Blue Moon over Marblehead Harbor

I arrived home from work last night and my 6 year old son starts telling me about 'moon jellyfish' that he saw while tide pooling at camp today.  He can't stop describing them and is almost beside himself at how amazing it was to hold one.  The more he talked, the more I thought it worth heading out to see them.  I decided to postpone my dinner and got them in the car to head back to Front Street beach where he had been earlier in the day.  We got to Front Street at low tide and scampered around the [...]

Fishing under the Full Moon

With this month's full moon, also known as the Sturgeon moon, I sought out a new spot from which to capture the rise.  I charted the expected location of its ascent and decided to use Marblehead Rock as my landmark with which to anchor the moon to a familiar spot.  I set up and waited for the moon to rise above a low marine layer of clouds.  Once it did, I started shooting - first wider shots to include the entire island and then closer shots. As the moon climbed in the sky, a boat came by on the way [...]

Chasing the Supermoon

Twenty-four hours later, the chase is over. I started my attempt to capture this year's supermoon (otherwise known as the perigee of the moon) on Saturday night.  The moon was at its nearest point to Earth in its yearly orbit and that should have resulted in a larger and brighter full moon.  Conditions seemed perfect as the clouds finally burned off at 6pm and I drove out to Fort Sewall around 7.  As I neared my destination, I had to rub my eyes in disbelief...a thick band of fog had descended around the harbor.  This was pea soup type fog [...]

The Pink Moon rises over Marblehead Neck

Friday promised a full Pink moon and absolutely perfect conditions for shooting it.  Only problem was that the rise coincided with the first night of Passover.  I somehow convinced my visiting parents to move the Seder up an hour and we were finished eating by 7pm.  I quickly went to the car to 'pick up some coffee' and headed to Devereux beach.  I had wanted to shoot a full moon rising over the houses on the Neck for a while and this was as good a chance as any.  I set up and waited in anticipation... I was not disappointed [...]

The Worm Moon rises over Old Burial Hill

The Worm Moon rose on March 7th and I was determined to find a new vantage point from which to shoot it.  I had planned on capturing its rise over the house at Redds pond but, as the minutes ticked by and the moon failed to appear, I walked around the pond and eventually up to Old Burial Hill.  There I spotted this scene of a full moon rising over gravestones dating back hundreds of years and decided this was the image I should capture.

The Snow Moon sets over Old North Church

As the old saying goes, 'what goes up, must come down'.  After shooting the Snow Moon rising the night before, I checked the weather conditions for the next morning and was pleased to see a forecast for clear skies.  I figured out where the moon would be setting and determined the best spot for capturing it setting near the Old North Church. As I drove out in the early morning, I noticed the light cloud cover and hoped it wouldn't interfere with the final shot.  When I set up near the lighthouse, I realized the clouds would blot out much [...]

Through the tree at Fort Sewall

This image exemplifies something I try to remember during each outing...Always look back on a scene!  I had photographed the Snow Moon rising over Childrens Island and was pleased with the results.  As I made my way back to the car parked on Front Street, I looked back every five minutes to recheck the scene I had left.  When I turned the corner and saw the moon making its way through the great tree at the fort, I knew I needed to get my gear out once more and capture this image. By the time the moon had risen high [...]

The Snow Moon rises over Childrens Island

With each new full moon, I have been trying to find a unique vantage point from which to shoot it.  The last one, the Wolf Moon, proved tricky as it came up quite a bit after sunset making for difficult shooting conditions.  The Snow Moon cooperated in regards to time of rise but some low lying clouds threw a wrench in my plans. Starting at 4 pm, I made my way around town scouting out locations from which to shoot the moon rise.  I contemplated and dismissed four different spots before deciding to head up to Fort Sewall for the [...]

The Wolf Moon Rises over the Pier

So I had to look up the name for January's full moon and was surprised to see it called the Wolf Moon.  On Sunday night, the moon was just about full and I headed to the private beach at the end of Corn Point Road to await its arrival.  Clouds arrived instead and I had to settle for the long exposure image posted yesterday. I returned Monday night after racing straight from work and got to the beach just as the light of sunset faded.  I quickly scampered onto the beach and setup where I expected the moon to rise. [...]

The Harvest Moon rises near Abbot Hall

The Harvest Moon rose last night and I had planned out a perfect vantage point to capture it.  Then I noticed the clouds at the horizon and had to quickly come up with a plan B.  Turns out that plan B was waiting on the corner of Village Street and Highland Terrace.  I carefully maneuvered the camera to the top of the fence while on my tiptoes and used it as a makeshift tripod while grabbing this shot.  The moon ended up rising a bit too early and too fast so it lacked the color typical of the Harvest Moon. [...]
