The Gun House of Marblehead

The Gun House of Marblehead was, as the sign proclaims, built in 1810 and was meant for storing artillery.  I happened to drive by it on Elm Street one day in early November of last year. The sun was still relatively high in the sky at almost 3pm and lit up the tree behind it in a beautiful yellow glow.  I decided to capture the old brick house and later learned the doors were slated for replacement.  I haven't been back yet to see if the new doors changed the building's appearance.

The Harvest Moon Rises over Marblehead Harbor

I had little hope for capturing this year's Harvest moon.  The thick clouds these past few days and today's rain made me think that this year's attempt would be a wash...literally.  A funny thing happened at 5pm as I milled around with the kids and neighbors outside, the sun came out and the clouds disappeared.  I quickly thought of places from which I might 'shoot the moon' and headed out to Crocker Park. I got there right at 6:25pm with a moon rise scheduled for 6:27.  I was thrilled to see that the main tree had started to show off [...]

From the Rooftops – Leggs Hill Road

This image was taken in the first week of November when I noted the nice light of sunset and made my way to the back parking lot of the YMCA and tried to find a vantage point unobstructed by trees.  I had taken a similar shot almost exactly one year earlier facing towards Salem but that view was obstructed due to tree growth.  I chose this view to approximate my rooftop ones and show the houses around Leggs Hill Road.

The Island in the Harbor

On Friday, October 21st, I drove past this island which sits on the border between Salem and Marblehead in the harbor and noted that it had seemed to reach peak color for the Fall.  I had been scouting this island for years hoping but failing to catch it at its peak last year.  Luckily, I had been carrying my camera gear in my trunk on a daily basis that week and, even more so, I was able to finish up work at 4pm and get back in time for sunset.  I tried a number of angles from different vantage points [...]

Old Town House Draped in Falls Best

I had my eye on this tree for weeks and kept waiting for it to finally reveal its full color.  It cooperated very well by doing so on the first Wednesday in November.  I tried to set up for this shot but had a car parked directly in front that obstructed my view.  Just as I was about to give up, the car took off and I managed to snap this image during a short break in traffic.  Enjoy another scene of Fall as the weather holds out against the coming Winter for at least a bit longer. Don't forget [...]

Waterside Painted in Red

Fall is finally showing its true color in Marblehead and I have been fortunate to catch a few areas at their peak.  On Saturday, I was driving down West Shore when I saw this brilliant tree in Waterside Cemetery.  I quickly turned around and grabbed my camera for a few shots.  The trouble was that many of the trees in the background had already lost their leaves so the lone tree looked a bit depressing rather than vibrant.  I chose to process this photo using the Orton effect (which I also used on the Welcome to Marblehead sign a while [...]

Fall colors explode in Marblehead

On Tuesday, November 8th I found myself with a bit of time at 3pm with which to explore downtown.  I drove down Pleasant street with a destination in mind when I saw this tree lit up by a late Fall sun.  I quickly parked and set up to capture this beautiful tree at peak color perfectly framing the beautiful blue door of this house.  If you look carefully, you can just make out the tag explaining that this house was built by Samuel Martin, Housewright in 1828.  I found a wealth of color as I raced against the setting sun [...]

Trees Rise from a Colorful Swamp

It took a while to happen but the leaves have finally started to show their Fall colors.  I rode along the rail trail on October 18th and stopped at a small opening through which I noted this small swamp.  The bare trunks rising from it contrasted nicely against the changing colors in the background.  I waited for a break in the clouds to bring out the colors and captured this image. Technical: Shot at f/2.8 to make the foreground trunk stand out and blur the background.  Used a circular polarizer to bring out the reflection in the water and help [...]

Mother under the Maple Tree

This is the perfect ending to Halloween week on Wednesdays in Marblehead.  I was biking around town in search of foliage when I spotted this maple outside the cemetery on the corner of Elm and Creesy Streets.  I couldn't find the right angle to shoot it from outside the cemetery so I ventured inside.  Once there, I found a few gravestones that would make for a nice foreground but the light wasn't quite right.  Then the clouds shifted and the light illuminated the singular word 'Mother' on the one gravestone standing apart from the rest.  I dropped to the ground [...]

A Snow Family in Snowctober

Well, we had our second snow of the season - though, I don't know if you can call Fall part of the 'snow season'.  Though other parts of the state ended up with at least 6 inches, we received a tolerable few.  I drove around town this morning on the hunt for foliage (which had been pretty sparse) to shoot with a backdrop of snow.  I couldn't find much until the very end but did see this 'snow family' at Seaside park.  I framed them under the weeping willow to highlight the very early snow as the willow hasn't even [...]
