Experimental Friday – The Swing

A very simple composition for today's Experimental Friday entry.  I was shooting at sunset in early June when I walked back to my car, stopped and looked back over my shoulder.  The 'good' light had faded but I couldn't help return and shoot this swing as it 'rested' in the air.  I angled the camera very low to get only sky in the background.

From the Rooftops – Looking Down Washington Street

On Saturday, after watching the Christmas Walk parade, my seven year old son begged me to take him to the GAR/Civil War museum on the second floor of the Old Town House.  We had been there before but I had heard this was the last weekend it would be open and so I agreed.  We walked up the steps and under a ladder before making our way through the exhibits.  As we got ready to leave, I couldn't help but ask why the ladder was up and the attic door open.  It was explained that they were beginning preparations for [...]

Dawn Lights Up Fort Sewall

Two weeks ago, I ventured out at dawn in hopes of a nice sunrise from Front Street and Fort Sewall.  I made my way down there at 5:30 in the morning and ventured out of the car (and into the cold) once the first light appeared at the horizon.  I started off with this image of the houses that abut the Fort and the great tree that marks this part of town.  There were just enough clouds at the horizon to capture the colors of dawn which also reflected off the windows of the house.  The long exposure required due [...]

Long Exposure – Jeremiah Lee Mansion

A long exposure image on this Tuesday morning finds the Jeremiah Lee Mansion from an incredibly windy day in late March.  This is a 25 second exposure and the long exposure with the incredible wind made for some great effects in the clouds racing overhead.  There were few other people or cars on the street making this a somewhat eerie scene.

Glover’s Regiment at the Christmas Walk Parade

This weekend marked the Annual Christmas Walk and, as the festivities began, a light snow fall commenced to add to the festive mood.  After Santa landed by way of a lobster boat and took photos with the assembled kids, a parade took place led to Glover's Regiment.  I happened to have ended up in front of Old Town House with my kids and, as the regiment marched up State Street, I quickly grabbed the camera and found an angle to capture this moment.  When the lead drummers turned, I grabbed this image.  The Regiment largely hid the assembled crowd and [...]

The Little Boys and Girls’ Rooms

Experimental Friday heads out to Childrens Island and this image from October of last year.  I think the colors first drew me to this scene and the rotting wood at the base of the doors as well as the hand painted BOYS and GIRLS signs led me to take the picture.  But what really kept me looking was the small handprint seen on the window on the girls' side.  It just leaves you wondering...

A Late November Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

I went out last night in hopes that the clouds would break and allow me to shoot November's full moon.  As I drove out to my intended destination, I looked in the rearview mirror and saw the sun slowly set and the clouds break into great patterns.  I decided to head straight to Fort Sewall first and hoped the light would hold til I got there. I ran up the hill and explored both ends of the Fort but noted that the harbor side offered the best light.  As the sun set, the light was picked up by the water. [...]

Snow Blankets Redd’s Pond and Pond View

That was a pretty incredible first snow of the season!  Not really...barely any ended up sticking.  As I watched the slush fall, I combed through the archives and found this image from January 2009.  The original processing left much to be desired so I got to work trying to breathe new life into the photo.  I'm much happier with it now and hope it conveys that feeling of being out at Redd's as the snow drifts down on a perfect Winter day.

Long Exposure – The Rocks at Preston Beach

Another Tuesday and another long exposure image.  This one was taken back in late May as the sun was setting.  I had been playing with various compositions and then tried this one at the end.  I allowed the exposure to go a bit longer than usual and ended up with almost no line between the water and sky at the horizon.  You can just barely make out the hint of it at the corners which makes for a pretty interesting image.  The strong textures on the rocks contrast nicely against the smoothness of the water in this 147 second exposure.

Pink Clouds at Dawn Over Marblehead Harbor

Something told me that Tuesday morning's sunrise might be worth an early wake up so I dutifully set the alarm a bit early and made my way out to Front street at 5:30 in the morning.  At first, the skies disappointed with some decent morning light but no clouds to reflect the pinks that typically accompany a late Fall sunrise.  Just as the sun threatened to break above the clouds, these wisps showed up and quickly fell into place. I was shooting in landscape (horizontal) format and quickly switched to this portrait (vertical) orientation to get the tops of the [...]
