The Causeway in the Blue Hour

As I mentioned in yesterday's image of Green Moss in the Blue Hour, I had decided to shoot both sides of the causeway during a photo walk last week. This was the second image taken. In it, I set up the tripod along the water at Riverhead beach to capture the S curve formed where the water met the shore. I waited for a passing car and then took a 20 second exposure in order to still the water and get the red tail lights to help illuminate the curves of the causeway. Green Moss in the Blue Hour

I mentioned the blue hour in a recent image and explained that the quality of light during this time can be really magical. The easier of the blue hours to photograph is the evening one owing to the much more reasonable timing of it. I went out last week to shoot at sunset and continued to shoot well into the blue hour. I noticed the low tide as I crossed the causeway and ended up taking two photos from the Marblehead Neck side. It's Tuesday and time for another Long Exposure image. In mid-February, I drove out at sunset with the the aim of shooting some long exposure images. The sky held promise with scattered clouds and the sunset did not disappoint. This was the outing in which I captured one of my favorite images - Doaks Lane Sunset. Immediately before that image, I had captured this one. The tide was just perfect for me to walk down to the beach and navigate to these rocks. Eternal Flame at Waterside Cemetery

This is a photo I took last year while exploring Waterside Cemetery on Memorial Day. I posted two other images from that day last year but revisited the archive and found this image of the eternal flame. I hadn't shot flames in daylight before and found that it took a lot of trial and error to get the flame 'just right'. If you look at this image in large size, you'll notice one hint of flame that escaped from the larger fire emanating from the torch in the remembrance pool.

The Lone Tree at Fort Sewall

As I mentioned in Monday's post, this week was going to feature a fair amount of fog. This image came from the start of the night - I had just set up my tripod for the supermoon shot when the fog rolled in fast and thick. I quickly changed lenses and took advantage of the setting light to shoot this magnificent tree looking lonely without a harbor to accompany it. The beauty of fog is that it isolates a subject. while normally this composition would include distant houses, rocks and a harbor filled with boats, here the tree stands alone. [...]

Riding the Chair Swing at the Devereux Carnival

The carnival has come and gone but not before I managed a few new images of the fun. I had this image in mind as soon as the first postings went up about the carnival coming back to Devereux beach. It's Long Exposure Tuesday and we're going to stick with the fog theme. On Tuesday evening, I received my new camera to replace the 4-year-old dSLR I had been using. The Grassy Hill at Fort Sewall

May 5th proved to be a very productive day. As I wrote on the supermoon image and the recent 'two roads' one, a blanket of fog descended on me as I set up for a shot at Fort Sewall that evening.
