Indian Summer in Little Harbor

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out on Sunday afternoon to scout foliage in town and to capture the feel of an Indian Summer that had come to Marblehead on this last weekend in September. I drove out along Beacon Street and glanced in my rearview mirror where I spotted the boats tied up in front of Brown's Island on this picture perfect day.  After checking a few other spots including the view from Fountain Park, I made my way back to Beacon Street and this small outflow which offers a great view of Brown's Island and this [...]

Indian Summer in Marblehead

This past Summer in Marblehead has to rank among the most perfect (weather wise) in a very long time.  We had a mild June and July followed by a blast of heat and humidity at the end of August/early September and then the cool (but not too cold) days of late Summer/early Fall came.  This weekend, though, brought back the warmth and humidity to stave off that Autumn and soon-to-be Winter chill for at least a few more days.  While not meeting the technical definition of an Indian Summer in Marblehead (the Farmer's almanac states the warmth has to occur [...]

Harvest Moon and Marblehead Harbor

One more image from September 2013 to finish off this short week.  With the Jewish New Year upon us, I will be taking a break from the site for the next few days. I have shared a wider image (and the full story) of how I came to be on a rooftop while the Harvest moon rose over a full Marblehead Harbor.  You can read that story by clicking the image below.  As the moon rose, I tried a number of compositions and liked this zoomed in view a lot but held off sharing it at the time as it [...]

Marblehead Harbor Bathed in Fog

Continuing with the look back at September, this image was taken on September 11, 2013.  Marblehead was treated to dense fog on this particular morning and, rather than quickly dissipate after sunrise, the fog on this day stayed and stayed.  I ended up shooting scenes of Marblehead Harbor bathed in fog from four different locations. As the sun rose, it added a beautiful orange light to the thick fog and, in this scene, you can make out a few boats in the harbor (and not much else) under the bright early morning sun.

Gravestones under a Maple Tree

Fall has arrived but the trees are only slowly making their way from green to brilliant orange and red this year.  I decided to look back at the archive and found this image captured on September 25, 2013 with gravestones at the Green Street Cemetery seen under the light of a Maple tree at peak Fall colors. I had capture this tree previously in a favorite image.  You can see all of my foliage images of Marblehead to get ready for this coming season by clicking here - Click for Foliage

Low Tide in Marblehead – Smooth Sand at Devereux Beach

The series of six images captured during an incredibly low tide in Marblehead comes to a close with this final shot.  I was in awe of the smooth sand at Devereux Beach that resulted from the astronomically low tide (-1.5 feet). After capturing the pink sky in the other direction, I turned toward the setting sun and the beautiful light that still glowed strong in the early evening.  With the rocks in the foreground, the smooth ocean water and scattered clouds reflecting the sun's last light, I couldn't ask for much more for this week's finale. I have a few [...]

Low Tide in Marblehead – Pink Sky over Devereux Beach

The sky was erupting in pink at this point so, as soon as I finished capturing yesterday's image (had to wait for a break in traffic), I turned my attention back to Devereux Beach.  The smooth sand and water were doing wonders at reflecting the pink sky over Devereux Beach and I found this composition perfectly captured the feel of awe and wonder I felt standing on the causeway. I bet most 'Headers would be hard pressed to identify this sandy beach as Devereux (though the houses along the Neck in the distance give it away). It's so refreshing to [...]

Low Tide in Marblehead – Clouds over the Causeway

With images of Devereux Beach at low tide captured, I walked back up to (and on top of) the causeway.  I started taking photos of those same golden clouds from yesterday's image and was reasonably happy with the results. Then, as the sun dipped below the horizon, the colors in the sky began to change to pink and a perfect cloud formed directly over Marblehead Neck with the causeway forming a beautiful leading line directly into it.  I widened my composition to include the whole of the Neck with Marblehead Light viewable in the far left and sought to capture [...]

Lines in the Sand at Devereux Beach

As I mentioned yesterday, after exploring the area around Riverhead Beach during an astronomically low tide, I walked back across the causeway and down to Devereux Beach.  With such a low tide, Devereux Beach seemed to transform from its usual rocky shore to smooth sand as far as the eye could see. As the sun dipped lower in the sky and began giving off the golden glow of sunset, clouds over the water reflected that color.  Between the clouds in the sky and the lines in the sand at Devereux Beach, I couldn't pass up this image facing the ocean [...]

Low Tide in Marblehead – Riverhead Beach

Continuing from Friday's introduction to this week's theme, here is the wider view of Riverhead beach.  You can see the float that I had stood on for the earlier image in the center of the frame and hopefully appreciate just how low the tide had been to allow me to walk along Riverhead beach to the water's edge. From here, I had quickly returned to the causeway where I captured this image and then turned my attention to Devereux Beach...  Come back tomorrow for that image.
