The Harvest Moon Rises over Marblehead Harbor

I had little hope for capturing this year's Harvest moon. The thick clouds these past few days and today's rain made me think that this year's attempt would be a wash...literally. A funny thing happened at 5pm as I milled around with the kids and neighbors outside, the sun came out and the clouds disappeared. The Blue Moon and the Lamp Post

I shared a photo of the blue moon on Friday that was taken on August 30th. Turns out the moon turned full the next morning so I had one more shot at getting a photo of the rising moon the next evening. Blue Moon over Marblehead Harbor

Fishing under the Full Moon

With this month's full moon, also known as the Sturgeon moon, I sought out a new spot from which to capture the rise. I charted the expected location of its ascent and decided to use Marblehead Rock as my landmark with which to anchor the moon to a familiar spot. Harbor Illumination

A gigapixel view of the Marblehead Harbor Illumination iPhone/iPad users - click the grey title bar for an iPhone friendly version (pinch to zoom that one). Before the fireworks began, I had another image in mind and carefully setup to try to achieve what you see above. I photographed the Marblehead harbor illumination at a focal length of 105mm (approximately 4x zoom equivalent) using 28 vertical images. The combined image is a staggering 325 megapixels. Epic Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

I made my way to Crocker Park last night in hopes of shooting the almost full moon. I was hoping for an image of it rising over the Festival of Arts stage but it rose too early. I then watched as this beautiful bank of clouds approached and crossed over the harbor. Fifteen minutes earlier, I was treated to a rare rainbow over the lighthouse in the distance. The Pink Moon rises over Marblehead Neck

Friday promised a full Pink moon and absolutely perfect conditions for shooting it. Only problem was that the rise coincided with the first night of Passover. The Worm Moon rises over Old Burial Hill

The Worm Moon rose on March 7th and I was determined to find a new vantage point from which to shoot it. I had planned on capturing its rise over the house at Redds pond but, as the minutes ticked by and the moon failed to appear, I walked around the pond and eventually up to Old Burial Hill. There I spotted this scene of a full moon rising over gravestones dating back hundreds of years and decided this was the image I should capture.

The Snow Moon sets over Old North Church

As the old saying goes, 'what goes up, must come down'. After shooting the Snow Moon rising the night before, I checked the weather conditions for the next morning and was pleased to see a forecast for clear skies. Through the tree at Fort Sewall

This image exemplifies something I try to remember during each outing...Always look back on a scene! I had photographed the Snow Moon rising over Childrens Island and was pleased with the results.
