Devereux Beach in the Fog

This seemed an appropriate image for the upcoming Labor Day weekend.  Some time after capturing yesterday's image of fog, light and shadows at Old Burial Hill, I had wondered down to Devereux Beach to see if the fog offered interesting vantage points near the ocean.  I found that the ocean seemed to disappear only a few feet from shore into that grey expanse and decided to set up a straight shot to accentuate the effect of the familiar beach in the fog. I waited for a wave to come ashore and captured this simple image.  There was an odd glow [...]

From the Lighthouse – Boats Passing in the Ocean

Back to the top of Marblehead Light for this From the Rooftops Thursday view.  I shared a few images overlooking Marblehead Harbor from this unique vantage point but had also tried to find other compositions while standing at the highest point in Marblehead. This view of the tip of Chandler Hovey Park seemed to be missing something with the large expanse of ocean but then two boats passed  before me and I captured the scene with a much-needed element.

Incredible Sunrise Reflecting on the Ocean

If there's one thing I've learned after five years and over 900 images taken of Marblehead, it is to never pass up an unintentional morning wake up.  And so it was that on Wednesday, April 23rd, when I woke for no good reason at 5:30am, I promptly got out of bed and checked the morning sky and weather forecast.  The latter called for mostly cloudy/overcast conditions and I worried that might block any chance of seeing the sunrise.  However, a quick look out the window suggested there might be a break at the horizon and I headed out the door [...]

Fire in the Sky over Devereux Beach

On January 15, a truly breathtaking sunset took shape over the Atlantic ocean and Devereux Beach.  As the sun dropped below the horizon, the sky built up with color and the clouds served to reflect and accentuate the scene making it appear as though there was a fire in the sky. I have shared a wider view of this scene including the causeway and lampposts but had to share this one as well for its powerful colors.

Waves Coming Ashore at Mooring Road

I developed a bit of an obsession with the pier at Mooring Road in 2011.  I had first discovered the pier in April 2011 and this image is one of the first I captured on that day.  I would return in the early Winter to explore the pier jutting out from the road in one of my favorite long exposure images later that year. As we approach three years since capturing this images of waves coming ashore as seen from the pier at Mooring Road, I thought it was a great opportunity to finally share the shot. Click below for all [...]

Frozen Moment at Castle Rock (photo and video)

Today's image comes from the dawn/sunrise photoshoot at Castle Rock on February 19th.  I've shared a few other images from this outing but hadn't yet worked on this image with a composition aimed at including the waves coming to shore and reflecting the colors of dawn on this cold morning. Immediately before capturing this image, I had switched the camera to movie mode and recorded 40 seconds of the sounds and feel of watching the dawn from Castle Rock.  Click below to watch the video for yourself and see how the final photo and video compare.

Impossibly Beautiful – Fences in the Snow and the Ocean Beyond

Continuing with this week's theme of images captured on the morning of Thursday, February 6 after 10-12 inches of snow fell on Marblehead, we come to this impossibly beautiful scene. After capturing the image at Fort Sewall and then the tree lined street of Glendale Road, I noticed the clouds were lighting up and decided to head to a nearby favorite vantage point. I arrived at Bass Rock Lane to find much of the lane that extends to the Atlantic ocean beyond covered with unmarked snow. I hated to disturb the snow and so I set up a vertical shot [...]

Flying through the Sea Smoke

Back to the morning of January 4th and the awesome experience of capturing sea smoke rising off the Atlantic Ocean from Devereux Beach.  I had captured the sunrise over Tinker's Island at this point but the increasing angle of sunlight was backlighting the sea smoke and making for an even more impressive display. I tried to time the shots to the waves coming to shore and loved this particular image for the lobster trap encircled by water and the sea gulls that can be seen flying through the sea smoke. As incredible cold as it was that morning, it was [...]

Naugus Head from the Water

I shared an image last Friday taken from the waters around Marblehead while cruising on a friend's boat.  This image of Naugus Head was captured shortly after we left the mooring in Salem Harbor. As we headed out, the sun was starting to dip lower in the sky and was producing some great warm light on Marblehead as we passed near the shore.  The view from the water offered me vantage points I had never experienced before and, when we reached Naugus Head, the combination of warm light, calm waters and the houses peeking out from the canopy of trees [...]

Capturing the Sunset and Boston Skyline

At the end of November, I left the house before sunset in hopes of capturing some nice evening light.  In the hour of shooting, I would come away with eight images to share.  And yet, this is the first one I have posted to the site. I started off capturing some great pink/purple clouds over the harbor and then crossed the causeway as the sun was setting to see if the light might be right for an image from the small (unnamed) park and bench at the start of Marblehead Neck.  Before I made it to the park though, I [...]
