Marblehead Harbor Bathed in Fog

Continuing with the look back at September, this image was taken on September 11, 2013.  Marblehead was treated to dense fog on this particular morning and, rather than quickly dissipate after sunrise, the fog on this day stayed and stayed.  I ended up shooting scenes of Marblehead Harbor bathed in fog from four different locations. As the sun rose, it added a beautiful orange light to the thick fog and, in this scene, you can make out a few boats in the harbor (and not much else) under the bright early morning sun.

Fog and Shadows at Old Burial Hill

Back to the days of fog in mid-July for this image of Old Burial Hill.  I had started photographing scenes of dense fog resulting from a Smoky Sou'Wester on Beacon Street at Grace Oliver beach and then walked from there until I ended up at Old Burial Hill and, later, Redd's Pond. As I made my way around gravestones in the old cemetery, I noticed the way the light broke through the trees with the fog accentuating the contrast of light and shadows.  I stopped at this point and switched to a vertical orientation to capture the fog and shadows at [...]

Devereux Beach in the Fog

This seemed an appropriate image for the upcoming Labor Day weekend.  Some time after capturing yesterday's image of fog, light and shadows at Old Burial Hill, I had wondered down to Devereux Beach to see if the fog offered interesting vantage points near the ocean.  I found that the ocean seemed to disappear only a few feet from shore into that grey expanse and decided to set up a straight shot to accentuate the effect of the familiar beach in the fog. I waited for a wave to come ashore and captured this simple image.  There was an odd glow [...]

A Tree Lined Path in the Fog

On July 21, dense fog descended on Marblehead in what one local described as a Smokey Sou'Wester.  The fog was thick near the water but would clear quickly inland.  I had left my car on Beacon Street near Grace Oliver beach and walked with the camera and tripod around the bend toward Fountain Park. I passed this small road lined by trees and recalled shooting this scene in similar conditions years ago.  It was a foggy day but much later in the year with many of the trees bare and had chosen a horizontal orientation. On this day, I decided [...]

Foggy Sunset at Marblehead Harbor

It feels great to be back!  Our planned vacation on the Cape could not have come at a better time with the stress of the book having peaked in the week before while trying to deliver nearly 500 books to places near and far.  As I ventured out to capture scenes throughout Cape Cod, I kept realizing how much I missed shooting landscapes in Marblehead and just how beautiful those scenes back home were. With that in mind, I decided to share this foggy sunset at Marblehead harbor captured in mid-July.  We had been experiencing a fair amount of fog [...]

Devereux Beach Playground in the Fog

July 21st brought with it incredibly dense fog that one local described to me as a 'smokey sou'wester'.  I began photographing the fog at Grace Oliver beach and then made my way around Beacon Street.  When all of those compositions were exhausted, I made my way to Devereux Beach hoping for some foggy scenes along the ocean. By the time I arrived, the sun had started to move closer to the horizon and, with the dense fog, it appeared huge in the diffused light.  As I walked down the beach, I spotted this backlit scene of the Devereux Beach playground [...]

Black Dog in Little Harbor

On Monday, July 21, dense fog approached Marblehead's shores and I decided to head out to capture a few scenes I had in mind.  Rather than heading straight to Marblehead Harbor, I took West Shore Drive to Beacon Street and Grace Oliver Beach.  I took a few photos there with Brown's Island barely visible through the gathering fog and then walked along Beacon Street to Harding Lane.  There, I wandered down for a better view of Brown's Island and found Sadie. Sadie was jumping into the waters of Little Harbor after rocks being thrown by her owners.  She would pine [...]

Pink Sunset and Fog over Marblehead Harbor

Back to the incredible sunset that took place on Wednesday, July 16.  I've share two images from that night so far but, between the fog over Marblehead Harbor and the spectacular colors that formed at sunset and for the 45 minutes that followed, I have 10 more images yet to share from this evening. I previously shared an image including Abbot Hall and one focused on the cranes at the end of the pier from which I was shooting.  This was the view looking out toward Marblehead Light.  At this point, the colors in the sky had shifted from blue [...]

The Cranes at Sunset overlooking Marblehead Harbor

You know you are dealing with an incredible sunset when a pair of cranes grab your attention and become the focal point of an image.  I had never imagined taking a picture of the two cranes that stand at the end of this pier off Foster Street but then I never saw light as incredible as on this Wednesday evening. With the low-lying fog bank on Marblehead Harbor and the explosion of colors overhead, I kept moving from one spot to the next trying to capture the incredible light before me.  As I moved to cross from one side to [...]

Red Sky at Night and Fog in Marblehead Harbor

On Wednesday, July 15, Marblehead was pummeled by rain that seemed to fall in sheets at times.  The humidity of the system combined with the cold water temperatures to form fog in the morning and night for several days.  As the system moved away in early evening, I decided to head out hoping for that fog and the strong sunsets that usually follow a good storm. As I made my way across the causeway, I found thick fog had indeed arrived and made it difficult to see to the next lamp post as I drove.  I continued to Foster Street [...]
