Lone Sailboat in the Ocean

This image seemed like a nice way to end the week.  I took this shot on July 16, 2013 while out with a friend on a cruise in the waters around Marblehead.  The way the sun light hit this lone sailboat in the ocean and reflected off its sails instantly captured my attention.  The great texture in the calm waters hit me next and I decided to go with a vertical orientation for the image to highlight both. Enjoy the weekend.

Last Night’s Sunset – Devereux Beach, Marblehead, MA

I had another post in mind for today but then this happened and I just couldn't wait to share it. Yesterday was a good day.  It began with having the cast taken off my left foot where I had broken a small bone back on December 7.  The feeling of having that weight lifted (literally) was tempered as soon as I stepped on the foot and realized I now had a long way to go in getting up to speed with walking.  As it happened, I had a physical therapy appointment at the JCC a few hours later that went [...]

After the Storm – Lovis Cove at High Tide

On Friday, January 3rd, the storm that dropped almost 2 feet of snow and brought with it arctic temperatures had finally departed from Marblehead.  As high tide approached, the remnants of the storm's power could be seen in the astronomically high water levels and I drove around town trying to capture the feel of the storm's cold and the high tide. As I came down Front Street, I found the way to Fort Beach closed off due to flooding but saw this scene before me at Lovis Cove.  I have shot from Lovis Cove on a few occasions and actually [...]

Sea Smoke at Sunrise – Tinker’s Island and the Red Glow of Dawn

I just couldn't wait to share this image until Monday so here is a rare Sunday shot showcasing an incredible moment capturing sea smoke off Devereux Beach as the sun rose behind Tinker's Island. After the storm blew through and left us with almost two feet of snow, an arctic air mass was due to envelope Marblehead and with the near zero degree temperatures came the chance of seeing sea smoke.  I had only seen sea smoke on a few occasions since moving to Marblehead and have never missed a chance to go out and capture the fleeting phenomenon.  On [...]

New Years Starts with a Storm

Just three days into 2014 and Marblehead got walloped with almost two feet of snow to go along with truly arctic conditions.  Once the snow died down on Friday, I decided to head out and try to capture the storm during the noon high tide. I started off on Ocean Avenue intending to shoot the causeway up close but found 12" of ocean water in the middle of the street and no way to safely cross it.  I decided to go with plan B which was climbing to the rocks at Goldthwait beach.  While the walk wasn't terrible (though I'm [...]

Snow in Marblehead – Lobster Traps at Sunset

One last image of snow for this week and one more from the Blizzard of 2013 (aka Nemo).  When all was said and done, Nemo had left us with over 2 feet of snow to dig out of.  However, one of the small rewards of these massive storms is that you are almost guaranteed a beautiful sunset when they finally depart.  Such was the case with this nor'easter and I headed across the causeway and onto Ocean Avenue to capture this view of incredible color as the storm ended. As you can see from the waves in the Atlantic and [...]

A View of Boston from Marblehead Neck

This view really never gets old.  Though I have photographed it previously under different conditions (most recently with turquoise waters - LINK), I couldn't help but pull over on Ocean Avenue on Marblehead Neck when the clouds began to reflect the light of sunset on this mid-August night.  The small beach offered just enough of a foreground element to ground the scene and instruct the viewer that this view of Boston was from Marblehead Neck.

All Along the Causeway

I shared an image of the sunset over Marblehead Harbor on Tuesday that came from a shoot on August 19th.  This image was taken about an hour earlier and it seemed like a good time to share it as well. I've taken very few images from the small park that stands on the Marblehead Neck side of the causeway.  It is a great spot with views of the ocean and Boston (on a clear day) and has nice benches that seem to beg visitors to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.  While there, I noticed the interesting lines that [...]

Rays of Light over Goldthwait Beach

Continuing with the great light featured this week, this is a shot from the afternoon of Sept 13th.  Storms seem to be missing us to the north and south on this particular day and I headed out in hopes of capturing the storms from a distance.  I started off at Devereux Beach where I shot under the cover of the picnic table structure. The clouds kept forming and braking and, at this point, broke at just the right spot to let in the rays of light from the sun.  You can just make out a spot of blue sky above [...]
