Black Dog in Little Harbor

On Monday, July 21, dense fog approached Marblehead's shores and I decided to head out to capture a few scenes I had in mind.  Rather than heading straight to Marblehead Harbor, I took West Shore Drive to Beacon Street and Grace Oliver Beach.  I took a few photos there with Brown's Island barely visible through the gathering fog and then walked along Beacon Street to Harding Lane.  There, I wandered down for a better view of Brown's Island and found Sadie. Sadie was jumping into the waters of Little Harbor after rocks being thrown by her owners.  She would pine [...]

Glover’s Regiment Marching Under the Full Moon

Every Summer, Glover's Regiment has an encampment at Fort Sewall with reenactments of battles between the Loyalists/Red Coats and the Regiment.  It so happened that this year's encampment would take place during the Full Buck Moon.  I had a few ideas in mind and so I headed out to Fort Sewall on Friday night with my family to watch a piece of Marblehead history and hoped for good conditions. The full moon rose on a beautiful warm Summer night and the timing of the rise in relation to sunset meant there were plenty of pinks and purples in the sky [...]

Ready for Summer – Kayaking past Naugus Head

I'm done.  This is the longest, coldest winter I ever care to experience and it shows no signs of letting go yet.  I shared images of snow on Monday and Tuesday so I thought it was time to bring out a warm image today. This was taken on July 16th when a good friend invited me onto his boat for a ride around the waters of Marblehead.  We started out in Salem harbor and I noticed this kayaker as we motored by the shore and approached Naugus Head.  The sun had started to descend in the sky at this hour [...]

Running in the Fog at Fort Sewall

We had some incredible fog on the morning of September 11, 2013.  I had started off capturing Marblehead Harbor as the sun burned through the fog.  As the sun rose in the sky, the color of the sky took on a great orange hue.  I ended up chasing that light all the way to Front Street and Fort Beach.  When all was said and done, I had over 30 images with various compositions and light to share. It's no surprise then that this image has taken a while to see the light of day.  As you can see the orange [...]

Capturing the Sunset and Boston Skyline

At the end of November, I left the house before sunset in hopes of capturing some nice evening light.  In the hour of shooting, I would come away with eight images to share.  And yet, this is the first one I have posted to the site. I started off capturing some great pink/purple clouds over the harbor and then crossed the causeway as the sun was setting to see if the light might be right for an image from the small (unnamed) park and bench at the start of Marblehead Neck.  Before I made it to the park though, I [...]

Marblehead Lighthouse in Black and White

I have a LOT of image of Marblehead Lighthouse.  This lighthouse has been an element in more than 100 images shared on this site and seems to be either loved or hated by those who gaze upon it.  The lighthouse definitely has a unique shape and many disparage it for not fitting with other New England lighthouses.  Personally, I've grown to love its uniqueness and the lines formed by its steel frame. As I was going through my archive of images waiting to be posted to the site, I found this image taken on June 3, 2012.  I remember chasing [...]

Pickup Hockey Game at Redd’s Pond

Is there a more classic New England scene than a pickup hockey game on a frozen pond?  And if that happens to be Redd's Pond with a beautiful house abutting it and great light and clouds are around...timeless. I captured this image on New Year's Day and shared an iPhone version on my Facebook page shortly after.  While that image was well received, I decided to go with a black and white version of a different shot from the 'real' camera to share today.  The action in this one was just about perfect with kids heading off to chase the [...]

In a Fog on State Street

This image marks the start of 'fog week' with black and white images taken on an incredible foggy night in early December.  I shared a few color images from this night last week but have to admit the black and white ones ended up being my favorites.  I had six in particular that stood out and am sharing five of those this week.  The benefit of black and white, especially when it comes to images of light and fog is that it removes the distraction of color and forces the viewer to focus on textures, lines and gradients.  I hope [...]

The Surfer on Devereux Beach

On November 3rd, the same night during which I captured the causeway and harbor under great light and a clammer in the ocean, I also found this guy surfing in the waters off Devereux Beach.  As he came out of the water around sunset, I found the human element added greatly to the view of Marblehead Neck beyond.  I captured this frame with the surfboard parallel to the ground and reflecting some light which helped focus the viewers eye on the relatively small surfer and thereby add a sense of scale to the scene beyond. With the waves, great low-lying [...]

Clamming on Devereux Beach at Sunset

On November 3rd, I had decided to try to capture one of the incredible strings of sunsets that had been forming (and that I had been missing for various reasons).  I followed the clouds to Devereux Beach and managed to capture a nice scene of Marblehead Neck with fall colors on the trees.  If you missed it, click here [LINK]. After capturing that image, I turned and noted someone in the waters off Devereux Beach.  It took me a minute to see that he was busy clamming in the Atlantic Ocean and only a few more minutes to realize how [...]
