Rusted Screw and Weathered Pylon

It's another Experimental Friday entry which takes us back to the pylons that were featured on Tuesday's Long Exposure post.  After getting the composition I had sought for some time, I took the camera off the tripod and decided to play with angles and depth of field.  I noticed this rusted screw in the nearest pylon and decided to make that a focal point with the swirling waves serving as a backdrop.  I opened up the lens to its widest aperture and focused on the screw.  In doing so, the texture of the rust and the patterns on the pylon [...]

Thankful for Two Great Years of Sharing Images of Marblehead

It's Thanksgiving and I wanted to take this opportunity to give thanks to this incredible community for welcoming me and showing such support of my attempts to photograph this beautiful town I feel fortunate to call home. Thank you to all those who commented on my images both here and on my Facebook page. Thank you to everyone who emailed me with words of support and encouragement when an image had a particular effect on them. Thank you to all those who welcomed me into their physical homes (and roofs) during the Rooftop Thursday series.  And to all those who [...]

November Sunset over Devereux Beach

Here is another image taken this past Sunday when all the elements seemed to line up to offer a great Fall sunset.  As the clouds developed overhead, I made my way down to Devereux beach and set about exploring the light and movement of the ocean.  I noted that, since Superstorm Sandy came and went, the sand seemed much finer and lacking the rocks that had always characterized this stretch of beach.  When I chose this spot for the image, I felt a bit like I was on another smooth beach in the Carolinas rather than Devereux in Marblehead.  Then [...]

Pylons in the Misty Water

A new location on this Long Exposure Tuesday - the beach at the end of Corn Point Road.  I had found this group of old pylons last Winter but, at the time, the tide was too low for the image that I hoped to capture.  When I revisited the location at high tide a few months later, I was disappointed to see that, yet again, the water failed to reach the level of the close pylons.  So it was with fingers crossed that I drove out again during an astronomical high tide to see if luck might favor the persistent... Tonight’s Sunset over the Causeway

For the first night in what seems like forever, the conditions seemed right for a solid sunset.  There were nice clouds in the sky, it wasn't bitterly cold out and I was free to shoot (not stuck at work watching as the sky exploded in different colors).  I made my way down Ocean Avenue and stopped at Devereux beach.  The light looked good but I decided to quickly scout out the view from the Neck.  Turned out Devereux had the best vantage point and I got to shooting. I started off at 3:50pm near the water's edge.  I shot the [...]

Fall Wreath on a Blue Door

This image came from the Photo Walk that took place in October and during which I did a bit of experimentation.  I don't recall exactly where I was when I walked by this blue door but the simple composition of the wreath and the great complement of colors - oranges, blue and brown - made me stop and stare.  This was a quick shot and the wide open aperture helped nail the focus on the wreath's details and keep the texture of the door from distracting.

Fall Colors at the Bud Orne Playground

Here's a more recent image taken as the colors peaked around town.  I had noticed this great tree and its bright orange leaves one day as my son played flag football.  I wasn't able to photograph it at the time as the playground was wildly busy and decided to come by the next morning.  I found the place empty as if waiting in anticipation when I arrived.  While the trees had started to lose color at the top, they still had some nice leaves to serve as a backdrop to this great playground.

Melting Ice at Redds Pond

Don't get nervous/excited...it's another image from the archives and not the status of Redds at the moment.  This was actually taken in March 2009 after a snow storm and as the ice began to melt back.  As I mentioned on Monday's post, I have been trying to bring out images that have been sitting in my archive for a while and waiting for a break in new material to post them.  Hope you enjoy this view of Redds on this Wednesday in Marblehead...

Under the Pier at the Eastern Yacht Club

It's Tuesday so back to Long Exposures from around town.  This one was taken in January 2012 as I explored the shores along the neck and scampered over rocks and under piers.  The structure above this one struck me and I decided to center it in the frame to emphasize the symmetry.  A long exposure helped calm the already fairly still waters below.  Hope you enjoy this one.

Swirling Water at Castle Rock

I haven't shot a landscape image in a few weeks but that has 'forced' me to return to my archive of images and rescue some of these from the seemingly never ending waiting line before they see the light of day.  In this case, the image from Castle Rock at sunset dates back to June 11, 2008!  I had this image waiting to post but decided to rework it last night in preparation with some new techniques I had picked up over the past 4 years.  I was able to bring a bit more color into the sky and rock [...]
