday Evening Races have cemented themselves as a staple of summer in Marblehead. From mid-May to late-September, boats of various classes compete in races held just outside the harbor. We were fortunate to be on the water as the groups headed toward the start line. I caught this set of boats in open water. Below you can see another group crossing in front of the lighthouse at Chandler Hovey park. Floating

Continuing on the sailing trip, we left the safety of the Marblehead harbor and ventured out in search of wind (there wasn't any) and happened upon this vessel. The light on the subtle waves was making for some incredible designs and I sought to shoot an abstract of the water leading to the single sailboat along the island.

Out for a Sail

Last Wednesday, we were invited out for an evening sail by some good friends. While I spent half the time shooting my wife, kids and surrogate parents/grandparents on the boat, I didn't miss the chance to photograph our town from the water. After all, this is a sailing town! The Lifeguard Chair on Devereux Beach – Causeway and beyond

The Lifeguard Chair – Sunstar and Volleyball net

Here is another shot from Saturday night's study of the newly painted lifeguard chairs. This was the only shot I had planned for the outing. I had originally hoped for a sunrise sunstar but realized the angles were never going to work. Instead I managed to capture the sun setting against the leg of the lifeguard chair while the volleyball net stands ready and Lime Rickey's does a brisk Summer business.
