Fog on the Causeway

Since discovering the beauty of these lamp posts on the causeway during a foggy night in November 2011, I have returned on a few occasions looking for new compositions to showcase the balance of light and shadows on this link between Marblehead Neck and the mainland. This is one of three compositions captured in early December 2013 on a foggy evening.  The fog on the causeway helped illuminate the full arc of light given off by each lamp post.  Below is a gallery of other images in the series: Would you like to order a print of this image? Full Moon over Fort Beach

It's hard to believe that I haven't shot the full moon rising in Marblehead since this image captured in mid-July.  Weather is mostly to blame with many of the full moons having been hidden behind thick cloud cover over the past few months.  However, with most full moon risings, I have tried to capture the scene from more than one perspective. On this night, I had managed to get the moon placed perfectly over Marblehead Light and then walked down to Fort Beach while there was still enough light in the sky to capture this wider view including the boats [...]

Golden Light over Marblehead Harbor

This image comes from the end of July and some incredible clouds that formed over Marblehead Harbor.  As the sun began to set, the golden hour set in and this singular cloud was bathed in golden light. Don't forget the Annual Christmas Walk takes place this weekend! I will be signing my Wednesdays in Marblehead book at the following locations: Saturday, December 6 from 12:30pm - 1:30pm - Marblehead Museum Saturday, December 6 from 2:00pm - 4:00pm - Spirit of '76 Bookstore Sunday, December 7 from 12:30pm - 2:00pm - Arnould Gallery

Striking Sunset from Bass Rock Lane

This image from the rocks at the end of Bass Rock Lane was captured in mid-October.  I had gone out with some ideas in mind for this shoot and had also brought along my new iPhone 6 to try out its time-lapse mode.  I set up the phone and proceeded to scamper around the rocks looking for strong compositions including this one with the setting sun and houses along the Atlantic Ocean. I shared the time-lapse that evening but hadn't had a chance to share this image until today.

The Float at Crocker Park

The morning of Sunday, August 24 ended up being a very productive one.  My wife and kids were out of town and I decided to wake up before 5:00am to capture the dawn from Crocker Park. Between 5:18 and 5:58, I captured a number of images from Crocker Park including views looking out over a full Marblehead Harbor with the sun rising near Marblehead Light.  This is the last image I have to share from the set. I had never taken an image from this position before and sought to include the nearby tree as well as the float at [...]

Setting Sun over Devereux Beach

On Wednesday, November 12, Spring-like weather replaced the freezing cold with temperatures hitting the high-50s.  I decided to head down to Devereux Beach at sunset and see if the conditions might make for a nice sunset. Before the sun set (an image I posted shortly after I captured it), I was treated to this view of a large sun whose light was diffused by haze.  I set the exposure and aperture such that the sun would become a large and bright ball in the evening sky and timed this image to capture the soft waves coming to shore.

First Lite in Marblehead Harbor

On Thanksgiving morning, the conditions seemed right for a dawn/sunrise shoot and so I woke up early and headed down to the State Street landing area.  I ended up walking to the end of Ferry Lane and set up to capture the sunrise in front of the Harbormaster office. I began shooting four lobster boats lined up in front of Marblehead Neck and the lighthouse with great clouds reflecting the morning light.  As the light built, I turned toward the causeway and composed this image with a single boat.  The light was beautiful at this point in the morning and [...]

Thankful to Live in such a Beautiful Town

With Thanksgiving upon us, it is time to give thanks.  Wednesdays in Marblehead began in August 2010 as a personal project through which I hoped to learn more about this town that we had recently moved to.  From the start and to this day, I have taken images for myself.  Every single photo captures a moment in which I went out in search of something new to explore in this relatively small town.  I am so thankful that we moved here in 2008 and that this project has been so welcomed by Marbleheaders new and old. A quick check on Google [...]
